Military ID

I have custody of my granddaughter. I have had her all of her life. She is going on 8. Her father is in the military and provides her insurance. He pays $295 a month child support. (We did not go through the courts).

My problem is my granddaughter's ID expired the first of July. I told her father in May that it was about to expire and I need a notorized form from him berfore I can take her to get a new ID. He has now been shipped out of state and I cannot get him to cooperate and send me the necessary paperwork. I am worried that if something should happen and I need to medical or dental care for her this could present a problem. I think I can contact his commanding officer regarding this, but I don't know how to find out who he is and how to contact him. I hope you ladies have some suggestions as to what I should do next.

What can I do next?

You can call his chain of command. If he is not following protocal they will take care of him and make him send that paper.

Contact the JAG office on base, call the base operator, ask for JAG or Legal. Then explain to them what is going on. Have his info ready, full name, rank, and social security number.
When working with military keep emotions out of it. Give them facts. "This is what I need, this is what he's done".

Once you get his unit, work with the OIC.

Good luck.

Contact the base. They may be able to assist you. Also contact Military One Source. They may also be able to help you. What branch of the military is he?

It would be his commanding officer, and then you'll get a lot of money too. What a bad guy he is! If you don't know who his commanding officer is, I'd go to the CO of the base. Go as high as you have to because it's your granddaughter that is the one in trouble here. Also call Tricare and let them know what's going on.

Hi B.-

Sorry to hear that your grand daughter's father is so irresponsible! My ex has not renewed the children's ID cards either (in spite of a court order)...But during a recent ER visit with one of the kids, I merely provided the tricare group # (in this case the ex's social) and my son showed up in their 'data' base...I also provided ex's personal info as 'responsible for payment' party.

I am not aware of any dental coverage as that was always a 'private' policy for dependents...(which ex has also failed to maintain!)

I wish you the best...and it certainly cannot hurt to contact his CO. My ex is retired...

Do you have a military address for this loser?? If you do...go to your local National Guard office or recruiting office and ask them for help in determining who to contact. Do you know what base/post he is going to be posted at ? If you do...it should be a relatively easy matter to contact the JAG ( Army Attorneys) office and ask for help. He HAS to provide for his dependant...the military is going to make sure of that. If you aren't comfortable contacting the military directly...go to your State Senator and present him/her with the documentation and ask for assistance. Don't wait...it will take a while to get this straightened out...and while you are at it I would be asking for a raise in child support...$295 a month is ridiculous...my husband payed $250 dollars a month in child support for his son and that was in 1970!!!!!!!
The military WILL force this man to do what is right for his child....all you have to do is ask them for help!!! And be persistant...
Good luck to you

I agree that getting anything for her would be trouble with an expired ID since you don't have one yourself. I always have to show ours when we seek treatment (my husband is active duty). Militaryonesource.com might be able to help you, but they've been less than helpful in the past if you ask me. I think JAG or Legal is the way to go. If you know where he is, then Google that base and call them-- as someone else said, either the base operator, or most of the time the number for Legal is posted on the base website. Also, though, you have the Joint Naval Air Station in Fort Worth you can go to also if you want face-to-face contact. Their website is: www.cnic.navy.mil/FortWorth/MilitaryServices/LegalService... and their phone # is ###-###-####. They offer services to all military members, regardless of branch. If phone calls to Military One Source or the JAG office on his base doesn't help you, it might be better if you made an appointment and had face to face contact with someone here. I always think that helps when working with the military. I would also ask them while you're there how to get more child support. That seems like a very low number!! Good luck and don't put up with this. Any service member should know better.

I realize it's been awhile since I've had to update my little brown card - but you should be able to take her on base before it expires and get it renewed - you should be able to go to Pass and ID with her current card AND HER.

You can contact the base operator as well and ask for the base commander or the JAG office and tell them your situation...they will ask you for his name, rank and SSN - all of which is on her granddaughter's ID card.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I cant answer your expired ID question but I would definatly suggest you ask for more support. When my husband got a divorce while in the marine corp he was told to pay like $500 in child support, but his ex in her one act of kindness, knew he was getting out of the military and agreed to take $350.00 for one kid. You should get more than $295.00 for sure.

Personally, before you go the jag route, is there a local rep for the wives that stay at home? I know a friend of mine is in the military and they have a support group at home that is just for this type of problem. The home based officer is a liason to the people who remain at home and is a resource for this type of problem. I know with my friend's group, they sent out a monthly newsletter, etc.

Good luck,
L.
