My son has 2 ear infections, he has been taking omoxicillan for 24hrs. He has diahrea (I heard from the antibiotics).... but today, he lost his appetite, he has vomited once after one bottle of formula. He ate 2 jars of food, then in the afternoon kept 8oz of formula down. He's been drinking a little bit of water/juice today, but he has not pee'd for 8.5hrs now. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi G.,

My Name is S.,
I am not a Doctor, so I can not give any medical advice. I have worked at a Pediatrics Office for 7 years and my son had such awful ear infections as well when he was an infant.

Try Pedialyte Popcicles, that usually keeps them hydrated without vomiting and this worked for my son. Even the generic brand if more affordable. I would hold off on the juice until the diahrea and vomiting stop. Water and Pedialyte are better. Instead of juice; you can try the Pedialyte drink- my son would only take the grape flavor and you can give it with water. In a bottle -- half drinking water and half Pedialyte.

I have 2 children ages 11 and 15, so I have been down this road a few times and I am glad to help as much as I can.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely, S. :-)

Pedialyte popsicles. Or regular popcicles. He can go without formula and food but he can quickly become dehydrated because of the diahrea. Pedialyte really is the best. Don't worry about his appetite. It will return when he gets better. Good luck

I hope you've consulted your pediatrician by now,if these symptoms have continued, as I read your request almost 30 hours after it was posted and was concerned of many possibilities of complications that may have occurred, especially if symptoms persisted. My prayers are with you for your son's speedy recovery. Babies become dehydrated very quickly, and diarrhea with lack of urination are signs this may be occurring. There is also a possibility of other complications that may need assessed and treated. Unless he has begun drinking normally and the diarrhea has subsided, with no more vomiting, and normal wet diapers, he should be seen promptly by a health professional.
If you are only having problems with diarrhea, I would suggest increasing fluids, possibly pedialyte or ginger ale, (as it is a natural way to reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting) and feeding bananas and yogurt, as bananas tend to tighten stools and yogurt can help maintain stomach fluids and digestion and help to prevent urinary tract infections that often follow antibiotic use.
Again I pray for your son's speedy recovery. Act quickly to get advice from your pediatrician when any significant abnormalities begin, especially when started on medication, as children can get seriously ill without prompt intervention.

I would highly suggest you call your doctor and discuss this with him. If he doesn't do anything, I would get a second opinion quickly or take him to the ER!

1. Take his temperature.
2. Call his doc since some symtoms may be new. The doc office will want to know his temp.
If he doesn't have one, they'll prbobably tell you to keep him hydrated and not to worry about the food. If he has a temp, they may want to see him again.

If he is taking antibotics, give him some yogurt to help his tummy. I would give mine pedilyte when they vomited and had diarrhea. I would definately call the dr if he hasn't pee'd in such a while.

It is very tough having a sicky babby. First off, keep your docter notified. I have for 4 children and am 33 yrs old. I currently an e.m.t and I hope I can help.KEEP THE DOCTER INFORMED.
EARS- TRY TO KEEP YOUR BABBY UPRIGHT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.THIS WILL HELP WITH THE PAIN OF HIS EARS.
DONT STOP THE ANTIBIOTICS!!
IT CAN MAKE HIM VOMIT AND DIAHREA,JUST MAKE SURE HE IS NOT DEYHDERATED.PINCH LIGHTLY AND PULL UP HIS SKIN ON HIS ARM AND SEE HOW EASY HIS SKIN LAYS BACK DOWN. IF IT GOES DOWN SLOW,THIS MEANS HE HIS VERY DEHYDERATED AND SHOULD BE TAKEN TO YOUR DOCTER.TRY TO GIVE HIM LITTLE SIPS AT A TIME TO REPLENISH HIS FLUIDS.HE MIGHT GET MAD AND WANT MORE BUT ONLY A TEASPOON EVERY 10 MIN.IF HES HOLDING IT DOWN,GIVE A LITTLE MORE.
BABBYS GET VERY DEHYDERATED VERY FAST SO REALLY MAKE SURE YOU GET HIM FLUIDS AND WATCH HIM CLOSELY.IF HE DOES NOT PEE SOON, TAKE HIM IN.HE SOUNDS DEHYDERATED.I HOPE THIS HELPS I KNOW HOW SCARY IT FEELS WITH A SICK BABIE.HANG IN THERE AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF.GET LOTS OF FLUIDS(WATER)AND GOOD FOOD FOR YOU SO YOU WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH YOUR HANDSOME LITTLE GUY!TAKE CARE.

Have you been keeping track of his temperature? He will need more fluids, or he will dehydrate, and have to be hospitalized. Amoxillen is not necessarily the appropriate antibiotic; call the Dr and tell him what's going on. The lack of pere is not a good sign. Hope it gets better- S.

Have you heard of the "BRAT" diet? Banannas, Rice (or anything starchy), Applesause, and toast (or crackers). It's just like when you have an upset stomach, and eat only bland foods. The main thing is to keep your son hydrated. Popcicles, juice, koolaid - whatever liquid you can get into him.
Also, you didn't specify your son's age - is he old enough to do away with the bottle for now? I'm sure the milk isn't helping much with the infection or the upset stomach.
I wouldn't worry so much about the loss of appetite - you just need to keep him hydrated as much as possible.

Last fall and winter were ear infection city for us with my son and the inner ear problems caused lots of vomiting. Someone else recommended Pedialyte - that kept my son hydrated and I was able to give it to him when he was sick at 9 mos. Keep an eye on him and call your dr.'s office (if you haven't already) to ask about signs of dehydration and when to bring him in. My philosophy is, if it makes you feel better, take him in to get checked out anyway - your doctor, an urgent care center, wherever you need to go for your own peace of mind.

Check out the link that Mary K. gave from the holistic pediatrician. We have been working with a homeopath re: my son's health since May and I wish we had known her when we were in our ear infection stage. Be careful with those antibiotics, they can really get to those little digestive systems. Talk to someone knowledgeable about giving your son acidopholus (sp?) or something else to re-balance his system.

I have heard wonderful things from people who used chiropractic when their kids had ear infections. They were able to take care of the ear infections (and vomiting) without antibiotics. I will forever kick myself for not doing this for my son before going the 'tubes in the ears' route. I wanted to try it, hubby didn't, and I should have overruled him. Anyway. . . my point is to follow YOUR instincts. If you are worried about his present state, find someone who will help you in the way that you and your child need help. Good luck. This will pass and he'll be his sweet little self soon.

My thoughts are that he could either not be reacting well to the amoxicillan...thus the diahrea and vomitting. And/OR, having an ear infection (let alone 2) really hurts and will cause a loss of appetite. Not to mention that sucking on a bottle with an ear infection is difficult. Give him some time and lots of TLC. I'm not a huge fan of antibiotics...they can be given too freely and our children's immune system can be compromised when we rely on antibiotics too much to heal our bodies, and not let our own immune system do the work. However, sometimes we do need them, and since he is already taking them it is REALLY really important to finish the whole prescription..usually it's 10 days.
As far as him having wet diapers. Try to stay with water and keep out the juice. The sugar in the juice isn't helping his immune system. Continue to keep him hydrated but just let him drink to thirst. Water is one of the best things to help flush out the nasty stuff out of our body.
He should be back to normal soon enough. If he still has diahrea and/or vomiting, talk to his Dr. about it...he just could have a strong reaction to the antibi. or he's sick on top of the ear infection:(

I know it's hard when our little ones aren't feeling well...but he'll get better.
