Hello! Help!!! I was just getting used to my son sleeping through the night when....he rolls over onto his belly, and gets mad. He doesn't know how to get himself to roll back. Last night it was on the hour..i heard him grunting head up..looking around. I'm so tired. He wont sleep on his belly (which i dont think they are supposed to at this point)..What am I supposed to do..wake up all night!! If anyone has had this problem..I would love to know what works??? I put him in carseat at 4:30am...but I'm trying to get him out of that habit.

thanks,
T.

So What Happened?

A sleep positioner..I have...but he lifts his legs above it, and holds them there. It is kinda funny! I called the doctor's, and the nurse said to let him be. I would drive myself crazy if I kept going up. Last night I went up once, because he was at the bottom of the crib..I moved him back up, and gave him pacifier. left on belly...he seems to be adjusting...crying it out seems to work! Thanks for all advice!

I used rolled up blankets wedged slightly under my daughters sides until she was old enough to roll safely.

My son used to do the same thing. try rolling up two towels and sticking them under the sheet next to his sides.

Hi T.,

Perhaps if you co-sleep with him, you can quickly roll him back when he starts fussing and you won't really lose much sleep. I co-slept with both of my children, the youngest being 9 mo and still co-sleeping. He now will sleep on his side when he wants to sleep closer to mama for nursing or to daddy for warmth.
He may continue to do the same thing. Another thing you could try is putting pillows around him.

Good Luck.

Hello! If you look in the stores, they make this sort of triangle thing that you put on the baby's side that prevents him from rolling over. I used it for my second son, and it worked so well! (He actually began rolling over when he was less than a month old because he had such a temper!) If he's doing it by accident and not really by force, it may help.
Good luck!

Why not try a sleep positioner... I had to use on with my dd b/c when she was an infant she would shake and it would wake her. They have them at Babies R Us for as little as $10

Hi T.,
Both my children went through this and although it is exhausting, it won't be long before he can turn himself back over. You can help him by working with him on turning over, You can do this during the day. And at night you can just give him a little assistance instead of just turning him over. Also, once they begin turning over, you can let him sleep on his belly or however he wants. My doctor always said, just ry stopping them. Good luck. I remember the time. We are actually expecting our third and the sleepless nights are the thing I am least looking forward to.

Have you thought about using a sleep positioner? That might solve the problem--they sell them at Babies R Us and Target.

Hi
There is a special pillow that you can get so he doesn't roll over.
It looks like two triangles together with space in the middle for his body. It makes it so a baby doesn't rool over and will stay on their backs. this worked for my daughter.

It's been awhile since I have had a 5 month old but they used to have this thing to keep them on their backs. It was a safety thing- like two big tubes covered in mesh and connected by velcro that you could adjust to however wide your child is. They might have it still in stores, it was just about two years ago that I had it so I would think it should still be around. Good luck and hopefully good sleep.

Glad that phase is over. You will be tired, but it will pass. Just be thankful that your little man is very normal and able to perform all these new tricks! Good luck and remember to take care of yourself, get a break when you can, nap when he naps :)

My son did the same thing when he started being more mobile. We used a sleep wedges (the two triangles joined with fabric that was mentioned by another mom), and that kept him in place for a while. Once he got to where he could move more independently, we had about 2 weeks where just about every other night or every two nights, he woke up and cried for anywhere from an hour to two or three until he was finally tired enough to go back to sleep. At first we thought all these other things were going on, but after it ended, decided it was just him getting used to having more movement. We never took him out of the crib -- we stayed with him, with a hand on him or talking softly to him to calm him down. It was exhausting! But there was an end, and he was back to being a good sleeper.

This is a very common problem, unfortunately. For us, this went on about 4 -6 weeks. It is frustrating/annoying/difficult. Hang in there. There is not much that can be done other than to wait it out. Sorry!

The only thing to help with this is time. He is just learning how to roll from back to tummy, he hasnt yet learned to roll tummy to back. The only thing I would suggest is to give him extra tummy play time during the day to strengthen those muscles so he will learn how to roll himself back. It really shouldnt be too long before he learns this, hang in there...... I've been through this exact thing, twice!!
Best of Luck

Hi T.. My son never had that problem..but..I was given a gift at my baby shower that I think might help you. I'm not what it is called, but it is a foam thing that is slightly inclined.. helps for babies that cannot be flat on their backs due to reflux and stuff like that.. but it had two "bumper pad things" that prevented the baby from rolling .. You kind of just tuck the kid in there and he's good to go.. I just looked it up online.. this is not the exact one I had.. does not have the foam incline thing.. just the bumper pads which I think is what you need.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2341851

It's made by FIRST YEARS..(I used alot of their products and loved them all.. my son is 3 now) it's: The First Years Air Flow Sleep Positioner by Learning Curve

Hope this helps.. sleep deprivation is one of the worst things about motherhood as far as I'm concerned.. Good Luck!

You are correct, babies are NOT supposed to sleep on their bellies due to increased risk for SIDS.
Try using one of the "wedges" they make to keep babies on their backs while sleeping.
It worked for our daughter when she was a baby!

Hi T.,

I had the exact same problem with my son when he was about that age.... I had always used a wedge for him so he slept on his side because he was a constant spit-up baby and I was so paranoid that he would choke. When he started rolling over and waking himself, i used another wedge in the front so he couldn't roll.... I only needed it for a few weeks before he figured out how to roll all the way over. Once he figured that out, he slept all night. Good Luck!

Hi T. -

I think this problem will continue until he is able to do a full roll over. What I would do is put him in a swing during the night so that he is upright and can't roll. Then during the day, I would try to put him on his tummy and practice rolling as much as possible. Once he is able to do a full rollover then I would put him back in the crib. Don't worry so much about trying to get him out of his carseat or swing. You have to do what works - and what keeps your sanity. My daughter slept in her swing until she was one and had no problems transitioning to her crib.

Also, something that may be worth checking into is those foam structures that go under the crib sheets - They provide a structure around the baby. I am not sure if they will prevent rolling or not - but may be worth a try

I don't know how many or what other recommendations you have recieved but I have raised 5 kids and when I was having a problem much like the one you are having I found this contraption that resembled two rolls. It looked like the roll pillows but had a piece of material that velcroed the "pillows together. That way it could hold them as tight or as freely as you wanted. It also propped them up on their side or kept them from rolling. It would be easy to assemble one on your own.

Place a piece of fabric flat on the floor (or any hard surface). Now place a roll pillow long ways on the left end of the fabric then place a roll pillow long ways on the right end of the fabric. That is how it will look. To attach the pilows to the fabric you could use the velcro that peels and sticks. You can adjust the width of the opening between the pillows to accomodate your baby. You may also be able to find the contraption at babys-r-us. It has been a long time though since my kids were babys.

my son does this too! someone gave us a sleep positioner - a small little blanket with two foam triangles on either side - it prevents him from rolling over. we only use it in his crib at night, generally he is ready to go to bed at night and not full of energy..hopefully he'll learn how to roll back before he figures out how to roll over this! i believe you can buy these at babies r' us
ps - i used my yoga brick until i realized i had this other thing...(my son only rolls to one side...)
