I am 6 weeks preganant and have been experiencing extreme nausea. I have been vomitting around 4-5 times a day and have not been able to eat anything of substance for several days. I am nervous to take some medications because I don't want to harm my baby, but I don't think I can survive this much longer.

What can I do next?

Have you thought of some alternative methods? My husband is a chiropractic student about the graduate and I was adjusted the whole pregnancy and took plenty of high quality vitamins and supplements he told me to take. All I know is that I was sick for 2 weeks out of the whole 9 months I was pregnant (my baby is 2 months now) and my mom and sisters were all super sick their whole pregnancies! The only difference was the care I recieved!

I took Zofran with both of my pregnancies, and also had to take Phenegran with this last one. I was sick for 19 weeks both times and hated taking the meds, but I have two healthy, beautiful children. I lost about 10-12 lbs the first one and didn't gain any weight till I was 20 weeks with the second, but, again, they both were fine. Eat anything that sounds good, and drinking decaf tea was good for me.

Hey L.. I have a 9 year old and a 1 1/2 year old little girl and both times I was pregnant, I was sick and felt nauseated ALL the time. I didn't have morning sickness, I had all day sickness!! My doctor said that I could take Emetrol. I really works. I felt like I lived on it. But another tip I can give you is this....keep a package of saltines on your nightstand and in the mornings before you even sit up, eat a couple. It should help with your nausea. But the Emetrol really works and the lemon kind tastes way better than the cherry kind. I hope this helps you and I hope you feel better!!

Have you tried ginger tea? That is natural and can work wonders for settling nausea. You can just boil a piece of ginger if you can't find ginger tea bags . Hope you get through this time. It's all worth it....

I am 10 weeks preggers and going through the exact same thing! I really feel for you!
I can harldy eat anything, let alone keep it down. Even thinkin about food makes me sick, and brushing my teet makes me throw up even more! I talked to my doctor about it and she actually switched my prenatal vitamin to one that is supposed to help ease the nausea. Also, she prescribed me something called phenergan, which really works but makes my pretty tired. The best thing I can advise is talk to your doctor about it, and just eat anything you can! It is better to have something in your stomach, but I hate crackers. I drink a lot of Sprite, and spaghetti actually makes me feel a little better. Something about the acidity in the sauce calms my stomach. Good luck, and hang in there!!

With my first pregnancy I was able to stop the vomitting by taking Zofran tablets by mouth. The nausea was still prevalent; however, I was able to stop the vomitting. With my second pregnancy the Zofran tablets were not enough and my insurance company only allowed enough for three days each month. By my seventh week of pregnancy I was severely dehydrated and my ketone level was measuring an astonishing 3+. My doctor contacted a home health agency (Matria) and a Zofran IV pump was started. I wore an IV pump in my legs for ten weeks and was still often unable to keep food down or fluids in for the majority of the first trimester. Dehydration and weight loss were the doctor's main concern. A nurse once explained to me that water floats on your stomach and will usually be the first thing to come up when nauseas; drink heavy drinks like Slurpees or Sonic slushes. Avoid anything carbonated and don't drink through a straw; air may cause more sickness and indigestion. Also, try a cracker or two and some cheese or peanut butter. Just remember that cheese will contribute to constipation but is good protein. Hang in there. Normally the nausea lessens by the second trimester.

I tried every single homeopathic "cure" and all it did was make it worse. I tried all types of otc and prescription meds and the ONLY thing that worked for me was Zofran. expensixe but worth it.... at 5 months pregnant I had only lost weight... about 10 lbs, and my baby was getting all my nutrients. I looked and felt like a zombie. After I took Zofran, I was able to eat and have a healthier pregnancy (although I still threw up every day the whole 9 months, I could at least eat, and I felt tons better). My son was 8.7 lbs and in the last 4 mo of pregnancy I had gained 40 lbs... so it definantely worked for me!

There are one or two safe medications that you can take. I'd check with your doctor.

Hi L.. Although I didn't experience your symptoms in my own pregnancy, I know someone who did. She was nauseous throughout her entire 9 month pregnancy and actually lost weight. She had to go on medication to curb the vomiting and took it almost the entire time. Her baby boy was born perfectly healthy.

If you are nervous ask the doctor about potential side effects, and go on-line and do research. But do something, because vomiting and losing too much weight during your pregnancy can cause an even bigger risk to your child then taking the medication.

Good luck

I asked the same question a few weeks ago:

http://www.mamasource.com/request/6635325195030626305

I have found that from week to week the things that help change. This week, it's a huge cup of sonic ice and caffiene-free coke. You need to keep food in you... I keep quaker oats cereal by the bed in a zip lock. I can't stand crackers!!! I eat twice in the middle of the night.

Also, make sure you don't lay down for at least an hour after eating. You need to let gravity help with your digestion.

Good luck dear!!!! I'm right there with you! You can do this!!!!!!!

L.,

I went through severe nausea when I was pregnant - from 6 to 13 weeks. I had zofran which allowed me to work fulltime through that period. In fact, I used to take just half a tablet of zofran and kept cutting it down as my pregnancy progressed - to one fourth of a tablet and finally one eigth. I now have a 12 week old baby and he is doing fine. Of course, pl. check with your doctor before taking any medication. Good luck and hang in there!

