Hi Moms - hopefully we'll be moving from our home to an apartment. It's a 3 bedroom home, not sure where we'll end up. We need to watch the budget, and may have some time to do it over a few weekends. I looked at uhaul and the 20ft truck is $95 per day and only 55 miles are included - one trip, I guess?

Has anyone done a local move, and what was the must budget and sanity effective thing you did?

I'm willing to move the light stuff, boxes, etc. over time if we can, with our car, and maybe see if friends could help for pizza :) The big heavy stuff I think would be nice to have movers take care of it - keep the "paid" work to a minimum.

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have found local moves much harder than across the country moves. We rented a uhaul and had a bunch of friends come over. Took all day!We never paid for movers to come and move the big stuff out. We did it ourselves much cheaper that way! We have done local moves a couple of times!

I much prefer the company paid moves!!! =)

When we moved from Ft. Worth to Arlington, we were BROKE! We had a truck at the time and moved everything in it! Took about 10 trips with friends and family helping. It was a pain.

When we moved from Arlington to a better place in Arlington, (10 minute trip), we rented a U-haul. Took 3 trips with the biggest one and it only cost us about $80 plus gas. Totally worth it! We had 3 of my husband's friends help us and we bought them beer and tacos. Lol.

We had a local move and spent $900 with Mayflower. They did the heaviest items, we did a lot of the smaller things on our own. It was less than 3 miles away.

Just a thought.... since we no longer have a minivan (never thought I'd miss that thing), it is a tough go at Home Depot when we need some major items. We don't put mulch, etc in our lux cars. We rent the Home Depot truck for as little as $20 a day but I don't recall mileage. We put less than 25 miles on it because we are just five minutes or less away.

We are horrible at moving within a budget. We spent $1300 on movers when we moved from Arlington to Mansfield, and that was 12 years ago. The others answering this questions seem to be much better at moving that we are. If we ever move again, I will definitely be asking for advice first! ;)

Good luck with your move, and welcome to the area!
