My standard 1st birthday gift (because all 3 of my kids loved theirs) is a ride on toy. You know the ones you can either ride on or stand behind and push. There are some for around 20 dollars on up. Leaf frog makes a great one if you can find it. It has all the push buttons that sing songs and teach colors and numbers - The sounds might drive you crazy because when they first get it all they want to do is push the buttons, but you can always take the batteries out. LOL But this has been a winner with all of my kids.
Congratulations on you little one. Enjoy!

My son LOVES the wooden blocks he got fir his first birthday. He's 18 months now and plays with them every day! Not sure if that's a boy thing or not but I woudl definitely recommend basic wooden blocks. Good luck!

Baby dolls are great, my daughter has toted them around since she was walking. She loves anything musical, shakers, pretend guitars, little piano, bongo's, microphone, etc. Of course, us as parents don't always like the noisy ones, but the little ones do love them! Her favorite (still) is drawing in the bathtub with the bath crayons or bath chalk. FUN!

My daughter just turned one and her favorites are a Fisher Price stroller that she can push around, one of the little activity tables that you stand at and push buttons to make noises or make the ball popper in the center work, the little kitchen with a blender, and the Parent's Magazine Bee Bop Band. Happy Birthday!
