I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second child and suffering from awful morning sickness for the last 4 weeks - all day. For the last 3 days I have been vomiting. Does anyone have any advice? I was sick for about a week with my first child and no vomiting. My husband is very sympathetic and doing everything he can to help, thankfully. Also the smell of everything is really overwhelming. I appreciate your responses. EP

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses! This week I feel much better and have some energy. As my husband remarked last night "I'm so glad you're back". I've tried many of your suggestions. The main thing for me has been to eat small, meals often and to drink seltzer with some prune juice. And saltines are my constant companion! Thank you again for sharing your own experiences. It's easy to lose sight of the whole purpose when one feels so wretched.

I had it too, until someone suggested taking the prenatal vitamin at night, before bedtime. It worked like a charm for me!

I was originally taking it early in the morning with my breakfast...

I had both girls too...
Hope you're feeling better...

Hi E.,
According to a holistic Dr. sickness occurs when you don't have the minerals needed in your system. Apparently the vitamin supplements you are taking don't give you all the nutrients. You might want to look into "green" supplements from the health food store, which are in powder form.

The best to you and your unborn.

i am 13 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and have been severely nauseated since my 6th week. it is debilitating.
there are prescription drugs you can take that are safe. ask your obgyn about zofran if it gets really bad. i have been on it for a month and a half and it has helped me.
also, acupuncture is something i am doing as well...it has helped! hey, when you're desperate...
having a supportive spouse is key.

See if your ob/gyn can prescribe you zofran - I swear by it and their is no harm to the baby by taking it. I was sooo sick for the first 16 weeks of my pregnancy - throwing up morning, noon and night - this was the only thing that helped. I have a sister in law who took zofran all nine months as her sickness never went away and her baby is perfectly healthy. This was a life saver for me - good luck!

FYI - I was seeing a perinatologist for other reasons and she happened to be pregnant - she told me she was taking zofran and had taken it with all 3 of her children. So if a perinatologist thinks it is safe enough for her children it made me very confident that it was fine for me and mine.

ugh, poor you. Morning sickness really is awful. I had it myself, but it did go away after 10 weeks so you might be almost done. Mind you, the more common time for it to go away seems to be 12 weeks, from what I've heard/read. Anyway, I wanted to mention a few things I found helpful: making sure your stomach is never empty (carb based snacks were the most helpful - crackers, bread, etc.), sea bands (wrist bands to prevent seasickness), ginger tea, mint gum, excersize - I'm sure the last thing you want to do is work out, but it really helped!
good luck!

Try eating some saltine crackers BEFORE getting out of bed in the morning. I found if I didn't get out of bed right away and ate 3 - 5 crackers I felt a little better. I lost 19 pounds the 1st 3 months from being sick (I had fat to lose if you don't you want to be really careful). I and my friends both all said that there was a time during the day that we could eat and not be sick. During that time eat a high protein and vitamin rich meal and during the sick times drink lots of water and snack on whatever you can keep down. This too shall pass and talk to your dr about it. Congratulations on the coming baby!!!! A.

I was also sick up until my 3rd month so hopefully you only have a week left. Anyway, everyone told me "eat crackers, saltines, etc." Yeah those came up with everything else. But one thing did help me- SOUR SKITTLES-- or any sour candy(but I likked sour skittles the best!) I don't know why but it helped and other mothers have told me the same helped them. Just remember- it will go away and you will feel much better soon. and if it's any consolation, they say morning sickness is the sign of a healthy baby because of some hormone you are producing which makes you feel sick. Congrats!!

