I have a 8 month old son. He was taking naps reguraly and doing good. Well about three weeks ago he decided that he isn't going to take naps anymore. He gets really sleepy around 3pm but fights the nap. Then he getts really cranky and just crawls around whining. It drives me nuts and no matter what I do he won't take a nap. Then at about 8pm he falls a sleep for about 30 mins and won't go back to sleep till about 10pm. I don't know what to do. Please help what should I do??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advise. He actually just started crawling about a week ago and that is when the naps stopped. I think he is getting more teeth in also. He did take a nap yesterday it lasted about 45 mins. but he still fell asleep at about 9 and woke up at 9:30 then didn't go back to sleep till 11. I am tring to get him on a schedule but we are staying with my inlaws right now and it's kinda hard. Grandma wants to pick him up ever time he makes a noise. I don't know how to say no to her so he is getting really spoiled.

mY DAUGHTER WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET ON A SLEEP SCHEDULE SO WE TRIED THE "NO CRY SLEEP SOLUTION" ITS A GREAT BOOK THAT YOU CAN READ FAIRLY QUICKLY WITH GET SLEEP ADVICE... BASICALLY WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS ROUTINE ROUTINE ROUTINE..EVEN IF THAT MEANS FOR A WEEKS STAY HOME AND SET IT UP..ONCE ITS IN PLACE YOUR LIFE WILL BE 100% EASIER.. ALSO DOT WAIT TILL THE CHILD IS OVER TIRED... THEN ITS TOO LATE.. CHECK IT OUT..I KNOW YOU CAN ORDER ONLINE OR GET AT BARNES AND NOBLES AND WALDENS. :) GOOD LUCK

My oldest daughter went through something similar...around nine months she was also refusing naptime. I realized that she had some new teeth coming in and was going through a bout of separation anxiety. I had to spend some extra time with her to get her to calm down...rocking her to sleep, taking a nap with her some days(which I desperatly needed anyway), I also found that hyland's teething tablets and oragel were tons of help...the teething tablets are homeopathic and are used for teething and general crankiness...

Hey A.,
My husband actually figured out this trick. We take ice water and dip her pacifier in it and stick it in her mouth as we are rocking her. We might have to dip it in the cold water a couple of times for it to work. It makes her suck on it more and it knocks her out. Try it, it might work for your little one too.

With my son when he is fighting sleep i put him in a quiet room and leave him be. He will cry for up to 15 minutes but eventually he will fall asleep even if it is for only 15-30 minutes it improves his demeanor.

As far as the waking up after being put to bed, my son did that for awhile too. I would give him some gas meds and a 2-4 ounce bottle and rock him. He would go right back to sleep within about 10 minutes.

If it is teething you could try giving motrin/ibuprophen/advil, it is a little better than tylenol bc it reduces swelling as well as pain and it lasts longer so he can sleep better. If you haven't given him motrin yet tho ask your dr. first if they think it's safe for your baby.
Unless he has any weird allergies or any health problems it should be.

Good Luck!

Is he crawling? or trying too? I've noticed with my 11 month old that any time a big developmental milestone OR teething is about to occur, he sleeps less, and fights his naps a bit. It's like it's all that's on his mind, focusing on the new talent!! The main thing is to stay consistant (for me at least) still offering naps at the regular nap times, that way his body clock doesn't get out of wack! Others mentioned teething tablets if that is the case, and those work great for some!! Good luck, and remember, it will pass!!!

My son used to do that. He also used to take 3 or 4 naps a day...now its only 1 for either a hour or 30 mins. I found that it was due to teething. RIGHT before the tooth pops through....he gets like that, then while its in the middle of coming through he gets like that too. I give my son My Little Teethers (made by the same people as My little Tummies) and he takes a nap. Its little pills that dissolve in the mouth. I wasnt sure about them when he was younger..but he didnt choke on them, he loves them. You can try that our Natures Cure Teething Liquid. They both work wonders. My son is currently cutting a molar, so I have to give him both in order for him to start taking a nap. Good luck:-)
