Hi- I should have this down pat by now, as this is my third child, but I am at a loss for this birthday- my other two kids are still small- one just turned 5, and the other is almost 3- so the simpler the better. I basically just want a simple, cute little party for my son, so he can look back on the pictures one day and know I did something special for his bday, just like I did for his siblings. The Dollar Tree has all the supplies you need as far as plates, cutlery, napkins and decorations and you can get cupcakes 12 minis or 6 regular sized for $2.50 and they have cute plain white with sprinkle smash cakes for $4. I'd also pick up waters and sodas for the adults and some juice boxes but you literally could get away with something for under $20-$30. Start at the Dollar Tree...and good luck!
My daughter's 1st birthday party was just family and close friends. We did dinner. You could even make it pot luck so you don't have as much prep work. Then if you throw in a few party hats, a happy birthday sign (which you could make with poster board and let the siblings decorate), and a cake you've got a great party. And who's going to love seeing your little one smash his face in the cake more than those closest to you. Just remember, no matter what you do your son will know he is loved because you made the effort. That's more than some parents do even for their second child. Good Luck and enjoy his birthday!
For our son's summer birthday we had a "Fun in the Sun" themed party. Invitations were drawn on a cheap blown-up beach ball with a permanent marker; then deflated and mailed out. Set out a wading pool(s), chalk, & bubbles. When htere is water involved the kids will make their own fun. so the bigger kids had something more to do we had a make your own smoothie bar (my husband was on hand to man the blender). snacks included cut out pb&j's, goldfish (keeping with the "beachy" theme),etc. Party favors were plastic beach pails filled w/ bubbles, candy, etc.
All was very stress-free because it was do ahead stuff.

When my oldest son turned one, we had a "baby pool" party. We set up 3 baby pools in the back yard and had his friends come over. They ran from pool to pool, just splashing in the water. They had a great time and it was absolutely no muss or fuss.

I have to agree with starting at the dollar tree for supplies/decorations. But also, most parks that have a pavillion can be reserved at no cost. Just contact your local parks and recreation deptartment to reserve it. Then have cake or cupcakes for the attendees and the kids can play at the park and playground. Then your cleanup is minimal! We are thinking of doing this for our daughters 2 year party "Picnic in the Park" in september. Get the other kids involved in making signs and/or decorations though. They will feel special for you letting them do so! Also ask them for fun ideas! Have fun!

My little one will be turning one in October. I've been thinking of doing a "sustainability" themed party (I know, sounds really exciting, eh?) but with the idea that she's been here for a year and let's keep this world a place for her to keep growing in for many years to come. My idea is that no one can bring a new gift, essentially it will be a toy/clothes/book swap. Everyone will bring toys that their kids aren't into anymore, clothes they've outgrown, and old books. Then everyone at the party can leave with some new things for their little ones as well. I haven't gotten to the real planning stage, so haven't thought through invitations or food, but I would probably do an evite to once again avoid waste that will just be thrown out. I figure there's no reason to go overboard and create a cycle of having to out-do yourself each year. Plus, they're only one... Just my two cents. Hope it's helpful!