E.-
Congratulations on the new baby! I'm due in three months with my first and I suffered with morning sickness (all day) until about 16 weeks. You need to find what works for you. For me, it was a lemon hard candy in the morning before I got out of bed. A lot of people mention ginger, but that just made me more nauseous. Constantly eating small portions definitely helped me. I would always feel worse when I waited too long to eat. I usually eat very healthy, but during those weeks of morning sickness I think it's important to just eat whatever you can. For me, fried chicken sandwiches or chicken strips were my most common dinners even though I would only eat grilled chicken in normal life! And I pretty much ate frozen pizza every day for lunch. I never wanted the fresh stuff, only the frozen kind! Also, during the day, a little cup of mango nectar helped soothe my nausea a little bit. Since you work full time, you probably can't take naps, but I found that laying down usually helped. At a restaurant, I always made sure they gave me a bread basket. Try to avoid places with smells that irritate you. Sometimes just loading the dishes into the dishwasher would send me running to the bathroom. That's when it becomes hubby's job to finish that load. And stay away from people that wear too much perfume/cologne.
Remember that it usually goes away by your second trimester. Good luck!

My morning sickness was awful from weeks 8-14. I vomited every day too. It sucks! I also had awful smell aversion. I found ice chips helped. I made sure to eat little snacks all day long - ginger snaps (anything ginger is supposed to help nausea), gold fish crackers were huge, saltines, weirdly enough oranges ( I think the citrusy smell helped). Get as much rest as you can and try to eat a lot of small meals. Find a scent that doesn't make you nauseous and keep it around to help get through those little trouble spots. Good luck E.!

Hi, Ester.

Are you currently taking a prenatal vitamin? If you are, you need to have the doctor change it. I went through seven or eight before we found one that would not make me sick. The doctor's gave me a chewable called "Natachew". It is milder on your stomach. It did not stop the vommiting entirely but it lessened it. You may also want to try decaf tea and saltine crackers. You need to keep something in your stomach, no matter how little. The morning sickness should stop within the next four weeks. I, unfortunately, had it for seven months. It isn't fun (especially trying to keep up with another child).

I hope you feel better.

Hi E.. Congratulations and I am sorry you're so sick! I haven't tried it myself but I understand that acupuncture can be quite effective for severe morning sickness. I was in contact with a practitioner in my area who said he has had good success treating it. I also found a publication from the World Health Organization summarizing the research on acupuncture which cited some studies that support its use. Some insurance companies might pitch in. Hope you feel better.

fyi there is some thoughts that girls give more morning sickness since its an overload of female hormones and such. i had sickness, and then horrible heartburn type thing where my stomach would actually feel like it was going to explode everyday increasingly worse at night. it was so bad i would cry and go to sleep 7pm everynight the entire time. both girls!

With my first I was vomiting 2 to 6 times a day for 12 weeks, then it slowed down a bit, but didn't stop until 26 weeks (which is unusual, it should stop by 20 weeks). To top it off, I had gestational diabetes. The good news is, it does get easier.

I lived on saltines and gatorade (to prevent dehydration). Try eating very small bites, very often. Try to keep something in your stomach. Also, drink as much water as you possibly can.

Good luck

I'd hate to tell you this, but a lot of times, no matter what you do, it just won't go away. I know this because I have a 6 month baby girl. I was sick for the entire first trimester. But here a few things that helped me. Eating pretzels, crackers and ginger snaps. (I had some everywhere I went. Even had a stash in the car.) Shwepps ginger ale and ginger tea. For some people the sea band braclets help. You can get them at Walmart. They are save because they use pressure points and don't administer any medicine. Also, you can try switching your pre-natal vitamins. That seemed to help me a little. Some make you more naseaus than others. Ask your Doctor. As for the smells, I know exactly what you mean, but I couldn't find anything that would help me with that. Just try to stay away from the smells that make you naseaus. Although that is hard to do at work or someone elses house. But let your Doctor know how sick you are and sometimes they can give you something that is safe for the baby, but that helps. Don't worry, the second trimester will be much much better. Good luck.

