Hi Moms. This is my second pregnancy and I am having the worst time with morning sickness and other digestive complications. I'm about 9 wks along and I've been joking with my husband that we're not doing this again - that bad! I remembered the fatigue but this is almost debilitating. My doctor prescribed Zofran but it's not the miracle drug I was hoping for. I still feel absolutely terrible - like having the stomach flu but without the fever. Does anyone have any advice or any remedies that worked for them? Ginger ale has not worked either :) Thanks everyone!!

What can I do next?

My second was the worst!
I tried ginger ale, ginger capsules, crackers.
Nothing.

Then I tried really tuning into what I wanted to eat (had to push past that UCK feeling to tune in) and so...then I was eating MEAT - like roast beef! first thing in the AM. I remember it still, I especially remember craving "swiss steak" with tomatoes.

On the days I had at least a small amount of meat early in the AM no nausea. YEA!

J. I had horrible sickness with my second pregnancy and used the Sea-Bands they helped quite a bit. I had 7 months of sickness! I just found out # 3 is on the way and will pull those back out again! Hope it helps!

Dear J., the only thing I can think of is eat lightly but healthy for awhile until you feel better. Maybe ginger ale and some saltines for awhile to help settle your stomach. A little toast and tea. Things like that. I hope you feel better soon, poor girl. Good luck and try to take it easy. N.

Are you taking vitamins? I went thru 3 months of having terrible morning sickness before I stopped taking the vitamins. They were making my sensitive stomach sick. I would then supplement with other things to try to make sure I got all the right vitamins I needed. I just could not stomach those pills.

Take food in small increments. Avoid acidic foods. I got sick on red pasta sauce. I drink ginger tea. They have it in asian stores or take sliced ginger in hot water add sugar or honey and drink. Good luck. I feel for you.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but dried papaya is good for nausea too.

I know it doesn't seem like it but this too shall pass. Second pregnancies do not mimic the first unfortunately. I always was amazed at the women that already twenty seven kids, a full job as a corporate lawyer and weren't tired or sick while they were pregnant. It was pretty similar for me. It sounds kind of counterproductive since it feels like the flu like feeling a lot, but if you can eat more of anything that does seem to settle your stomach. Of course healthy foods, but cereals like Total and crackers really help. Enough said go hug your little one and onward ho!

Many people I know swear by preggy pops.

Morning sickness is often caused by low blood sugar. Try eating small amounts of protein often... nuts for example.

Try chewing gum when you start to feel sick. Prevented many vomit sessions for me.

I found that Altoids lemon or tangerine helped with my nausea, the sourer the better. Suck on a lemon, my grandma gave me that one from her generation...
Everyone I've told, it has worked.

I had horrible pregnancy nausea with all three of my kids! I could barely keep anything down. I think the sea bands on my wrists definitely took the edge off. I also took a vitamin B supplement in addition to my pre-natal vitamin. On days I forgot to take the vitamins, I definitely noticed a difference. Eat them with food though. Also, even if you're not feeling hungry, keep at least something in your stomach. When your blood suger is low, the nausea will be much worse. I kept saltines in my nightstand and would often wake up in the middle of the night and eat just a couple. I think it helped. Good luck. You will make it through this :)

Hi J., I too feel for you... Only my middle child gave me that much stomach trouble thank goodness. I am suggesting a product by "Essential Oils" Pure peppermint I believe it is? It helped my niece like nothing else would. Yours is so severe I am thinking the sea-band suggestions, the protien, crackers & the oil just may give you some relief. Also I do remember I eliminated the regular prenatal vitamins & chose prenatals from my health food store instead of the traditional. I found them at a great store called Sweet Grass on Busse & Golf in Mt Prospect/Arlington Hts. I'm pretty sure that any health food store would help you figure out what you can discuss with your doctor. Mine was at that time a traditional MD & he approved something made from seaweed. That helped a lot as well. Search for an Esstential oil rep in your area & they too will know what is best for queezy stomach. Good Luck & we all know our kids are so worth....it's just the journey getting there!

