Morning Sickness - Kalamazoo, MI

Does anyone have any unique advice about fighting morning sickness that actually works? I am 71/2 weeks pregnant with my second child and was lucky enough to never have to deal with it the first time. I have yet to actually throw up but I am nauseous pretty much all the time. I can usually eat small meals and actually get some relief for an hour or so after I eat but then it comes right back. Is there anything I can do that might help or am I just stuck suffering?

What can I do next?

Thanks everyone for your many responses! It seems as though sucking on hard candies worked the best for me. Fortunately, now I'm at 11 weeks and my nausea seems to be subsiding, and I am VERY relieved. Now if I could just stop being so darn tired, LOL. Thanks again!

If you can get ahold of dried papaya(spelling?). It only take a little bit but works awesome. I used to live on the coast and they would sell it on the wharf usually to those going on a boat ride for the sea sickness but tons of pregnant women were always coming in groups buying bags full. So when I was pregnant my family shipped me some from the fruit stands in Cali. It works great!!!

I am 40 and Have two kids one 9, one 6. The best thing that amazingly worked for me was a chunk of ginger root. It looks like a plant bulb from the grocer/produce section. ask the produce person where to find fresh ginger root. Anyway all you do is when you are feeling nauseated slice the ginger root so the inside is exposed and hold it to your nose to take big sniffs of it. There is something therapeutic about the aroma that took the nausea right away. I used to keep it in my desk at work and would pull it out and smell it every chance I could when I felt sick. It beat trying all those teas and such. Gingerale worked ok too but nothing beat smelling fresh ginger root, because you don't have to ingest anything. Good luck.

I have a lot of sympathy for you ... I had the same constant nausea for many months during my pregnancy. Two things worked for me. First, I always carried a juice box of lemonade with me and took little sips every few minutes. This helped prevent blood sugar dips, which seemed to make the nausea worse. I also carried little baggies with a couple of potato chips in them. For some reason, plain, salted potato chips helped the most. These aren't the healthiest options ever, but I was seeing an acupuncturist at the time and she said "You need to do what you can to get through this so you can function." It usually does get better around 12 weeks or so ... hang in there!

I found that if I constantly kept something in my stomach, I felt a lot better. So every hour or so I'd have a few crackers, 1/2 cup yogurt, a few bites of chicken. Anything with protein made me feel better. And for some reason, potatoes. Any potato product - fries, baked, mashed - as long as it had just a tiny butter but nothing else. I also found lemonade helped. You can also by some lollipops at BabiesRUs that are made for morning sickness.

My morning sickness started around 7 weeks, got progressively worse and by 9 weeks, I was throwing up everyday. Then it just started getting better and by 12 weeks it was totally gone. And then food never tasted as good as it did in that second trimester! Luckily, I didn't have any morning sickness with my second child.

Congrats on the new baby! Hope your morning sickness goes away soon.

There are many things to try as you can see from the responses. I would contact your doc if you are going to use any medication OTC or not. I had hyperemisis (I actually would vomit 2 to 3 times an hour all day for months.) I had all the meds the doc could give me (zofran and such) and was on a constant IV. They thing that I found would ease it at all was Accupuncture. I would have tried anything, and did, but this worked somewhat for me. If it gets any worse talk to your doctor and he or she should be able to give you something.

Good Luck!

I was sick with both my boys. Just nausea though and the ONLY thing I found that worked for me was Jalapenos. Not the fresh kind, but the ones sliced in a jar.Every time I was sick I made a trip to Taco Bueno, had a nacho salad and piled on the jalapenos. It ALWAYS worked. My father said it helped his nausea during chemo as well. I know the last thing most people want to think of when they don't feel well is Spicy mexican food- BUT, I tell you it works- Even my Ex hubby would eat them with his acid reflux and they calmed his stomach. Hi, Angela!

I feel for you. I had terrible morning sickness from Week 7 - 23 with both of my kids. I highly recommend the sea-bands. They are the sea sickness bands that go around your wrists. I could see a noticeable difference when I took them off, so I pretty much wore them constantly. It's winter, so you shouldn't look too strange:)
Also, figure out what works for you. During my first pregnancy, I swore by animal crackers. During my second pregnancy, I ate donuts and sour patch fruit nonstop. It's only a few weeks at the beginning and it was so overwhelming, I didn't really care that it wasn't the healthiest foods. I also recommend the preggo-pops. They provided some relief. But definitely try the seabands. They're about $10 or something like that.
Good luck!

