My youngest son has been potty trained for several months now. He stays dry at night and all day at school but lately he has started pooping in his pants when he is at home. I'm not sure what to do about it. He is 3 1/2 and h does not seem to care that it happens and laughs when he comes to tell me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

For the past few days he has been going to the potty every time. Hopefully this was just a phase and he will continue to stay on track. Thanks to everyone for the great advice.

G'Morning K., he's a little stinker for sure. So if he laughs make him wear his yucky underwear for a little while. Then make him change his cloths and clean himself up. I know easier said then done. Sounds harsh too, sometimes ya gotta do the hard time to get the results you want. When his little hinny starts hurting or itching from having dried poop stuck on his rear, he just might not think its so funny anymore. Worth a try any way if you can stand the aroma wafting out of his britches. ;)

One of our gr sons was doing this to a extent, he would hold it in so long, when he finally went he couldn't make it to the bathroom quick enough. Reason for holding it in was it would hurt.. WELL my words I guess it would. How a small child passes something That LARGE is beyond words.

Anyway K. give it a shot, maybe some other Awesome Mama's have a solution for you that isn't as smelly. :)

God Bless your family

My 3 1/2 year old son did the same thing a few weeks ago. I never figured out why he did it, but I just gently and calmly reminded him that he has to go on the toilet when he goes poop, not in his pants. I just tried to be very patient with him. I even told him I would hang out with him in the bathroom while he went and that seemed to help a little. Like I said, I'm not sure what the deal was, but eventually he told me he wanted to go alone and he stopped pooping in his pants.

He might be laughing because he's embarrassed... I agree with the other posts to stay calm and gently remind him that his business goes in the potty.

Skittles was the reward of choice in our house - I'd put a few in a clear jar and place it where he could see them, but not get to them. Just a subtle reminder of the reward that awaits once he is done.

Hang in there, it's most likely a phase. And please tell your husband thank you for his service to our country.

K.,
I know this sounds strange but he might be constipated. If they have a hard stool or a bad experience sometimes they hold the poop in. Then when their rectum gets full, they poop their pants. You can give him Miralax and schedule time after meals to sit on the toilet. You might check with your pediatrician. He can examine him by feeling his stomach and seeing if he is backed up.

I have lots of experience with this from my son and others who have had the same issue. The miralax will soften the stool and make it easier for him to go.

Do you have other children or have you become a little more busy recently? It may be an attention grabbing thing for him. Try doing a little something extra for him to be rewarded for staying 'dry' all day. Sticker charts, reading an extra book at bedtime...whatever you think he would respond to.
