Morning Sickness - Albuquerque, NM

Ok moms, maybe somebody can help me. I'm in my first trimester and I have the worst morning sickness; it actually lasts all day. I can't keep anything down until around 4 or 5 p.m. I've tried the preggie pops, the nausea bands, separating liquids and solids, sniffing lemons, and crackers won't work because I just can't keep them down. I'm worried that I'm not getting any nutrients and now I just feel like I don't want to eat and I am so drained of energy. Any suggestions? I'll appreciate anything.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just want to thank everyone who responded! I'm actually feeling a lot better now; I've been eating crackers in the morning and throughout the day and just forcing myself to eat small portions throughout the day and it seems to be helping. I also got some B-6 vitamins and my doctor prescribed me something but I probably won't need to get it filled. Thanks again!

I had horrible morning sickness too. I lost ten pounds my first trimester from not being able to eat. it did pass though. I could eat egg rolls every now and then, but nothing else. I would even throw up water. it's no fun, but hopefully it'll pass. my mom kept trying to tell me to eat protein everytime i'd call her. i tried it and it just made me worse. whatever you can get down or want at the time, eat. but when you feel like you can't, don't force it. you'll be ok and hopefully it stays short-lived. :o) good luck to you!

I went to GNC and found a ginger root supplement that kind of worked for me. (And they say peppermint, too) I also had to eat before I even got out of bed--just a couple dry crackers to pad my tummy. Then throughout the day, rice cakes, saltines, popcorn if you can...

I have been there. I was sick with both my kids all day long all pregnancy....Nothing worked for me either. However, I read that bananas work for nausea, a friend of mine who had morning sickness, tried to eat bananas and they worked for her.

Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.

Marina,
I feel your pain and hopefully, it will only last for 10 weeks, which is supposed to be the norm. I had morning sickness just like you. I couldn't even go anywhere because it was so bad and it lasted to week 23. The SeaBands did help me some, but it sounds like it isn't helping you much. The main thing is to stay hydrated. Drink Gatorade, water, milk, ginger ale, but avoid juice - it is too acidic and will make things worse on your already testy stomach. I know some ginger ales and sodas taste strange right now, but the ones I could keep down were the natural sodas like Hansons and Big Sky (?). Crackers were about all I could keep down until a little later and I too had the same worries as you about not getting enough nutrients to the baby & almost no weight gain. If you can keep the prenatal vitamin down, this will help.

Mainly, stay hydrated and stay away from sick people because with little food getting in your system, it will weaken your immune system (I caught 8 different illnesses during my pregnancy, including the flu and a stomach virus). It all sounds terrible, but the good news is that it sounds like you have a normal pregnancy, so try to focus on that positive, as hard as it is right now. Also, I had a totally healthy baby after all that. You will too. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,
try ginger ale soda...worked wonders for me. Anything with ginger is supose to help with the nausea feeling. You can purchase ginger tablets at natural grocers (whole foods etc.). Best wishes.

I never understood why they called it morning sickness as I was sick all day too. it seemed like I wasn't keeping anything down as I would get sick after just half an hour from eating. Apparently I was though, because i continued to gain weight. I know it's hard, but you just have to make yourself eat. Since you are getting sick on everything, I suggest sticking to healthy food so that you are absorbing some nutrients and if you are gaining weight you know it's the good kind. Good luck! my "morning" sickness lasted the whole pregnancy. I hope yours doesn't! I'm so jealous of all those who don't know what I'm talking about! :) Good luck!

I was eating 2-3 peanut butter & jelly or honey sandwiches a day for the first five months! You might try that. I also tried smoothies, but the sweet ones made me feel bad.

I actually felt the worst in the morning and evening and just fine during the day (my poor hubby thought it was him making me sick!). Hopefully you won't have to feel bad after your first trimester . . .

I've been there...still there somedays. Have you tried ginger extract and B-6? Take them together, they helped me in my first pregnancy, but be careful, the ginger gave me terrible gas pains if I took it more than every other day...atleast that's what I blamed it on. Also, you can take B-6 with half a unisom or tylenol pm before bed, it helped me with the morning nasuea the most during this pregnancy. If you can't take a prenatal vitamin because of vomiting, make sure you are at least taking some folic acid, they are small and don't need much to get them down. I know how hard it is to find things to eat when you are so sick (I'm 20 weeks today and still down the 20lbs from my prepreggo weight). Anything you eat will help at this point in your pregnancy. During my first trimester with my daughter, all I ate were baby carrots, they were the only thing that stayed down all the time. It's good that you are getting to eat in the evening, I would use that time to try and eat something that will give you some energy, even if it's not much, peanut butter toast is a good boost with good fat, protein and some carbs. One last thing, I couldn't keep down any water, no matter the amount but I found that I could keep down iced tea without any problems. It's really important for you to stay hydrated. Good luck!

