My 10 Month Old Is Not Crawling Yet.

I am concerned that my 10 month old is not crawling yet. I know he wants to but when he tries he ends up on his stomach. I have tried helping him with a rolled towel but he gets frustrated. I called the doctor and he says it's normal. I just feel bad that he can't explore the world when he so desperately wants to. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello Everyone! First, I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and encouragement. I really appreciate those who shared similar stories.
Second, my son started to crawl! He looks like an inch worm but soon I'm sure he'll put together the mechanics.
Thanks again!!!!!

My son is now 5 years old and he didnt crawl until after he was walking!!! He was a little round thing and couldnt hold up his weight long enough to actually crawl. Just give him some time. I think he will do fine.

My girls did not start crawling until they were around 10 months old. My 14 month old used to swim across the floor and I swear that if thier was an Olympic sport fo floor swimmimg, she would have gotten a gold medal! LOL Anyway every child developes at different paces. Just when you think he isn'nt ready yet, BOOM! he's off and crawling! Try putting one of his favorite toys a bit out of his reach in front of him and see what happens! Good Luck!!

Hi, Byron White, in my opinion the best developmental psychologist, recommends in this situation to get a walker and just keep an eagle eye on them--because your son really will get frustrated by not exploring, and much fussier than he needs to be.

my son was a late crawler, and a late walker, but an early talker, so go figure.

good luck, and hope he's crawling already.

Hi T., My daughter was 12 months when she first started to crawl. And she started to walk about 2 weeks after that. Every child is different so he will crawl when he's ready.

Hi T.,
My daughter was barely crawling at that age....actually she was barely scooting. Today she is 13 months old and took her first step towards me, and she crawls everywhere. So...it isn't that out of the ordinary. We started putting things she really liked just out of her reach and she started scooting on her tummy to get them. It was almost like a swimming motion kind of thing. She would be on her tummy and scoot across the floor. We have hard wood floors and she started scooting when we let her off the blanket onto the actual floor. Instead of placing a rolled blanket under him, try to let him scoot to his toys or a sippy cup. Very rarely is this ever a cause for concern, but if you are ever worried about it, keep bringing it up with the doctor. That is what they are there for. If he is normal in every other aspect, though, I am sure that he is fine and will begn to amaze you with his moving shortly.
Good luck.

My little guy didn't do a real crawl on his hands and knees until a little after he turned 11 months. He was only doing an army crawl on his belly before that. But then within about 2 weeks of really crawling, he started walking. In fact, he was taking 1 or 2 steps before he started crawling. They go in their own order.

Once he realizes that it is faster to crawl than slither - he'll get up on his knees.

My first daughter was almost 11 months when she first crawled (my second was 8 months--just goes to show that every kid is different). Just keep encouraging him with lots of tummy time and floor play. He'll get it, and you will be chasing after him in no time!

I have a 1 year old daughter and I didn't think she would ever crawl, but she started at 10 1/2 months. It was all of a sudden, she actually started crawling on the bed, and crawled right off of it and onto the floor! The she was walking before she turned 1, so I'm sure he will start any day now.

My first daughter never really crawled, only a bit of army crawling. She walked at 10.5 months intead. AHH! My second crawled all over the place at six months. Each child is different and your baby will be on the move before you know it.

Hi T.!
It's I. Again. Don't worry about the crawling and such. HE will crawl when he is ready. My oldest didn't crawl until 13 mo, and walk 14 mo. Now he's always on the go, so enjoy the non mobility! LOL. My 10 mo old isn't crawling yet either, but scoots everywhere in his walker and then rolls everywhere when he's on the floor. In time he will go, and then watch out! LOL. Enjoy! Hope all is well!

Crawling is not a milestone. Some children never crawl. My son crawled like a frog using both legs to push. Each child is different. I know you are looking forward to see him do it, but don't think that there is anything wrong with your child.

Don't worry...I recently read in a parenting magazine, that the average expected age for crawling is by 12 months. You can't rush these things, he will figure it out soon enough and you will be so proud of your little guy!

I say give him some time, some kids take a little longer to start crawling, there's nothing wrong with it, it is completely normal.

Try putting a 'throw' pillow under his stomach. Not a large one. Just one that fits under his belly. Don't help him get off the pillow. He WILL learn to crawl.

Devon started crawling at 9 months and walking at 11 months. Some don't crawl and go straight to walking. He started off backward, he wouldn't go forward.

Does yours cruise around the furniture? If he didn't get a lot of tummy time, he may not like it. If the doctors not worried I wouldn't worry. Especially if his is trying!

Some children rather not crawl and just jump right into walking. instead why don't you try an exersauser(not sure it is spelled right) to strengthen the legs. You should see a difference in a week or two and try to put the child on the stomach(on the floor) holding that part of the body and rock front to back holding the child's stomach. It helps building muscles in the arms and legs. that way he will learn what he should be doing.I have tried that with two of my children and by 10 months they were crawling. I have a five month old and have already started working with him in the exercsaucer, that way he will build the muscules he needs in order to crawl.
