Looking for a Hat That Will Stay on a Baby

I gave up on the hats. I have been using the spray sunscreen and spraying her head. This works well for me. Then I still try to put a hat over it, but if she pulls it out it stresses me out less. I have a history of skin cancer so sunscreen is a biggie for me. :)

Hi, I'm a mom of a redhead toddler who is resistant to hats. What I did was starting in Feb, every single time we went outside, we wore hats. I just trained him "when we're outside, we wear a hat." One time only he kept ripping it off and it was getting to be a struggle. I said, honey, to be outside that hat needs to stay on your head. If you take it off, we have to go inside. Since he loves to be outside, it only took that one time of going in, while explaining, you need a hat on your head to be safe and healthy. After 5 or so minutes, I asked him if he wanted another chance to show me he could keep the hat on, and we went out. It's been basically fine since. So, I think the big thing is consistency, keeping the expectation there, and being loving and patient. At one, he's a perfect age for starting habits. Just get a hat w/a velcro under the chin, Maybe you need to sew some extra tough velcro so he can't pull it off, and then distract, distract, distract. Good luck!

not going to happen just slather him in sun screen. he might keep a ball cap on if you take him shopping for it .
my grandson would not keep a hat on. he is near 7 and likes hats especially pirate or cowboy. there are the bandana hats that tie in the back motrcyclists wear them but they are also made for kids.

I am a mom of three and I like the sun hats from Hanna Andderson, they have long straps for under the chin and a good brim. The more you put it on the more likely will keep them on. The hats last a really long time because they are a great quality. Try their outlet store in Woodinville or their other store at U village.

I think the more we put hats on my daughter, the more she leaves them on. Her very blond and fine hair is too long for regular sunblock all over her head, but I've seen lots of moms use spray sunscreen to keep the scalp from burning.

Super glue. It was designed for bonding to skin.

Okay. Seriously now, you're looking for a kind that ties under the chin. The problem you MAY find, is that your son is serious about not wearing hats. If this is the case, what you are going to have is a screaming, fit throwing, red faced little boy who would rather choke himself with the string then wear a hat. Can you tell we did that? Oy.

If that turns out to be the case, you have two options: Cross your eyes and bear it until he cries himself out and gives up... or: Use sunscreen.

We use the really expensive spray kind from city peoples, because my husband is a redhead. (Hmmm...what option did we go with?) No rubbing. Just mist, air dry (about 3 seconds), and go. SPF 50. On hair and everything.

Of course, the very next year our son wanted to be "like daddy". So as long as daddy wore a hat, he would, too.

Sigh. Oh well.

My daughter prefers a bandana to a hat - might want to give that a try.

I inally have my little ones traied to longer take her hat off, but Gymboree has great hats and they all seem to have a strap that goes under the chin with a big velcro piece, about 3 inches, and that works great! When she starts to take her hat off I kinda make a game out of it and tell her no no we leave our pretty hat on, she now gets it and leaves it on for the most part and I just lather her head everytime we go outside! Just makes for a lot of baths! Good Luck!

I have a very fair skinned little girl that had to have hats on when she was little - we lived in very hot Sonoma, CA. I remember the day that we played hat on - hat off all day - but I was calm and consistent and kept putting it back on without fuss, telling her she HAD to wear it - she was in a stroller at an outdoor mall. She eventually quit taking it off and from that day forward, I could put a hat on her and she would leave it on with little to no fuss. I did find some hat that had straps, but for the most part it was just sun hats that had wide brims.

At the Children's Place they have cute hats for Boys that snap under the chin. They look like baseball caps. My son is 8 months old and I try to make sure and put it on everytime we go out. He hates it and fights with the hat but it never comes off. Love it! Also Target has some hats for little ones, the fisherman style. They also have the snaps under the chin.