I get horrible morning or ALL DAY sickness as well and the thing that helped take some of the edge off was taking 2 ginger root caplets everytime it is time to eat. You should be just fine about not eating. Most women who go through it don't eat much but once it is over you make up for it and the baby is fine. That is the beauty of the fat reserves that is sitting in those places on our bodies. They are fuel. You will be over it soon enough. I have been preggo 3 times and it just doesn't get any more exciting with the first trimester. Hang in there!!!

Ask OB about a combo of B6 and Unisom, two of my friends did really well on that. Ginger anything. Suck on ice chips, it isn't too much liquid at once and will keep you hydrated. Powerade is easier on the stomache than gatorade. If nothing works, try the zofram, it can be expensive though. Good luck!

I had the same problem with both of my pregnancies. I had morning sickness (day and night) for 6 months and nothing would cure it. The only suggestion I can make is to always keep your belly full.. regardless of how much you don't want to eat and how gross any and every food sounds.. eat something that will fill you up.. and it will curb the nausea. The more you don't eat the more nauseous you get.
Good luck and just remember.. it will go away eventually!

I don't want to scare you but I was sick all the way through. I had to be put on an IV to have liquids in me because I felt to sick to even drink. Ask your doctor about medications. I had to eventually get a pick-line (an IV) put in my arm to pump in medicine all day because I would throw up the pill they gave me.
I was kinda scared to take extra medicine at first but if your not getting an nutrition your baby is really not. My doctors said that the medicine that I was on had no effect on the baby at all. I was on Zofran but I think there are other types. Stay away from strong smelling things. My husband and I even had to change to unsented deodotrant. The only thing I could eat for the longest time was peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese, and cereal.
Good luck and if you have any questions about anything I have more info on what is easier to eat and smell.
Also if you crave something..eat it! It's your body's way of telling you that you need it. Good luck!

I too experienced "all-day sickness" and a friend of mine recommended taking a B6 vitamin supplement. My doctor approved a dose of 100mg(I believe)daily and it really seemed to make life more bearable after just a few days. Definitely check with your doctor, though, on dosing before trying this option.

Try eating an apple. I know it sounds funny, but when I was pregnant with my first girl my bosses wife told me to eat an apple every morning to prevent morning sickness. I tried it and was not sick every morning. Every once in a while I did get sick even after eating an apple, but it was not everyday. I know what you are going through with the all day sickness, I had it at least once a week for 9 months.

I would always worry too and my mom always said not to worry your body will get what it needs, (just make sure you arent dehydrated) If you are you may need to go to the Dr's for an IV and some nausea meds. I always make shakes when I am pregnant. Buy the milk egg protein powder (it has more protein than soy and is safer during pregnancy than to much soy) and it doesnt have a funky flavor that can gag you. Make a shake in the blender with whatever you like and add the protein powder, your body will absorb it more quickly (and if it comes back up it isnt hard like foods are!!) You can get the milk egg protein at any of the health food stores or smiths has it in their health food area too. It is about 15 bucks for a can but worth it. I did slimfast shakes and ensure with my first pregnancy than discovered this way is much better, alot more variety and a lot more protein. It works great!!

You poor thing!!! I've been there...sounds like you have "hyperemesis gravidarum". A fancy way of saying REALLY BAD morning sickness...more like all day and night sickness!
I tried all the stuff you mentioned and more, nothing seemed to work for me either. The good news is you don't have to suffer! Talk to your doctor about getting some anti nausea meds. I was put on three different ones (can't remember the names though). My problem is that I'm sensative to meds anyway, so they actually made me feel worse. Then I tried zofran (typically prescribed for cancer patients). It worked so well with no side effects at all! The only down side is that it is sooo expensive, so hopefully your ins. will cover it. Mine would only cover a certain amount, so not only did I spend a fortune on this wonder drug, but sometimes I just had to suck it up and go without. And don't be afraid to go to the ER to get some fluids if needed. I can't even tell you how many times I had to do this because I was so dehydrated and miserable! (Ask them to put some zofran through the IV too...if you ask, they will). Even just getting those fluids sometimes can make you feel a bit better.
So talk to your doctor and get something! And don't worry, your OB would never prescribe you anything that would be "bad" for the baby. Take heart...after a few months it does let up and you'll be happy again, eating everything in sight (making up for lost time ha,ha!).
As miserable as being sick makes you don't worry too much about the baby. I worried myself sick over it (no pun intended) and in the end I delivered a happy healthy babe!
I know how hard and miserable this is, if you need anything or just want to talk feel free to send me a message. Take care and hang in there...as soon as you see your beatiful baby it will be so wrth it!!!

Mine was so bad that I lost 15 pounds- and it lasted for six months- I had to take medication- there are a few different ones they can prescribe- One started with a Z- I cant remember what it was called but its given for chemo patients- and it really helped me keep some food in me- I didn't want to take medicine- but I figured hat the way it was going the baby wasn't getting the nutrients he needed. Also- the medication was very expensive-- and there are some cheaper ones on the market.