Peppermint is a natural nausea fighter. Strong mints, toothpastes, and even peppermint shampoo can help. Also, just smelling essential peppermint oil can also ease your stomach. I'm a doula, and use peppermint often as many of my clients feel nauseated during labor. I have seen it work wonders dozens of times. I am also a childbirth educator, and would love to teach you how music can help you during your pregnancy and delivery. I offer special discounts to Mamasource members as well. There are many remedies for nausea that may or may not work. Things that worked for me were peppermints, sniffing (smelling) a lemon, and ginger tea or ginger snaps. Also when in moderation coca cola has a stomach soothing affet due to the syrup. I think that you can actually buy coca cola syrup just for nausea. Also keeping a little something in your stomach at all times cuts down on the acid. I used all of these and really smelling a lemon worked! lol. Give them a try. Good luck.

Hi, Angela!

I too had horrible morning sickness all day long, during both of my pregnancies. In fact, I lost almost ten pounds during the first trimester with my first child. Some recommendations are to use peppermint essential oil and dab it on your neck and suck on some peppermint mints. Another is to drink ginger ale or ginger tea. Ginger is another good "natural" relief to nausea. Finally, munch on some saltines throughout the day and make sure you do not get dehydrated by pushing the fluids. Hopefully your nausea will subside in a couple more weeks. These were the tricks that got me through the day (and night) as a nurse in the Emergency room during my pregnancies. Best of luck!

I had morning sickness with my daughter. It was exactly like you described. In the beginning, I just felt sick to my stomache all the time. I didn't actually throw up. I found that Preggie Pops (they can be found at Motherhood Maternity, or Babies R Us) worked really well for me. They weren't the best tasting, but they would instantly get rid of the naucious feeling. I also would try to keep something in my stomach at all times. Weirdly, I found that french fries would make me feel better too.

Angela,

Everyone has given you really good advice so far...However, when I was pregnant known of these options helped AT ALL!! Finally my Mom told me to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as soon as I woke up in the morning. I thought she had to be joking, but they actually worked -- no morning sickness whatsoever as long as I ate the peanut butter and jelly!!! Its kind of different compared to these other "tried and true" methods but it worked for me. When I asked my doctor about it she said the reason these work is because you need the sugar (jelly) to raise your blood sugar level, but you also have to maintain it and that is what the protein (peanut butter) does. Hope this helps -- and let me know if it works!! :) Good luck in your pregnancy - how exciting!!

Also, make sure you don't take your vitamins without food and wait until later in the day, not mornings to take them. It's amazing that vitamins can make you feel icky.

I was told to keep a fresh lemon or lime on hand for when I felt nauseous, cut it and smell the fresh smell. It really worked for me. The nurse at my dr's office told me about it and she learned it at a forum they went to on morning sickness. You have an odor center in your brain and the citrus "cleanses the palate" of that odor center, so to speak. Anyway, worked like a charm for me, so I pass it on to anyone I know!! Sounds like lemon flavors work for some others too. Good luck and hope it passes soon!

YES! I used sea-bands very successfully. They look like sweat bands and have a 1/2 sphere that presses into the inside of your wrist. The concept is based on accu-pressure and the spot "two fingers" above the wrist joint is the pressure point to suppress nausea. They are most commonly purchased for motion sickness - air or water. Call around to pharmacys and ask if they have them. They aren't sold everywhere, but you will find them. Also, ginger can also be used to fight nausea - thus Ginger Ale; but you can also buy ginger tablets at a health food store.

Angela:

I was so sick with baby #1 that life was miserable. But I found that if I always kept food in my stomach and did not let my blood sugar drop then my day went better. Also, I see other moms have recommended B6 tablets. I took those (after buying a large bottle) and they made me so sick! So maybe find a friend and borrow 5 or 6 tablets, take them (with dr's approval of course) and see if they work. You can combine it with half a tablet of unisom, that worked for me. Or take the perscription that your dr might offer: phenergran. Take a half tablet before bed and it should help you the rest of the next day. It makes you VERY sleepy though. It works good if you take less than recommended. :D

I ate all the time, little munchies. Don't eat anything that is too heavy - think granola cereal or all bran - but things that are lighter. And instead of maybe a big bowl of cereal for breakfast, eat a half a muffin, eat the other half like a half-hour later, then an hour after that eat some crackers. Or eat three small bowls of cereal every hour. Seriously, just eat all the time and NEVER let your stomach get empty. My husband used to tease me because I kept boxes of crackers EVERYWHERE. At my desk, a couple in my purse (I got sick of the salteen, try the teddy grahams!), in the car, by my bed.

