The little plastic ipod/music player by parents. Super simple, all they have to do is push a button and my daughter is 3... still plays with it! My other all time favorite is the Busy Ball Popper by Playskool. It's awesome! All kids that come here love it too. You will also get great excercise when there is new batteries in the popper. Balls go everywhere and the kids laugh.

The fisher price ride on bus, etc are great. Our daughter would walk behind it before she could walk on her own and at 2 1/2 now she still sits on it and rides it. Also the Laugh & Learn (i think) piggy bank was a big hit...

a push toy that then can be made into a ride on, parents busy bee bop band set, another toy by parents it has 4 balls that you hit w/ a hammer my son loved it, basic wooden puzzles, an activity cube

edited: my son is 3 1/2 and still plays with his bee bop band set. We march around the house at least once a day with it.

old fashioned colored blocks, giant foamy floor puzzles, books, shape sorter. she won't able to complete many of these at first but you can play with all of these things before being able to solve a puzzle.

The Jumperoo was my first thought.
Second, any music toys, videos or cds. Our kids have LOVED LOVED LOVED their music. To play with instruments, dance with videos or jam out to kids music cds. Our littlest one got a s sound machine that has a night light and plug in for an MP3 player too! It was a very thoughtful gift from his godmother.

Walker wagon (ie Brio, Radio flyer - child pushes and it rolls along slowly - great for pulling up on in a month or so).

Personalized books with the child's name in them, or personalized CDs with same. We LOVE our Iseeme books that use animals to teach the kid's name. Shape sorters are also super for that age. My favorite (I work with babies and kids) is the Tolo rolling shape sorter. It can be used for years! A red wagon is a good gift for that age or one of those push cars.

I'm not sure what exactly your needs/goal/budget are but if you don't already have a convertible car seat, you could buy that. We've got the Alpha Omega and LOVE it. My son got his for Christmas when he was 7 months old (we needed it and at that age they don't understand about presents). He always hated the infant seat so we wanted the convertible, which he was much happpier in and we were able to keep him rear facing past his 1st birthday.

A wagon. My parents got my son an awesome All-Terrain Radio Flyer wagon for Christmas last year. Its great for picnics, camping, amusement parks, walks...etc. We've never used the stroller much but definitely get our use out of the wagon!

A push behind to ride on toy would be great.
