Like most everyone else (because I don't have a toddler living in my house!), I use warm water and gentle soap. Then I rinse them, lay them on a towel, and let them air dry. When they won't clean well, or when the bristles insist on going every which way, it's time to retire them and get some others.

I wash them once a week with gentle soap. I just cup my left hand and put a little soap in it, then hold the brush with my right and swish it in my soapy hand, then rinse the brush in running water. I repeat those steps until the water runs clear. I also use an eyebrow brush and do the same with that little brush because if I don't then when I brush my eyebrows it leaves little clumps of old makeup gunked with powder on them - really not attractive!
Then I just shake as much water off by flicking them above the sink. After that I wipe them with a dry tissue and stand them up in a cup to dry for the day. When I get home from work they are like new. I do like Yolanda's response and must admit that there are quite a few cheaper make up brushed with my kids' toys, but now I bought a powder and blush brush at my hair dresser that are quite nice, so I am treating to last.

Warm soapy water.
Blot then air dry so the bristles don't get smashed or bent out of shape.

With shampoo. Just run them under the water (bristles down), put a little shampoo in your other hand, swirl the brush in the shampoo, and then rinse (keeping the bristles down). Then give it a good shake, and lay it over the edge of the sink to air dry.

They sell special cleansers for just that purpose but I am not fond of the prices...I use the baby Aveeno bath stuff...warm water and air dry...works so far.

Mac Brush cleaner -$15 or get some Johnson's and Johnson's baby shampoo,
1.add a little water and just a little bit of the shampoo in a saucer. Wet a few layers of bath tissue in the saucer and set flat on the counter.
2.Keep some dry tissue next to it.
3. wipe brushes on wet tissue then on the dry until clean..

repeat until all brushes are clean

leave them flat on the counter to dry.

NEVER DUNK YOUR BRUSHES IN WATER OR SOAK THEM - the glue that holds the hairs together will disintegrate. Rather wipe the brush on the wet towel, then on the dry to get off all the excess makeup

I like to use my makeup remover but you can with a cleansing soap, or shampoo. Then rinse really good to make sure its soft and clean then lay out to air dry. Using a towel to dry will fray the bristles.

With spray-on make-up brush cleaner. Then a rinse and air dry. It may be more expensive, but I don't wear make-up very often, so I'm still on my first bottle I ever bought...

I use cetaphil gental cleanser. Wet brush with warm water gently scrub bristles in a downward motion, then rinse really well. After that I let it air dry. I do it once a week other wise it gets all gunky.

Use whatever you use to wash your face in warm water then air dry.

I use Eyes Lips Face (ELF) brush shampoo $3.00 at Target. You should clean them weekly at least to prevent bacteria build up and spread. As well you can and should spray alcohol on your eye liner (esp if you line the waterline) and let air dry frequently too.

There are two ways to do it. If you wnt to sterilize them for other's use, you must buy a brush cleaner with some alcohol at a beqauty supply store. I've found a blue cleaner for under $6 at Sally's. If they are for personal use, mild soapy warm water and rinse clean until water is clear. When a wooden handled brush is wet, rest it on its side to dry. Otherwise the wood will warp. :-) I know because I deal with this daily as a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant.

The professional make-up artist who did my makeup for my wedding said the best thing is just Johnsons baby shampoo! Use lukewarm water and rinse well. Air dry. Works like a charm....

Great question! I had my make-up done at Ulta, not sure if you have one out there, anyways I seen her spray the brushe's with some sort of solution...But I have done the gentle soap and water, just make sure you lay them flat to dry so that the bristles don't look all funky! I have even set them near an open window so that they can dry faster. But then again, I have gone through soo many expensive make-up brushe's , thank's to my adorable 3 year old :)...I recently purchased the Sonia Kashuk brushe's from Target and they are awesome! They are easy to clean and dry quick! The best part was that I purchased the whole set clearanced for $20! That was a steal! lol..
