Morning Sickness, Nausea

I just found out that I'm 6 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. With my first, I had terrible morning sickness (and afternoon, and evening), and it's now starting with this pregnancy. UGH! I haven't gotten sick to my stomach thus far, but I have that unsettled feeling in my stomach that just won't go away. I'm eating small meals throughout the day, and snacking on crackers and drinking water in between meals. I'm just wondering if there are tips that any of you have for making this nausea go away so I can feel a little better---especially since I go back to work next week! Thanks!

Hi, I'm also pregnant with my second child. My first pregnancy I had morning sickness all day long for the first 5 1/2 months. This time around I found something that works wonders! At bedtime, take 1/2 of a Unisom tablet and 1/2 of a B6 vitamin... I'm now 32 weeks along and haven't had any morning sickness since the first time I tried it! The combination of them is what does the trick... I tried them both seperately with my first pregnancy... the B6 made me even sicker and the Unisom helped a little but didn't take it completely away like the combo of the two does. I've been telling everyone I know about this, I wish I would've known the first time around!!

Hi Laura! I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum which is basically severe nausea and vomiting during the entire pregnancy. I used Sea Bands- a bracelet that pushes on the Ni Quan pressure point to relieve nausea. It didn't take away the nausea all together but it took the edge off and made it bearable.
The preggie pops worked for me for about a week. I also found that if I ate a carbohydrate before bed I felt I could get up in the morning.
I strongly discourage against Zofran unless you or your baby is in danger from your extreme weight loss. It is formulated for chemo patients and not recommended for pregnant women by the FDA.
I hope you feel better soon! I threw up all day and all night for almost the entire time. I know how draining it can be to always feel sick.

I too felt so gross like that. I practically lived off of Sprite and ginger ale for a few weeks. I ended up at urgent care for something else and the dr gave me something for the naseau. The pills really worked, but gave me a terrible headache the next day. If I felt horrible I would pop a few ginger pills. They are natural and safe and I buy mine at Cub Foods in their organic aisle. Also, I was told to take a unisom tablet at night and B12 vitamins during the day. I don't think the B12 worked for me, so I don't remember the dose, but it really worked for some friends. One friend said that protein really helped her out, so she would have a toast with peanut butter frequently. Good luck! I hope something helps! It is so terribe to feel yucky all day long!

For me, the only thing that helped was literally eating saltine crackers non-stop. Hard to do as a teacher but that's the only thing that helped me.

I puked quite a bit with this 2nd pregnancy and often, the queeziness would go away for a long period if I was able to just let it out. Puke and get it over with. Otherwise, it was like my stomach had that queezines in it for a long time. I actually found relief in throwing up.

With both of my children, I got morning sickness really bad.
The thing that really helped me, was ginger tea. Even small bits of raw ginger and a glass of water helped.
Ginger ale did NOT help. I think it was the carbonation.
Try ginger tea-good luck!

I had that too. And I know this sounds weird but orange juice and cinnamon grahm crackers. I found I was low on acid in my tummy so the orange juice helped a lot. I would just take small sips whenever I felt it and it would relieve the pain. It worked for me through two pregnancies. Hope that helps some.

I absolutely could not stand saltine crackers while I was pregnant (love them otherwise) so I ate Pringles w/ my first. It was the only thing that settled my stomach in the morning. Otherwise, the candied giner worked wonders for my other 2 pregnancies.

When I was pregnant with my first, I had terrible morning sickness, and threw up at least four times each morning.

What helped me immensely was drinking a room-temperature flat Coke. I sipped it very slowly over the morning, and by 1:00 I was able to eat a small lunch and keep it down. This didn't eliminate the vomiting, but decreased it quite a bit. It also got rid of the unsettled feeling in my stomach.

In addition to ginger - either raw, grated diffussed in water, in tea, or as soda (look for a natural ginger ale that uses real ginger - not the corn syrup stuff), I used a tiny dap of vicks vapor rub under each nostril to help with offending odors at work. Even though my desk was far from the kitchen, I could still smell every single meal being prepped there, and my co-workers perfume and cologne was so overwhelming, and office meetings where food was served...forget about it. The Vicks really helped with that. I'm sure there are other balm type things like from Burts Bees that might work just as well.

