My Five Month Old Only Turns to One Side!

My five month old son only turns to his left side. He doesn't seem to have any intentions of rolling over at all! Or even attempt his right side. Being a first time mom, am I being paranoid, or should I not even bother to worry about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I was changing the baby's diaper this morning, and just as I layed his fresh diaper down, he rolled completely over to his tummy via RIGHT side and peed on my bed! He completely made my week!!! Thank you so much for all the advice!!!

Optimal Spine Chiropractic is right in Aberdeen. They do pediatric chiro, there are always kids in there when I go, Dr. Jen is wonderful with them and moms too. They also do a lot of pregnancy chiro.

Do you notice that he has difficulty turning his head toward the right, or does he keep his head tilted a little to one side? If you feel like he is not equally looking both directions when playing on his back, then maybe he has a stiff neck or 'torticollis". This could be an explanation of why he can only turn on way. If so, bring it up to your pediatrician for possible refer to a pediatric physical therapist.

It may be that he is just taking his time. There is such a wide variety of time when babies are "supposed to" meet their little milestones. However if you notice that he has trouble turning his head to one side or the other, or it looks a little tilted than you may want to get him checked out. (The baby needs to be able to turn his head to initiate rolling over.) If that is the case, I would recommend a pediatric chiropractor. They are specially trained to take care of little ones. Look up icpa4kids.org to find one near you.

The book "what to expect the first year" is really great. You can find it pretty much anywhere. I really recommend that.

Don't worry, this is common. He's still young... he will probably just one day out of the blue, turn to the other side. THEN.. other motor skill movements will develop. They don't all happen at the same time necessarily.
Give him tummy time too. Important for any baby.

All the best,
Susan

Position his high chair, bouncy seat, exersaucer or car seat in such a way that he must turn his head to the right to visually track and find you. That usually works and alleviates your fears. Good luck!

It's totally normal for him to do. Hang in there. He will catch on. Watch out though! Make sure you don't lay him on the couch or bed or anything like that because that's when he will learn to roll that other way! :)

They are so cute! One of our boys found his feet at four days and managed to cross them and turn over! We couldn't believe it. Then when he put a little more weight on he couldn't / didn't do that for awhile.

My DD was born in September of 2008. She didn't roll over from back to front until July 4, 2009. Her pediatrician said it's totally normal. Kids each develop at their own rate. My DD could see everything she wanted to see while she was laying on her back, plus she could push herself around with her feet, so I guess she figured why roll over? :)

My son had torticollis, which was fixed beautifully by my chiropractor when her was about 8 months old. I would as the pediatrician about it. It is completely fixable if he does have it, so don't worry!

My oldest son also use to strongly favor one side over the other (can't remember which side) when he was an infant. I mentioned it to the pedi at one of his well child visits and he said it was no big deal. He told me to purposely put objects of interest on the side that my son didn't like when I was holding him to encourage him to turn his head that way. I did that as much as I could, and he did eventually turn his head to both sides equally. It wouldn't hurt to mention it to his doc, though, just to be on the safe side.

Have you brought him to a chiropractor? If he is out of whack it may hurt him to turn more or to the other side and that could be preventing him from learning to roll all the way over!

We've had both our kids adjusted from birth!
