My friend and I are having a Luau-themed party/bbq, We are having some issues coming up with food ideas. We don't really want to spend the whole day grilling, we were kind of thinking of things that could be served room temperature or taking out of the oven and let sit for as little bit while people eat. Also there will be 10-12 kids there of various ages and quite a few picky eaters. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank You

If you go with something like ham, you could make a nice pineapple salsa to go with it. It would dress it up a bit and still keep with an luau/island - y theme.

I agree with the fruit salad or fruit kebobs. That's something everyone enjoys even the kids. What about ribs? You can grill them early in the day or even the night before, cut them up into individual portions, slather with BBQ sauce and then keep them warm or warm them up in the oven. I've done them like this and it works great.

If it's very hot, be careful about leaving pasta or potato salads out that have mayo. You could do an Asian-inspired slaw with a sesame-ginger dressing. I think I saw a good recipe at tasteofhome.com. Have fun!

I made fruit cabobs for our luau, for the kiddos...yet all the adults ate them. A neighbor even found gummi fruit cabobs at the market. A litttle bit of prep work, but just an idea. It seems as if you have recieved GREAt suggestions thus far. Hope it goes well!

D.,
This is SO good and VERY easy...put beef or pork roast(s) in crock pot(s). Top with a bottle of BBQ sauce (or homemade BBQ sauce) mixed with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of apricot preserves. Cook on high 5-6 hours. Shred with 2 forks and serve with buns for BBQ beef (or pork) sandwiches. Very yummy on the yellow egg knot buns. Can do ahead & transfer into a large aluminum pan(s) to warm in oven then put on a rack w/a heater. I'd just add a tossed green salad (make day before) & desserts. For the picky eaters, why not throw a few dogs on the grill or pick up a big Subway sandwich? Hope you have a great luau!

Sea-Pak makes an awesome Coconut Shrimp. You just bake it in the oven and serve with a marmalade sauce they provide. I found a huge size of this a Costco last year but local supermarkets should carry it also-albeit in a smaller box. Maybe not what you want to serve if only kids at party.

Also -there is a good desert my mom used to make with pinapple and marhsmallow and some kind of jello. Maybe google that kind of thing for a recipe.

At Our luau party we served ham. It can be served hot or cold, but then have fresh fruit and some salads or chips. A whole pineapple as a centerpiece is fun, too.