One more thing that worked for me: I changed my sleeping schedule. I found the earlier I woke up the sicker I was. My sister found the later she slept, the sicker she was. So try it until you find the right time. I know you already have a child but call a neighbor if you need a nap or sleep if he naps still. Sleep really helped me, even if I took an hour nap in the daytime. I also tried not to rush when I did anything because the stress of rushing made me a lot sicker. Just relax, take your day easy and tell your two year old, mommy needs a nap. :D

Hi Angela,

I distinctly remember morning sickness during my pregnancy with my twins. Saltines did nothing for me. The best advice I can give you would be to eat blander foods. The blander foods are easier to digest, hence easier on your stomach. Try to stay away from greasy and spicy foods. If saltines are not helping, try rice cakes. I found rice cakes to be very helpful. My choice was apple cinnamon. They aren't as h*** o* the stomach. Drinking peppermint tea or keeping peppermints handy helps also. Peppermints are used in hospitals for cancer patients who have nausea. I used to keep a handful in my pocket if I went anywhere. I hope this helps :).

I had the same thing with my last one. I was working so I'd keep crackers with me and snack on them throughout the day, have a small lunch, and then snacks again the rest of the day. Everything was bland foods that wouldn't cause heartburn. I had the problem of not being able to eat at least 2-3 hours before bedtime or I'd be up all night with heartburn/coughing and throwing up. A few crackers as soon as I was out of bed and a can of pop helped tremendously! I drank Coke because I couldn't stomach Sprite or 7-Up.

Good luck and hopefully it will only be for a short time and not the whole pregnancy. Congrats on your 2nd!

I was so sick with my 3rd. I lost 19 lbs. The only thing that worked was to take 1/2 a unisom each night before bed. It didn't totally solve the problem, but I could function. I got medications from my OB, but they made me extremely tired.

Angela -

I suffered through that with my first child and just got past the nausea part of my second pregnancy! Purely by accident/luck a few months ago I put a peppermint in mouth when I was feeling ill and by the time it was gone I felt much better. I've been using peppermints ever since - don't know if it would work for you, but it might be worth a try!

Congrats!

This sounds odd but I swear by it. It helped me with my horrible morning sickness. I got some motion sickness wrist bands. They look like little sweatbands with a plastic piece on them. You wear them on your wrist and the plastic piece goes on the inside of you wrist. They work by accupressure. I got mine at a drugstore. They really did help me!

I never had morning sickness with my first child either but with my other two pregnancies I did. Like you I never actually threw up I was just very nauseous. The only thing that worked for me was motion sickness bands. I swear by them. Within a matter of minutes I would feel lots better and most of the time the nausua would go away completly. You can find them at Walgreens or other drug stores I got mine online two pairs for $5. They look stupid but hey it's better then being nauseous! Good luck.

Definitely talk to your doctor. There are prescriptions they can give that help, but if you prefer not to take prescription stuff....there are still things to do. For me really sour lemonade (fresh) helped, just sipping all day. On really bad days though, my doctor said to take a Complete Vitamin B pill and half of a Unisom. It really does help, but just talk to your doctor about it so he at least knows you're taking them. Good luck and take care!

So sorry, you are going through it! I was there with my son the whole pregnancy. I was so bad that I ended up having what they call hyperemesis which is uncontrollable nausea. I couldn't keep a thing down the whole pregnancy. I ended up having a permanent IV put in so I could get my nutrition through IV. Anyway, we are currently trying for our second now and I'm preparing for the madness. I'm taking B6 and when I get a positive pregnancy test I will start the unisom. I would maybe talked to your doctor as someone else suggested for dosages or suggestions. Once everything starts my doctor has to prescribe me a prescription medication. Hang in there sweetie, it gets better for most!

I had morning sickness really badly with my last 3 babies, and it didn't end until their delivery, I actually lose weight during my pregnacies, but it wasn't until my last one that the doctor suggested I try taking one Unisom (the sleeping pills) at night and then as soon as I wake up to take a b-12 vitamin. I don't know why anyone had never told me about this before because I could actually function the next day, and he promised it was healthy for the baby. I was also worried about being "nocked out" and not hearing my other kids but that also wasn't an issue, they are VERY mild. The doctor explained that the Unisom has a form of benedrine(sp) in it and that is what helps it to work. Good luck I can so sympathise!!!!!!!!!

I went to my Doctor and he prescribed Promethazine tablets that are safe and help take away the nausea. They also make you tired so if you get them, make sure you take them around nap time or bedtime so you can take care of your 2 year old, or invest in a sitter to help you out. I was sick ALL the time with my second baby and lost 10 pounds before I finally got better.
Some other things that worked for me besides small frequent meals were potato chips and lemonade and with my 3rd baby I felt nauseated until I had a glass of regular Coca Cola-caffeine and all.
