Looking for Kid Friendly Hair Salon?

I initially took my son to Cool Cuts for Kids after he was about 10 months old until he started getting scared of sitting in the fancy cars, etc. We then found a stylist named Rhonda that was renting a booth out of a regular salon, but brought with her a TV with kids movies for them to watch. Well, my dillemma is that she no longer is working there because she has an office type job. I honestly just want to take him to a place where he can be distracted by a video because that really seems to help. I also want someone who is good with kids. If I have to, I will try Cool Cuts again. I saw some earlier posts where people recommended Short Cuts at International Mall. I wasn't sure if I needed an appt to go there. I would hate to drive all that way and not be able to get his hair cut. If anyone has been to both, do you like one over the other? We are going on vacation soon and I want to be able to get his hair cut before we leave. Thanks for any recommendations:)!

What can I do next?

Hi Carla,
I also had the same delimma. My 2nd son was terrified at his first hair cut and he was almost 2 years old. (Yes he had a fro do for a while). At the great clips on Bruce B Downs near the Super Walmart there is this gentle man who cut my son's hair that was very gentle.

There is also Sports Clips near the Sam's. Call them to see if they have children's videos or shows...I know they have TVs there.

If you go to cool cuts ask for Crystal she is the manager their and she also cuts hair. They also have just normal chairs to that they can watch movies to. She does the best work there. If you get there club card which is free and give them your email I get coupons all the time. I may even have one I can email to you if needed.

Funny thing is we always used Rhonda too! Really liked her. Now I take them to Nessa at Ultracuts behind Coldstone on BB Downs or Monica at Salon behind Walgreens on BBDowns and County Line - ###-###-####. Good luck!

Why don't you just go into Walmart and buy a pair of clippers with the different connections. You can cut his hair yourself. It's really easy. Have been cutting hubbys for a long time now.

I am not sure where you live, but there is a little salon in Land O Lakes called Salon at the Lakes. Rita, the owner, is really good. However, it isn't meant for kids and it is a little shack. Rita has actually sat on the floor to cut my childrens hair because they didn't want to sit in the chair. She even went out and bought a child size lawn chair so that they could graduate from the floor to the chair and now they sit in the big chair. She is GREAT. If you have a portable DVD player you could take it with you and put it in his lap - she wouldn't care. I think she charges $10 to $13 - not exactly sure because I have to pay for two and then tip. I think I give her $26 - which would make since if it was $10 per cut.

Anyway - I have managed a Salon before and my mom is a hair stylist, so I know this much - you have to find someone the child is comfortable with and someone that is comfortable with kids. Just because a stylist works in a kids salon doesn't mean they really like kids - it is just a job and the parents usually tip well because of the situation. So, my advise to you - find someone you think your son will like.

Good luck!

My hairdresser is good with my daughter, who works at Fantastic Sams on Ehrlich. But not Video. Do you have a protable DVD player? Has your child see you & your husband get hair cuts?

I think one reason my daughter (21 mo), is fine with the hair cuts etx is she has seen my huband & I get our hair cut since she was an infant. We will often hold her on our lap while we get our hair cut. She has had her hair trimmed like 3-4 times already (mainly the bangs).

Just some ideas.

I've used Short Cuts at International twice now. Everything was great except the wait. I called and they told me to just walk-in. We had to wait 20 minutes before being seen. they have a few things for the waiting kids to do but really? Waiting with a toddler is liking getting a tooth pulled.