Hi ester,

i feel your pain. i am on my 3rd pregnancy and with all 3 had terrible morning sickness ( all day long) for the first 4 months. hopefully yours will not last that long. With my current pregnancy it was the worst it had ever been and then at 11 weeks I found out I was having twins.... which explained why the morning sickness was so much worse this time aroind. ( are you sure you are only having one???)

anyway, the only things that I found helpful is lots of carbs. eat bagels and toast and crackers etc..... and never let your stomach get totally empty. I would eat a little something every hour to 1 1/2 hours.... if I went too long without food it just got worse. you may also want to look into changing your prenatal vitimin. it could be making you sick as well.

best of luck to you and I hope you feel better soon.

My mom said she had morning sickness with me for 9 months, have no clue how she did it since I have an older sister. Try some crackers and ginger ale or ask your doctor if there is something else you can do. Thankfully I didn't have any morning sickness, if I felt queasy I ate, but couldn't cook cause the smell of it made me nauseous. Everyone is different and since you have another child, you are doing a lot of bending and lifting, so that doesn't help either.

Hi!
I am about 15 weeks pregnant and also got nauseas everyday starting at about 10 weeks. I stumbled upon a remedy that has worked pretty good for me! One day i made a big pitcher of ice water and squeezed a lemon in it. I then sliced up about 2-3 more lemons and put the slices in the pitcher with the water. It was a refreshing drink and after the 1st day of drinking it i realized that i hadnt been sick that day! i then read online that lemons are great for getting rid of nausea. i always keep a big pitcher in the fridge now!
Hope that helps!!

hi E., try this... keep saltines right by your bedside with some ginger ale. eat the saltines before you even sit up in the morning. after you eat some, sip some ginger ale, slow, to wash them down. eat some more. i know its hard because you probably wake up having to pee, but the key for me was to take some time and eat a bunch of them before sitting up at all. and drink some soymilk during the day, it really helped my nausea and especially my heartburn, a couple of glasses a day. i dont know what to tell you about the smells, i had that really bad too. any meat, anything frying, stale cigarette smell was awful, like if a smoker even walked past me. i couldnt even go to my parents house for a week because they were re-tarring the roof of the school a block away and i couldnt take the smell! ugh, i can still smell it! the good news is that this should all go away in around a month if not sooner. good luck, D.

The good news is that morning sickness is often correlated with a healthy pregnancy.
The bad news is that it sucks! I lived thru 16 weeks of it with all 3 of my kids. It helped me to learn loads about safe herbal remedies that work wonders.

GINGER is super effective. Slice the fresh root and add it to hot water, try ginger tea from the health food store ( Yogi tea, Traditional Medicinals are two great brands) Eat some pickled ginger from your local sushi joint. Ginger ale does NOT contain any ginger but does contain other things you want to stay away from- High Fructose Corn Syrup for one. If you hit the health food store, you'll find REAL ginger ale made with ginger. Also a product called ginger juice. For me, I went for the fresh root whenever possible. You'll find it in any asian market, whole foods and all the health food stores.

PEPPERMINT is another tasty and worthwhile quease reducer. Very cooling too. Make some peppermint iced tea. Your local Starbucks carries Tazo Tea- Refresh is the flavor to try. ( also find peppermint or spearmint teas by Yogi Tea and Traditional Medicinals )

Enjoy these teas/ herbs and remember that this quease is mother nature's way of keeping your unborn baby away from toxins.

Hi E.!

Congratulations on the pregnancy and SO sorry to hear you're feeling this way. I, too was so sick during my entire pregnancy, I couldn't even brush my teeth without vomiting.

Anyway, you're looking for help and I have to honestly say that one day it might be one thing that helps and the next it might be something else.

I had luck with Vitamin B6 for a little while,50mg 3x daily was what my doc said. When that stopped working, I tried ginger tea, ginger cookies (the real ones), pregnancy tea, homeopathy and eventually ended up with a prescription for Zofran. It's the drug they give to chemo patients to help with their nausea and I have to say, it works like a charm.

Best of Luck to you for a healthy and nausea-free pregnancy!