It's better to stay away from the meds but your doctor or midwife should be able to help you determine what you need. Assuming you are like most women, which is to say you'll just have to suffer through, here is a list of non-med things that helped me. I was horribly nauseous for about 18 hrs a day (and vomited every 3rd or 4th day with bizarre regularity) for about 4 months. I thought it would never end but it does, eventually.

1. lemon juice - add to your water and try to make lemon water the first thing you drink in the morning when you wake up; or lemonade works well too.
2. protein snacks - skip the crackers and try protein instead such as a handful of nuts or a waffle or half bagel with peanut butter.
3. eat lots of very regular, healthy, "mini" meals during the day - helps regulate your blood sugar and means there's less in your stomach to throw up if you do - for example, I ate something every 2-3 hours w/ my first meal before I sat up in bed and my last as I was lying down to sleep. Have to make these fairly small, however, or you'll gain weight fast. :-)
4. keep some kind of food (for e.g., cereal) next to your bed that you can eat a handful of before you sit up in bed in the morning.
5. cucumbers - one of my mini meals was a bowl of sliced cucumbers, I ate mine w/ a little balsamic vinegar and some salt & pepper.
6. salt - try the warm popcorn they sell at Target; it's even good the next day if you put it in a zip lock bag overnight
7. wrist bands - they make wrist bands that put pressure on your pulse points; most maternity stores sell them; these are the same ones used for motion sickness.
8. accupuncture - provides great relief and doesn't hurt; feel free to email me if you have questions about it and/or would like a referral - I know of a couple of good accupuncturists in Dallas.
9. stay away from foods that smell funny or strong - strong smells, even if they're good smells tend to induce the vomit.
10. keep food and water with you at all times - you never know when you'll get delayed or distracted and if you can stick to your mini meal schedule regardless of where you are, it will be easier to fend off the vomiting.

Hope this helps. L.

What helped me was to keep a bag of cheerios by the bed. As soon as I woke up I ate them- before sitting up. Having food in my stomach before getting out of bed kept my stomach settled for a while. I just ate lttle snacks all day. Anytime I went to long without eating the nausea would return. Good Luck!

Hi L.. I've been pregnant 2 times and both times I was very sick. Early in my first pregnancy I was hospitalized because I became dehydrated. I couldn't keep anything down for days. If this "morning" sickness (craziest term I've ever heard!) is that severe, you need to discuss it with your doctor. I took a medication called Zofran. I think that is how you spell it. And it worked great. Very expensive though. My sister is pregnant right now and she tries to keep something on her stomach at all times. She feels quite puney but she's not throwing up constantly. I had a hard time because while I was nauseous I could not bring myself to eat anything. I tried ginger snaps...didn't work. Crackers...didn't work. Zofran...worked!! It is safe to take...my kids were very healthy. Hope you feel better soon!! I just saw that this was back in November when you posted this. Hopefully you are enjoying this pregnancy by now.

Zofran was the only thing that worked with me. My dr. is VERY conservative w/meds during preg., but still prescribed it to me, so I felt very safe taking it. Like you, I had a 2 year old to take care of when I was sick, and the Zofran was the only way I could do it!!

Good luck!!

Hnag in there, The joy of motherhood.. I had morning sickness for the 1st 6 months and with my second I had severe morning sickness throughout my entire pregnancy which caused me to dehydrate, you definitely should look into Zofran which helped me with the nausea.
I ended up only gaining 5 pounds until the end of my 7th month when I was hospitalized for dehydration and hypertension.

I had a beautiful baby boy (Karson Kristopher) 7 lbs 14 oz and 19 1/2 inches long:)

Just let your Dr know everything that has been going on with you, communication is the key to everything.

Good Luck!

Ask your doctor about Zofran. It's a prescription given mainly to cancer patients to curb the nausea of chemotheraphy but it also prescribed for extreme morning sickness. I know several women who have taken it, some during their entire pregnancies. You may be relieved to know that a great deal of morning sickness passes around the 12th week. Good luck, take care.

Meds have side effects and are not safe while pregnant. I had severe morning sickness with nausea and vomiting both but since I started taking No to morning sickness tea, my condition got much better and now I can eat and drink everything.

I tried everything & nothing helped, only Zofran. I did not care if we had to mortgage our house to afford it, I felt so bad, just kidding...but seriously I could not go a day without it. My boy is now 1 yr old and very healthy, smart too.
I still couldn't eat everything but always had something I could stand, like tomatoes, bagels, nuts & watermelons for liquid...you'll be okay, and so will you baby.

AAAhhh...this i can possibly help you with. For one, don't take any over the counter medications for nausea. Second, when you see your doctor you need to be sure to tell him or her about the nausea. When I was pregnant with my son I had the severe nausea to the point to where I couldn't eat, drink, or smell anything without getting nauseated. I went in to the doctor and found out I had what was called "Hyperemesis" or a.k.a..."Severe Morning Sickness". I had it the entire pregnancy. My doctor had me taking anti nausea antibiotics and pills for anemia that I later developed. I kept losing so much weight that he had me drinking the Boost Nutritional drinks to gain weight just so I could keep weight on and that was the only thing I could halfway keep down. Believe me it was rough and I was in the same position you are in in the beginning. I gained like 5 pounds in my 9th months when the morning sickness started to go away a little. It was insane! But definitely get it checked out because you have what it sounds like I had and it was unbearable. My son was healthy though when he was born....7lb 14oz...21in long. Don't ask me how that happened as little as i was. Hope that information helps.