Yuk. Brings back hard memories of my last two pregnancies. Zofran worked for me, sort of. It made it just possible to get through the day caring for my other two little ones. I was still nauseated most of the day, but I could function. I found that lighting vanilla scented candles helped a little too. But the thing that saved me was that I stopped eating most solid food during the last half of my pregnancies - I drank Ensure milk shakes, which sounds silly, but really helped. Not sure if it was the cold fluid, the lack of animal fat, or my stomach not having to work hard at digestion. I still remember putting a can of ensure, most of a tray of ice cubes and a banana or cocoa powder and sugar into a blender at all hours of the day. I could still eat some grains, but animal fats put me out.
oh, I also remember that in the beginning I had some luck with vitamin b6 and unisom (sold as a combination pill for morning sickness in Canada but not in the US). But that was before I got the Zofran. Meclizine works for some people too - I think that's what's in the non-drowzy dramamine. Didn't work for me. Still doesn't for motion sickness, but works like a charm for my son.
Try it all, and good luck!

Hi!
I can sympathize. I actually thre up throughout both my pregnancies, but the beginnings were the WORST!! Preggy pops did work for me. I also used Sea Bands on my wrists--they only helped a little. During my second pregnancy I took a half of a unisom and a Vitamin B before I went to bed. It worked great! I was able to sleep and it helped somewhat with the nausea the whole next day! Too bad I didn't try that the first time around!

Good Luck--it should get better!!

J. - I also used Sea Bands. They helped some with first pregnancy, and not much with second, but it may be worth a try. I don't remember where I got them. You could find a nautical store, or ask an acupuncturist, or maybe on line. Hopefully you will only have a few weeks of this!

I feel for you. I'm at the end of the first trimester of my third pregancy and had a rough time around 7 weeks with this pregnancy. With the first two, I always found things I wanted to eat, but with this one, I coudln't stomach anything. It is getting better now, but something my mother-in-law suggested was sour food, like grapefruit and ginger snaps. The grapefriut has really helped a lot. As with the other pregnancies, I found that if my stomach became empty, I would get violently ill. It's hard, though, to keep it full when you don't want to eat anything! Have you tried to eat small things throughout the day? I also found that when I felt the worst, I was also a little dehydrated, so try to make sure I drink plenty of water.

Good luck and hang in there. You should feel better in a few weeks!

J., I feel for you. My morning sickness got worse with each of my three pregnancies. My nutritionist at the time explained that I needed to eat protein even if it tasted icky. Protein stays in your system longer so helps absorb the stomach acids which make you feel sick. Even a few small bites of chicken or something else you can swallow. Eat very little fatty food. Other things that helped were Sweetarts (!), 7/11 Slurpies. Saltines didn't help me. I also ate plain angel hair pasta. Also, eat either real hot or cold foods. I found frozen yogurt smoothies to be tolerable. I did end up taking Reglan during my third pregnancy, which really helped.
Good luck. Your reward at the end will make you forget all about this stage!!!

hey J.,
what we moms go thru for our kids, huh? Zofran helped me for a day and then I was bad again. I tried all the remedies and the only thing that really helped to Promethegan (which is a suppository). Not the nicest way to take meds but it totally works. Hang in there!!

I was fine as long as I was eating something. Unfortunately, I rarely felt well enough to want to eat. So eventually I figured out to keep small bags of small snack items with me at all times - work, purse, car, everywhere. The ones I relied on were: for "meals" -- plain animal crackers (the big huge bags from Costco or Walgreen's), soda crackers, goldfish crackers and when I was feeling up for it (!), peanut butter on saltines. For all other times: chewy candies or fruit items -- good & plenty (someone told me black licorice is supposed to help), chewy life savers, dried fruits and fruit snacks.

Good luck -- I always described it as the worse hangover of my life . . . 24-7 for 12 weeks in my case -- and without the fun of the night before to look back on!

I was horribly sick for 20 weeks with my son - Zofran took the edge off, but that's it. Lost 12 pounds in 4 weeks and almost landed in the hospital. Nothing worked for me - sorry - but I do have a friend who was as sick as I was and ate yellow peppers - it worked for her!