Hi E.,

It's just the worst, my heart goes out to you. For both my pregnancies I was horribly horribly sick every waking hour from week 7 until week 18.5. In the end there was nothing I could take that helped and I ended up underweight and unwell but I had wonderful 2nd and 3rd trimesters and now have two healthy wonderful children.

The only advice I would give you would be to try to get good food in you when you can....baked or mashed potatoes were great for me, also boiled eggs, vegetable soup and anything plain but nutritious like that. In the end I could only really eat once a day. It was worrying as I lost 18lbs in the first trimester but in the end both my babies were over 8lbs at birth so the starvation diet in the beginning certainly didn't do them any harm. My husband would come home from work and I would crawl up to bed and he would bring me my egg so that I could eat it and go straight to sleep to try to keep it down. I know this sounds horrible but I always found that I felt much better immediately after throwing up so that's when I would try to get the food in so that some nutrition would get into my body.

I really hope you feel much better soon, just try to keep telling yourself that this is all going to result in a wonderful bundle of joy and the sick feeling will end at some point!!

Best of luck
M.

You poor thing - so sorry!! Sounds like you have so much on your plate already and now you're sick!

If it's really bad and you can't keep anything down, you should call your OB or midwife. Sometimes they prescribe a medication that helps pretty quickly. And a lot of women can even go off it once they feel better.

Another option to ask your doctor about is the combo of B12 and Unisom. That is supposed to work wonders, too. Just be sure to ask the doctor cause is it all taken in very small amounts.

I was sick my whole pregnancy - but not sick enough to take any meds! I hope that you feel much better soon! Only a few more weeks and you should be feeling better!

I'm sorry you feel so crappy right now! I was very sick when I was pregnant with my son too, and unfortunately it's just a waiting game. The good news (though nothing feels good right now!) is that intense nausea is a sign of strong pregnancy hormones. My OB told me it meant the threat of a miscarriage was much less because of that!

But, of course, you're miserable right now. Here's what I did:

I ate 2-3 saltines and a small glass of gingerale before I got out of bed each morning. I then ate tiny, bland meals throughout the day. By keeping food in your stomach, you'll actually feel LESS sick! But I stuck with crackers, cereal, and mashed potatoes for a while. Nothing acidic or fried. I couldn't tolerate any veggies either. I also always took my prenatal vitamin at night before I fell asleep.

If you wake up in the middle of the night, have a small snack then as well. This way your stomach won't be empty in the morning.

I know it's not really "morning sickness," because you're sick all day! But try those tricks, and drink ginger tea throughout the day. (You can also make this by boiling water and then adding small pieces of ginger to your mug with the water.) Peppermint tea may help a little, too. I found ginger was the best, though!

Good luck, and try to think happy thoughts about your new baby!

This sounds just like I was. My first was a boy and I was only a little sick with him for my first trimester then nothing. Second was a girl, and I was throwing up, losing weight, and everything made me sick for the first 22 weeks. After that I could eat things, but still not everything. Maybe it's a girl! Hopefully things get better. For me, I had to start to take Zofran (an anti-nausea drug) which really helped for a while. Also, licking lemons helped, too. I had very bad morning sickness with both of my children. So bad that I ended up in the hospital several times for dehydration. My morning sickeness lasted from the begining og pregancy until the final birth of my children. I tried every remedy possible.

I was given Zofran pills and they helped. I ended up with a fusion pump with Zofran for a few months.

I would speak to your OB about the sickness, although they say morning sickness ends in the 1st trimester.

I used those sea-sickness bands (they have a pressure point bead that you put against your inner wrist) you can get them at the drugstore. They helped somewhat, though didn't take it away completely. I also drank a lot of seltzer, which made me feel better.
Good luck and congratulations (even though you feel cruddy!). The worst of the sickness should be over soon.
best,

Each pregnancy is different, hopefully by the second trimester you will feel a lot better. Unsalted saltines and seltzer water worked for me. I've also had the sensitivity to spell. You may want to walk with something to help block out spells that make you nauseous.
