Looking for Must Have Books for Toddler

I am very lucky in that all my children have a natural born love of being read to ( I am a reader myself) and the older ones now will read almost anything they can get thier hands on. I am looking for new books to mix up our reading routine, currently my little guys favorites are any of the Eric Carle books ( Brown bear brown bear etc) the Sarah Boynton books and also Chugga Chugga Choo Choo by Kevin Lewis.
We Have all the typical sing a long style books you could name...I lean towards the books that have the rhymed text and are bright and colorful, because those are fun to read ( especially when you are asked to read the same book many times in a row) so I am hoping that some of you mommies have some lesser known favorites that are must haves to add to our library.
Thanks in advance!
B.

Can You Hop? don't remember the author.

My kids in my toddler classroom loved this book. We did a whole theme on it for weeks since they were so interested. There is lots of repetition and they love hearing it over and over. They can also do some actions with the book if you show them how (stomping, flapping their arms, etc).

My little girl (who will be 2 in May 2009) very much enjoys any Boynton books. Also, a recent favorite of hers is "We're Going on a Bear Hunt". Can't remember right now who the author is but we got it at B&N.

If you haven't before, try to find an Usborne book seller. I hosted a party when my second child was a toddler and we love the books. They have everything from feel and learns to easy readers to pre-teen educational books and everything in between. My kids favorite right now is the Farmyard Tales with two characters named Poppy and Sam. They have a website www.usbornebooks.com. Happy reading!

If You Were My Bunny by Kate McMullan and Hiccupotamus by Aaron Zenz are our household favorites for the moment. Both are great fun to read. Do you receive books from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library? If not I highly recommend it. Children under the age of 5 receive 1 book a month totally free. They come in the mailbox and they're nice quslity books. This would keep your library refreshed. I think I got my application at the Dr's office but you could probably find something online.

Potty Poo Poo Wee Wee by Colin McNaughton is a favorite of our boys even after potty training! The Grumpy Morning by Darcia Labrosse is another good book. My youngest also loves Piggies by Don and Audrey Wood. Any of the other suggestions by the other posters are great too! You can never have too many books in my opinion! My philosophy is when you have too many books for your bookshelf, build another one! Good luck!

I love the Dr. Seuss books. Maybe he'd like "Ten Apples Up on Top", "Are You My Mother" (By Eastman?) "Mr. Brown Can Moo" has great sounds for a two year old to mimic. "Cat in the Hat" and several others seemed a little long until my kids were a little older.

I'm a big fun of "I love you, Stinky Face"! "There is a Wocket in My Pocket" and "Green Eggs and Ham" are must haves by Dr. Suess. Have you read "No, David"? Very good and a VERY easy read:o) I can't think of his last name that wrote it..David something.

I carry MANY wonderful books as well! "Goose on the Loose", "Toad Makes a Road", "Big Pig on a Dig", "Who's Making that Noise?", "Who's making that smell?", "Who's making that Mess?", "How Big is a Million?"

Too many to name!

Please go to my online catalog:
www.ubah.com/W2474

I have over 1,300 books to choose from and 75% are less than $10 :o) There are diffierent ways that you can get your books for free, if you are interested!

Let me know how I can help further,

My girls love the Biscuit books. I don't know the Author, but we started with Bedtime for Biscuit, and Bathtime for Biscuit. Buscuit is a puppy, and his owner a little girl is telling him things to do and of course he is being a difficult puppy. This is one the kids memorize easily, soon they are reading it to you.

Mem Fox books.
My son loves Where is the Green Sheep

He is also addicted to picture books with just objects such as a page with different types of clothing and another with different types of animals. I think it is because we interact more and I ask him to point to different things and he likes to try to say the words.

We are big readers in our family too- I would STRONGLY recommend ALL of the Skippyjon Jones books by Judy Schachner (there are at least 4 picture books, a few board books and some pop up and sticker books too)! All Dr. Suess books, "Leonardo the Terrible Monster" by Mo Willems, "Go To Sleep Russell the Sheep" by Rob Scotton, "Fletcher and the Falling Leaves" by Julia Rawlinson, "The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone" by Timothy Basil Ering. A little less traditional to most people, we read a lot of poems by Shel Silverstein too- "Where the Sidewalk Ends", "A Light in the Attic" and many others. My son is 2 1/2 years old and LOVES these books! My 6 month old gets a kick out of watching his older brother laughing from these books :) You can get them at Borders, Barnes and Noble, On-line... all pretty available! Have fun!

"chicka chicka abc" is fun, although short - but i bounce my son up and down on my knee whenever it gets to the "chicka chicka BOOM BOOM" part and he loves it. also LOVE LOVE LOVE "the monster at the end of this book", it's a little golden book with grover from sesame street. my mom read it to me as a kid and did this wierd pseudo-grover voice, anyway i do the same thing and my son loves it too. there's "where the wild things are" but your son might not be quite old enough for that, my two year old will barely sit still for it. just some ideas, some of the ones our family likes :) good for you for encouraging reading in your kiddos. sounds like you're doing a great job.

My boys both love Jane Yolen's books, the How Does a Dinosaur books. There is How Does A Dinosaur Say Goodnight, How Does a Dino. Go to School, or Get Well Soon, or Eat their Food, Count To Ten, Pick up their room and I am sure I am missing some. They both really love these books. Also the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom books they really like. There is also 3 books by Ted Arnold cald Parts, More Parts and Even More Parts. These are about a little boy who doesn't quite get why certain things are happening to him. Like in the first one he finds fuzz in his belly button and thinks his stuffing is coming out, stuff like that. They are really cute books.
