So I've been learning more and more about how our everyday cosmetic products contain potentially carcinogenic and otherwise toxic chemicals. In the Johnson & Johnson Moisture care baby wash that was IN MY BATHROOM, I learned that it contains 1,4 dioxane byproducts...known carcinogen. Many J&J products (yes sold in the US) contain Quaternium-15, which is a preservative that kills bacteria by releasing formaldehyde. Many Aveeno products have sodium laureth sulfate in the ingredients, also a byproduct of 1,4 dioxane. Below is an excerpt from the Livestrong website.
Cancer
The website Healthy Child, Healthy World suggests that you may be exposed to 1,4-dioxane when using personal care products containing ethoxylated detergents, such as sodium laureth sulfate. These products include body wash, shampoo, bar soap, toothpaste and mouthwash. The agency also warns that 1,4-dioxane is moderately toxic if swallowed and is cited as a cancer risk by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Wow I'm starting to freak out about having bathed my babies in this garbage for years! :( I have switched to using only California Baby shampoo and baby wash - NO chemicals. But did I do damage from the years the babies took BUBBLE BATHS in this sh*t? I'm so sad and angry.
In any event, as I said, I've switched to natural-only soaps and lotions for them. I even got a cool recipe for bath wash that I'm going to try tonight. Does anyone else have a homemade baby wash and/or baby shampoo recipe?
Oatmeal Baby Wash:
1 cup whole oats
Blend in blender or food processor until powder. Sprinkle into bath water and swirl. Supposedly the baby's skin is ultra moisturized and soft after an oat bath. Please, please share your recipes if you have any!!

If I freaked out over EVERY LITTLE THING that my kids came into contact with, they'd be living in a bubble.
I grew up using all the basic stuff on grocery store shelves.... Once I became a parent, I felt like you! All the stuff we put on our children's body was alarming for me! I haven't ventured into making my own recipes but I do like to use www.EWG.org as a resource to educate myself on what products I'm good with having in our home:)
We use plain water. We haven't used baby bath, or baby lotion. If he gets really grimmy, I use some ivory soap on a washcloth, and that's about it.

While not homemade, but certainly made with love, we're particular to using Dr Bronners castile soap. They make an unscented baby mild, but we also like using the rose or lavender ones.
The only thing I can think of is to make your own products and that way you know what is in them.
It might take you a bit of time to research and perfect them but you will get the good benefits of the product without all the petro chemicals. Do make a journal up of what you find and then proceed with your products.
I mentioned the other day several sites to go to: magestic mountain sage, www.thesage.com, www.thesoapdish.com, and I believe www.mullersfarm.com. These sites have information and can give you ideas of batch sizes to make.
So while you are freaking out get rid of any mineral oil you have in the ouse (baby oil) as this is a petro chemical product.