I know how you feel. I always took papaya pills from GNC. They didn't work 100% of the time but it was darn close. They are safe to take during pregnancy also and the taste isn't half bad. I think that you can take up to 8 a day, but I found that if I chewed about 2 or 3 at a time they worked wonders for me. Hope that helps and you get some relief soon

Peppermint Essential Oil. Ask your Doc. first, of course, but ONE drop on your tongue in the morning or first sign of nausea will keep it at bay for a few hours at least. Works on heartburn and indigestion too. Sometimes even the smell can help.

I totally understand how you are feeling!

We are pregnant with twins and just about to the end of the 1st trimester.

A friend of mind gave me some "gingeroot" capsules that someone had given her. They are from GNC. I called the doc and made sure they were ok to take as of course it said, "if pregnant or breastfeeding....". Anyways, the OB-GYN said it was fine to take them 1-2 times a day. 1 wasn't holding me the full 24 hours as I was also naseated overnight. This was a God send for me.

On my second round of morning sickness I did tons of research and found out that it is the hypoglycemic response to pregnancy that causes nausea.

To ward off nausea you have some options:

1. Eat a diet low in refined sugars (eliminating them is best). Refined sugar makes your blood sugar fluctuate, bringing on the nausea.

2. Eat more meat - especially pork and beef, which keep your blood sugar stable.

3. Avoid acidic foods like tomato sauce and juice.

4. ****EAT KALE**** Kale - a leafy green vegetable - is super high in folic acid and minerals, all of which calm the nervous system, the digestive system and help to regulate blood sugar. (A quick Kale recipe: saute garlic in olive oil, toss in kale and cook until tender (about 5 minutes), toss the kale, garlic and oil in with pasta and enjoy!)

5. Get Shiatsu as a form of bodywork (as opposed to massage). Shiatsu will help to keep your energy moving as opposed to bundled up in your digestive tract.

If you do all of these things you should feel quite a bit of relief. If I had known these things with my first I would have gained less weight and felt better - which is what happened with my second. When you eat enough meat, you are less hungry for the carbs and sugars that make you gain weight. The Kale helps with cravings and makes you feel great. The Shiatsu helps you to feel calm and well.

Good luck Laura ~ my thoughts are with you.

I had the afternoon-evening "morning sickness" as well. It was terrible, though I'm sure I don't have to tell you that. The only thing that seemed to help was lemonade. I drank at least a quart a day for the first four months. It was the only thing that would taste "clean and fresh" in the afternoon. Once I had some, I was able to work my way through a small meal. Congratulations and good luck!!!

I guess ginger work for a lot of people, but what worked for me was peppermints. It worked during pregnancy and still works even now when I get nausea or an unsettled stomach. I also ate a lot of small snacks consisting of saltine crackers throughout the day because I couldn't handle much else. Try the peppermints though- it was amazing for me.

I found that sucking on a mint really helped me. Any type of mint, breath-mint or candy worked wonders. The smell was just enough to block out any offending smells and my nurse-practitioner told me that the act of sucking relieved nausea. Also, the same nurse-practitioner recommended frozen coke. The coldness of the slushy drink worked wonders. I've forgotten exactly why it works, but remember how wonderful it worked.

The only thing that worked for me is to NEVER let myself get hungry. By that time it was too late and I was to nauseous to eat and then it just got worse. I would suggest always having crackers with you, granola, or something else that you can snack on throughout the day. Eat small meals, but eat frequently. If it is especially worse in the morning, keep crackers by your bedside. They don't have to be saltines either, whatever you dig. I like whole wheat Breton's crackers. Good Luck!!

Hi L.,
I know how that is. With my first I was extrememly sick. If I only threw up 7 times in the day I would consider it a good day! I lost alot of weight in the first trimester too. I tried drinking Vernor's but i really don't like ginger-ale to begin with. Very tart lemonaid worked a little bit. I also tried to eat windmill cookies...If I even get a whif of them now though I get a wave of nausea and it's been 7 years! The nurse told me to try Sea Bands but that didn't seem to work for me. You can the B vitamins also. My husband would mix up frozen strawberries in a vanilla Ensure in the morning before he went to work then again when he got home before dinner. There are alot of B vitamins in them and i think it did help me keep down a little bit of food for about an hour. Once I got to 14 weeks I wasn't getting sick as often during the day and I started sucking on smarties. I had started subbing again and the smarties were easy to keep in my pocket and pop in my mouth often through out the day. I also kept a pack of crackers next to my bed and would just slide my hand over and grab a few and eat them before i moved around or got out of bed in the morning. I did a little better with my second baby...didn't lose too much weight that first trimester:) Good luck to you and congratulations. It'll all be worth it:)