It sounds like you have what I have, its called Hyperemesis. Basically it just means you have severe morning sickness. I am 7 months pregnant now and have lost 30 pounds due to not being able to keep any food down but the baby is fine. I had to be hospitalized a couple of times due to dehydration. Talk to your doctor. I have been prescribed Zofran, Phenergan and Reglen and those things do help but I do still throw up every day and my doctor tells me that it is not going to go away for me so I am being induced early at 37 weeks. Most people get better by 16 weeks acording to my doctor. Zofran is a miracle drug in my opinion. I am taking the 8mg zofran oral desolving tablets which are great because you place them under your tongue and they dissolve so even if you throw up 5 minutes later it is still in your system for the full 8 hours. Let me know if you have any questions or need support, I know exactly how you feel. Hang in there and remember that it will all be worth it in the end.

I'm with the Zofran users!!! It's the only thing that works for me. I’m happy to hear that some of the home remedies help other pregnant mom’s, but unfortunately….not me :o(. I'm in week 19 and still have to take it once or twice daily. I took phenegran with my daughter which took away the nausea but all I wanted to do was sleep. I wish I had known about Zofran when I was pregnant with her. All I have to pay is $10.00 for a 30 day supply; insurance covers the rest. Good luck!

Hi! Have you tried vit B6? You can take it three times a day and it can help with nausea. So long as you're not losing weight, you're probably getting enough nutrients. If your prenatal vits make you sick, take them at bedtime. Hope this helps!

I had miserable morning sickness with my daughter through the 20th week (which was awful, but still way better than women who have it all the way through - ugh!!) Ginger candy and citrus fruits (especially sliced oranges in hot tea) helped a little, but the most valuable thing I eventually learned was that constant snacking -- eating little bits of food all the time (trail mix, dried fruit, crackers, cheese sticks...) throughout the day -- made a huge difference. It was weird, but as long as I was eating, I could keep things down. If I went more than about 20 minutes without putting something in my stomach, I would start throwing up. I still felt miserable all the time, but at least I knew I was getting enough food for my baby.

I know lots of women have it worse than that, including my pregnant friend, who's a doctor (general practitioner). She wasn't keeping anything down, was losing weight, and just had no appetite for eating anymore, until her OB told her it was okay to take Dramamine. I'd never heard that before. She only takes it when she's feeling really bad, or can tell she's not going to be able to keep her food down, I think, but it really reduces her nausea and has made the whole experience more bearable. She swears by it, and is confident that it doesn't affect the baby. I'd probably research it more before doing it myself, but I noticed that no one else has mentioned it yet, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Best of luck, and I hope your morning sickness goes away soon! Take solace in the fact that it really is a sign of a healthy baby -- I was miserably sick with my daughter, and she's wonderfully happy and healthy. I've also had two miscarriages (one before I had Katie, the other one recently), and had little or no morning sickness with those pregnancies. I'll take morning sickness over the alternative any day!!

I took the flintstones to try and get something good for me. Go to sprouts and look for nautural remedies. Their selection is great. I could only eat cereal so that was every meal i ate. I think i tried every kind. :) Good Luck. Count down the weeks until around 20 -it gets better from their.. J.

Oh, how I can relate!!! My first 2 boys, I puked for 9 months straight! I only gained 8 pounds with my 2nd baby, but apparently that didn't worry my doctors. I'm 20 weeks pregnant now, and when I hadn't gained any weight at 16 weeks, my doctors put me on Zofran. An anti-nausea med used for chemo patients and whatnot. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

If you're miserable and can't function through a normal day, don't hesitate to ask your doctors for help. This is the first pregnancy I also got meds for heartburn, which, in my previous pregnancies, prevented me from eating also.

No, some women are just sick throughout pregnancy and none of those "home remedies" work. Not one of them. The Zofran is quite expensive, but if you have insurance, I'd ask about it! I wondered at first if it also had a mood enhancer in it because I felt SO much better after the first dose. In reality, it was just the high of not feeling the urge to puke constantly.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I was there - I had 24/7 morning sickness. My doc told me the best thing to do was try to concentrate on carbohydrates because that helps to absorb the excess stomach acid and reduces the nausea.

I know it's hard to try and eat because if you are feeling like I did, the smell is enough to make you sick.

What really worked for me, and it's probably bizarre are bagels and animal crackers. The bagels really helped reduce the nausea. This will pass, and as long as you are taking vitamins, don't worry too much about missing nutrients. Your body will make sure your baby has what he/she needs.

I hope you feel better soon and this phase passes.

I'm with you on the frustration. My doctor told me that if I could keep food down for 10 minutes, the baby would get what he needed. I know I didn't. My total weight gain on the pregnancy was -7 pounds. Great weight loss program! My second was mostly just nausea. A friend told me eating dried blueberries worked for her. I couldn't stand the taste -- result of pregnancy. This time I'm not so bad. I hope you find something that helps.
