This has been going on for months and the dentist just shrugs it off. He brushes his teeth twice a day, but still persist.

What can I do next?

Is he brushing his tongue? They say a lot of bad breath comes from there. They have to brush way in the back of the tongue, not just the front. Is he on medication? Many medications dry out the mouth and can cause bad breath from that.

If a health care provider shrugs off your concern, it's time for a new provider, or at the very least, a second opinion.

It could be a lot of things.
Since the dentist saw him (and xrayed him) I'd assume he's eliminated the possibility of a rotting tooth.
If he still has his tonsils - he might have tonsil stones - and they stink.
He might also have a sinus infection or stomach/digestive issues.
People with diabetes sometimes have fruity breath.
Start with a doctor and have it checked out.

I'd see an ENT. My cousin's kid shoved a piece of foam up his nose where it stayed for a week or two until he got sick and his breath stunk. The ENT found the foam up there, pulled it out and all was fine.

You don't say old your child is. But if he's older, he could have tonsil stones. Again something that an ENT can handle.

talk to the pedi as medical conditions can cause strange smelling breath. since theres nothing in the mouth that the dentist thinks is causing it (hence shrugging it off) then the dr needs to evaluate and assist

Welcome to mamapedia, Sandy!

What age is your son???? That would help. Is he still being breast fed? What is his diet like?

Many things can cause bad breathe - aka halitosis. Has your dentist thoroughly evaluated your son? Has he checked for a mouth infection? Gum disease? Dry mouth?

1. Not brushing your tongue.
2. Food we eat.
3. Not drinking enough water.
4. Health issues. If his breath smells like medicine - have you taken him to his pediatrician and have him tested for diabetes or other medical issues? Low Iron?

He needs to be tested for diabetes. It's NOT always a "sweet" breath that children get.

When was the last time he had dental X-rays? My son had horrible breath and no amount of brushing helped, it turned out he had an infection at the root of two of his teeth. Once we had those teeth removed and the infection cleaned out the bad breath went away.

My granddaughter had horrible breath - even after having her teeth cleaned. Listerine twice a day works wonders! He has to keep it in his mouth for at least 30 seconds, which can feel like a long time because it's pretty powerful stuff, but he'll get used to it and then it won't be bad at all. Totally worth taking the time to get used to it!

I remember a friend once telling me when he was a kid he had horrible breath and was teased about it. It didn't matter how much he brushed. It turned out it was something to do with his stomach. I cannot remember now but once he fixed that it got better.
