My daughter is almost 4 years old. She has been potty trained since she was 3 years old & has done very well. She had not had any accidents in a very long time or wet the bed, but the last few weeks she keeps peeing her pants & wetting the bed. I don't know why she is doing this??? Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions???

What can I do next?

Any big changes? My son did this for a bit too...it started right when my husband started a job in another state and was gone two weeks at a time. In addtion, he could just sense me preparing to move etc. Once we moved a month later and were all together again, he went back to normal within about a week. When I was looking into this for my son, it seems the top reasons for these stress related accidents include a new sibling, divorce, move, starting new school, any significant change, really. Also, I took him to his Dr to rule out UTI and Diabetes. Good luck.

My daughter does the same she 8yrs, I found that making her go the potty before bed helps and also talking her about anything. Something might be brothering and she does not know how to express herself. Another is the UTI, my daughter got a couple of these and I had to explain to her how to wipe her self correctly...Hope this helps good luck!

J.,

From three of your posts today, your daughter is kicking and screaming not to go to visitation with her father, is peeing her pants and the bed, and is making herself throw up!! She is crying out for you to help her! She needs to see a pediatrician and then a child psychologist. She is under extreme stress for these behaviors to be happening all at the same time. Has is occurred to you that her father may not just be neglecting her, sending her home filthy and such, but abusing her?!! Please get her help asap.

You should definitely take her to the pediatrician. Last fall our daughter (7 yrs old then) wet the bed after having never done so in her life. She also was drinking a lot and peeing a lot. We honestly didn't think much of it other than "she must be going through a growth spurt." Thanks very much to a good friend who noticed how much water she was drinking and asked us about it, we took her to the doctor the next day and found out she has Type 1 Diabetes. We're so very thankful to our friend and now encourage anyone who has even the slightest symptoms to get checked. It's a simple finger stick to check their blood sugar and well worth it. 9 times out of 10, it's nothing (nothing related to Diabetes, at least - a UTI is "something" for sure) but you have to check to make sure she's not that 1! I certainly don't want to scare you (that is NOT my intention)... just want to make sure that when you take her in to ask the doctor to check her blood sugar. Can't hurt and can only help (if nothing else than to give you peace of mind :-)).

She might have a UTI or Bladder Infection.

Is she also drinking a lot more lately? Have a Dr check her blood sugar too. One of the first signs of type 1 diabetes is excessive thirst, which then makes you have to pee a lot more often. At her age, she might not be able to hold it or wake up when she needs to go. It can be very common for a new diabetic, even an adult, to have more accidents.

hello
I used to wet the bed up until I was around 4ish... in my life, there was much stress, parents fighting, drinking , etc.. I was always stressed out (even if I didn't know it at that young age) additionally, I had night terrors and walked in my sleep... while your household may not be a chaotic mess like mine was, is there a chance your daughter is experiencing some type of stress? Also, consider that which might not seem like a stressful situation to you or other kids her age, she , however may be stressed.. Example, dogs stressed my son out VERY much.. I can't tell you how many times a dog owner will say, oh my dog is friendly , it doesn't bite.. my son doesn't care, he gets stressed...... yet for others, animals help them relax.. also, when my son was little (he too wet the bed until about age 6) he slept so hard that he simply didn't awaken even if he had to go. And, consider that everyone's bladder is a different size.. in fact, some kid's bladders are smaller and therefore, one glass of liquid might be a lot for them., while others can drink much more.. I know this because when I was researching bed wetting such as you are, I came upon several articles indicating as such..

Diabetes, uti, anxiety, and a lot more or she could just be regressing a little (it does happen) or maybe she sleeping deeper. I'd take her to the doc to rule out anything medical.

backsliding is normal, especially if she has had a big change recently (starting school, ect). Just keep reassuring her it is ok. Punishment will not help, it will only make matters worse. Talk with her to see if she would feel ok sleeping in pull ups again just until her body starts waking her up again. If this feels like a punishment to her, than get those disposable pads you can put under her, and layer her sheets (water proof cover, sheets, water proof cover, sheets) so is she wets at night you can do a quick change and get her back to sleep. Consider taking her to the doctor to test for a UTI, sometimes this can cause wetting. Don't worry, this will pass.

Take her to the Dr, she could have an infection!

If there is no infection, has anything changed in her life recently? Move, loss of family, friend, or pet, something scary, divorce, new daycare or class, parent going back to work, any other B. changes? Sometimes, it can do with that. I would definitely rule out a medical reason first, and then explore that.

Does she have a bladder infection? Is she drinking alot right before bed? Is she not ellimating all the pee when she goes potty? Are there any stresser in her life now? You need to investigate! Just read what "sue" said... you need to call child protective services ASAP. As a foster parent that is definatley a RED flag that she is being abused if she is fighting and screaming about visiting her father. PROTECT your little girl and take action immediatley!

I just heard that constipation can cause pee accidents! That might be something to investigate. Or a urinary tract infection? It may be time to check in with the pediatrician. Good luck!

Has she started anything new? Daycare? Preschool? Night Terrors? Etc? Been around babies lately?

Otherwise I'd say take her to the doctor as well. A UTI could def be the cause!

Yes, as others note, definitely get her checked for a UTI and also consider whether there are any changes in her life that are causing stress and maybe causing her to "backslide" which is fairly normal if there is change (new baby, new house, new preschool, etc.). Add to that: Think carefully about what she is eating and drinking at dinner and close to bedtime to ensure she's not taking in more fluid later in the day than she previously was.

If she's the kind of kid who can go back to sleep easily you can try this: When my daughter was around this age, potty trained but still very young, I had a routine of getting her up just before I went to bed myself (so she'd been asleep alread for several hours) and walking her silently to the toilet, helping her pull down her panties since she was half asleep, and letting her go. She always could produce some urine at that time of night. Then I would walk her back to bed and tuck her in. She never ever remembered these toilet trips but I think they were the reason she very, very seldom wet the bed at that age. Just a tip you can try, but it depends on whether your child will do OK with being wakened and taken to sit on the toilet; mine did great because she pretty much slept through it. I stopped when she was about five but would do it again occasionally if we had had an unusual day or it had been very hot and she'd been drinking a lot late into the day.

She has other things on her mind, she is learning tons of new things and the part of her brain that regulates the potty stuff is just....on hold right now. She will go back to being potty trained before too long.

My daughter did this and much to our surprise she had a urinary tract infection...I didnt know that bed wetting and peeing her pants were a sign but when I called her pedi and spoke with a nurse she told her to bring her right in...sure enough a day or so later the pain started to set in...once the antibiotics took affect she was a completely different person!!
