I have the Mirena IUD and have had so for 1-1/2 years. Personally I love it. Was uncomfortable and a little painful to have put in so take something before the appointment (tylenol or Ibuprofin). My cycles are short and light, sometimes not much more than just spotting. No emotional side effects. Overall I am very happy I have it.
Good luck.

Personally, I hated my Mirena, however, it didn't really hurt when it was put in (just a little cramping), and it didn't hurt when it came out either. Hope you enjoy yours!

I've had mine for about 7 months now and I love it. It did hurt a little bit, but I was expecting severe pain and it wasn't that bad.
I do like that I don't have to worry about taking pills every day.
I did have some spotting off and on for about a week after it was put in, but nothing since then.

It was the worst thing I have ever done. It screwed with my hormones really bad!! I was a raving b*&ch, my husband was getting tired of it, so I talked to my OB and at that point I told him I am so done with kids, he goes then lets fry the heck out of those tubes then. If you can handle a progesterone only hormone then you are good to go, if you can't handle it look at other options. After I got my tubes tied, I went on some acne medication that causes irregular periods and I was on Depo and that so screwed with my system, again it was a progesterone only hormone and my body just couldn't handle it.

I have had mine for about 3-4 years. It hurt a lot when it was inserted although it was quick. I wish someone had warned me so I knew what to expect and to take some ibuprofen or something in advance. I have irritable bowel syndrome though (IBS) so that is probably why it was so painful for me. I thought I was going to pass out. I've delivered two babies vaginally without an epidural so I don't think I have a low pain level tolerance; I think it really had a lot to do with my IBS. Anyhow, since then I've been pretty happy with it. The hormones don't bother me even though I can't tolerate other hormonal forms of BC. I had spotting the first few months but get very light periods if any since then. No problems with strings, etc. Good luck.

I had it after I had my daughter and I loved it! It takes some time for your body to adjust, it will mess with your period, you may not get one at all after while. I would get random spotting, but nothing much. I had it taken out to get pregnant and once I have this baby I am getting it put back in. Good Luck I hope you have as much luck with it as I did!

i had mine put in 6 weeks after having my second daughter. i cannot describe the pain i felt when i got it inserted. it was horrible. almost like being in labor again-like being dialted to a 10 with no pain meds. i had sharp shooting pains for the next 2 years that would almost drop me to the ground. i would get my period 2-3 times a month, and i had cystic acne on my chin. i finally went in to have it taken out and they couldn't find the strings. i had an ultrasound and they couldn't find it. i had a cat scan and they finally found it-behind my uterus. i had to have surgery to have it removed. i'm not telling you this to scare you but to let you know it doesn't work out wonderfully for everyone. i knew the risks going into it and thought oh that won't happen to me. well it did and i am so upset i ever bothered with it. not to mention the doctor and hospital bills for them to find it and surgically remove it. there are much better options for birth control out there. look into them and carefully consider each one before making such a major decision. i am on generic yaz and love it so far. good luck with whatever you choose!

I had mine inserted when I was about 12 weeks post-partum, about 9 months ago. I was DREADING it because I read questions like this on this listserv, where people were talking about how it was the worst pain they ever experienced, etc. But, it was nothing for me. I truly hardly felt a thing. I had some cramping for at least a month afterward, but nothing major. And, it's been just awesome. Just be prepared for the pain if that happens, but remember that it's totally worth it. Good luck!

Not over the moon about it but It does it's job. Its been about 1 yr and a half since I got mine. no babies.
When they put it in it did not hurt.
However I had pretty bad cramping for about a week after. Bleeding lasted for about a month after they put it in. (very Annoying)
I haven't really had a period, just some light spotting.
The strings bothered my husband during intercourse so they had to cut them waaaay down. ( so just be prepared if he mentions anything)
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the Mirena, but I am experiencing a complete loss of sexual desire. It might be due to the stressful times we are experiencing, but still i was pretty vavavoom to begin with even when times were hard, now nothing :/
I have heard it can interfear with this as well as cause some other problems.
I really like the idea of not having to take "the pill" everyday, but I'm thinking there are better ways to avoid having another baby until ready (like condoms...uck) Anyway i've been seriously contemplating removing mine lately...Good Luck! Hope you do better than I did!

I just had my second and last child in December and had an IUD put in on Tuesday. It did not hurt just a little cramping. Compared to child birth is was like getting pinched. I had it close to the beginning of my period and this period has been lighter than normal. I chose the non-hormonal 10 year option since I don't typically have heavy periods. I heard that the hormones in the Mirena can sometime cause negative side effects. So, so far so good for me. I like the freedom of not having to take pills every day for the next 10 years. :)

I have had two put in. The first one after my first child was born, then had it taken out to get pregnant with my second. Then decided to get another one. They are great. Different people act differently to them, but I have loved it. With the last one I didn't have a period for like 18 months. I have now had mine for about 6 months and my period is very lite. Before having babies I took the pill. And let me tell you in the years I took it I could probably count the times I actually forgot or took it late. But after having my first baby, I missed two pills in the first few months and thought about it real quick that I needed to do something that I didn't have to think about. This was it. Hope this helps.

I love mine!

I had some cramping the day it was put in. That was almost 5 years ago, so I don't remember too much after that! I still have a period every month, but it is VERY light & hardly any cramping & pain compared to what it was before. And it's done its job! lol I am awful at remembering to take pills, so the Mirena has been PERFECT for me!

I have to get a new one soon!

I've liked mine. I nursed while having it inserted which may have helped with the pain. I don't remeber it being particularly painful, but it was 4 years ago. The nurse suggested the breastfeeding though to help with insertion. I sort of noticed it at first but now don't at all. My experience is positive and I'll likely have a new one inserted when this runs out.
