My 3 month old son is tounge tied. I have seen a lactation consultant and they advised that we really need to have the fernulum cut. My son is gaining weight like he should. However, I am extremly sore all the time and you can hear the clicking and sucking of air while he feeds. His tounge will not come out past the gums either. We will be having the fernulum cut the middle of this next week. I am really unsure what to expect following the procedure. Does anyone have any advise for me on this? Will he be uncomfortable? Any advise would be great.
Well thank you to everyone that replied to my post. The advise and support was very much appriciated. We did have his tongue clipped on Wednesday. It was very simple and he only cried for a minute. There was hardly any bleeding. He nursed right after we got home with out any problems and I noticed a difference right away. He didn't even show any signs of discomfort. I am very happy that we had the procedure done for his benefit and mine.
Be thankful that you caught it now!!! Short lingual frenums, "tongue tied", can lead to feeding and speech delays. It is a very simple procedure. Probably some discomfort for a few days. I only know 3-5 year olds that have had a frenectomy, not infants. Don't worry, it will heal very quickly.

I am first time mom and when my son was born he was having a hard time eating; however I did not realize he was not latching on to me because I had never breatfed before. So, by the second or third day the nurse came in and said that he had lost a pound and needed to eat right away and they thought there might be a chance that he was tongue-tied and I had not clue what that was. So, in deperate need of wanting my son to eat and be healthy we gave him a bottle with Enfamil (formula). He drank it like a champ. When the pediatrician came in the next day we asked about it. She said, I thought he was; however you (meaning me) had stated that you thought he was latching on to you to eat and I didn't want to alarm you and thought everything was alright. So, she said since it is not we will do a procedure. So, right then, about 30 minutes later she took him into another room and my husband followed and clipped it. Then, they came back and the nurse was holding gauze on it; and remained doing so for 15 minutes and then he was perfectly healthy (he didn't even have to be put under). However, would not go back to breastfeeding, because of the speed and satisfaction of the bottle. And, ultimately I had to pump for four months. But, thank god they caught early. However, I later found out that I have a 45-year-old cousin whom was also tongue tied and still is and she never had any problems - I had no idea she was nor did anyone else except her parents. She was successful in school and work, married for 25-years, 3 kids and 1 grandkid. So, everything should be fine, since your son is a little older than mine he might have a little bit longer recovery time then him; however just be thankful your son and my son will never remember this and will thank us later when we tell them what happened. I work in an ENT office, so when my son was born I knew to look out for it. My husband was born tongue tied. My dr cut it in the o ffice and my son is now perfect. They dont remember it and it doesnt hurt. If you wait longer...they will have to put the baby under anesticia. It was easy and now I love seeing him stick that tongue out everyday!
I just saw something about that on the news. The child was fine and eating better immediatly. My 19 y/o nephew never had it done because the Dr. said there was no need. He hates that it wasn't done, but they say it can't be done now. He can't reach his back teeth w/his tongue and it even effects his 'personal' life.
Hey, perfect timing. I just got done reading a line of posts on one of the yahoo groups I'm a part of....this one happens to be a parenting group.
