Moms of Kids with Asperger

Would like to get in touch other moms that are in that have first-hand experience with mildly autistic children.

My Kindergardener is very likely an Asperger boy. I don't even know where to start in getting help and therapy for him in the Greeley area.

Advice?

What can I do next?

Have you had him diagnosed? I have a 10 year old who I feel shows signs too, but I have no idea where to start. I have tried to find someone in the Greeley area to no avail. All I have gotten is the run around. Any advice would really help me too.

Hi M.,
As stated previously, your son's school is required to provide equal education opportunities. You might want to get in touch with your local community centered board, which I believe is Envision http://www.envisionco.org/ They can assist with testing and helping you find resources such as service coordination with schools, therapies and respite support. Another place (probably the best place to start for information) is The ARC of Colorado http://www.thearcofco.org/resources.html You might also want to check out the CO Autism Society (a lot of resources are listed at the ARC's website).

Both my husband and son have aspergers. My husband does great and has no problems holding down a full time job and being a great father ( I know some parents unfamiliar with aspergers worry about that). The first step is to get an official diagnosis so you can work with your schools resources. You have gotten some great advice on this blog. I just wanted to let you know not to panic. My son is very happy and well adjusted. If you want first hand experience about my son or husband feel free to contact me.

hi M. i have a little guy with aspergers. your local public school is required to provide services for your son through the individuals with disabilities in education act(IDEA). kids birth to 3 go to an early intervention agency for help kids 3 and over get it through the school. learn about your rights through this act(like on google) and then go to your local special ed department for help. my boy is 3 and he gets free preschool and speech therapy through our local school. if you have any other specific questions drop me a note. i will be glad to help.

Hi, M.! I saw your post yesterday and contacted a friend of mine in San Diego for information for you. Tom has a close friendship with a couple whose young son is autistic.

Tom suggested you get an accurate diagnosis and expert intervention as quickly as you can. What his friends have learned is that intervention is most successful when started as early as possible. His friends, Robin & Frank, initially took Johnny to the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego--http://www.chsd.org. You may wish to contact someone there, who can give you referral information here in Colorado.

Next, Tom said that Robin & Frank make extensive use of a center called Brain Highways--http://www.brainhighways.com. It is a local program, but I noticed on the site that there is information for out-of-area parents. Again, they may be a good source of information for you.

Frank & Robin also stay in touch with an organization that helps them with specific therapies. Here is the web address: http://www.casefamily.com/

Lastly, Robin makes much use of a website called "Valeries List," which is a networking vehicle for parents and provides support and advice: http://www.valerieslist.com/val/index.asp

M., I hope that this information will be useful, and I will remember you and your son in my prayers.

All the best...T. N.

Hi M.,

I saw this last week and knew of a person that would have some answers for you. I just heard back from her yesterday afternoon. She is a case manager for the city. Let me know if you need any more information and best wishes to you and your son!!

Here are some options for your friend. Have her call Envision ###-###-#### and ask for the intake department. They will help her get connected with early intervention services. I am surprised that she is not already working with EI. It is very uncommon for Autism to be diagnosed prior to age 5, but there is a waiver program that supports children who are diagnosed. It is a great service. Envision case workers should be able to assist her. Also Asperger is pretty rare and many behaviors are similar to this syndrome, but are not actual Aspergers. Tell her there are some great supports available and with this help she will have some great options for her child.

Should she have trouble the case management director is Linda Medina and I work with her quite often. If she has trouble tell her to call Linda and that I say HI! (Marla)

Truly,
J.
