Hi Moms,
Cody will be 1 year next month. His diet is: bananas, ice cream (very little), yogurt, pureed prunes (#2's), graham crackers, cheese, lil crunchies, crackers and cheerios. He does drink the water/juice combo and formula/milk combo. He gags on everything else! We tried the graduates and he gags. He eats very small amounts of finger foods like chicken, grilled cheese, pb&j (no allergy) and just about everything we have (people food) (within toddler reason). He is very active, and healthy. He has his 1 yr check in Feb but I do worry. I know, I probably should not but hey, I am a Mom. Any suggestions?? And has anyone else gone thru this? How long will he keep on gagging? Thanks all and Happy New Year!

What can I do next?

DOes he have many of his teeth yet? HE may not be ready for the other foods until he has more. BE patient - he'll work in more foods as he gets older - no need to rush it.

Ask your ped doctor...he might have a picky issues OR it could be a sensory thing such as texture in his mouth he dosn't care for.
Try yogart, cheese, scrambled egss...soft food. My boy had/has a poor appetite but slowly he's trying stuff, may not like it BUT trys.

ask your ped if you can come in just for a weight check; ask them to plot his weight on the weight/age chart. if he is still on his curve, don't worry.

My little man will be two soon and I worried at first about his eating- he gagged in the beginning when I introduced solid foods just as your little fellow is. He got over it though and now eats just fine, but is still rather picky. Believe it or not he loved those puffs and still does when he gets congested or sick- they melt quickly. Umm- let's see- try some applesause- the real kind, not baby food. My son loves the Healthy Harvest Bluberry and Country Berry variety. He loved lunch meat in the beginning (now not so much) I would get a quarter inch slice of turkey, chicken and ham and dice it up for him. He loved it. Rotissere chicken- nice and moist! Try some other varities of cereal too- lots to choose from! Also, don't worry about stopping the baby food- if he enjoys it, let him have it. My son ate sweet potatoes and the baby oatmeal like they were going out of style until maybe about 16 months. He liked it, he ate it, all is well! I also heard about mixing cottage cheese in with certain foods to give it texture. Never tried it, but could see it working if your child doesn't turn up his nose to the cottage cheese. Good luck and if I can remember anything else, I'll let you know!

If he is into finger foods and isn't having a problem with them forget all the baby food stuff and move along to "people food"!! You don't have to use all the stupid levels of baby food that are out there. Its time to move on up to spegetto's and hot dogs, pb&j, grilled cheese and tomato soup... Banana's and some yogurt are like the perfact breakfast food!! Good luck & best wishes.

My son was exactally the same way. He actually didn't really eat anything but cheerios and crackers until after his first birthday (he gaged at EVERYTHING). Even then it was very picky. Then around 18 months he started experimenting with more things and now at 23 months, he eats most things! Still not huge quantities, but we have learned what is normal for him and can tell if he is getting enough. The doctors never have worried and assured me that some kids never eat baby food and just go straight to people food, that was my son and it sounds like yours! So don't worry!

It sounds ike he is eating everything except those Graduates. Maybe he just doesn't like them? My daughter refused to eat the #3 foods - just didn't like the chunkiness of them (can't blame her, they looked pretty gross to me, too). My son never ate the graduates - preferred "real" food.

Your son sounds like he is eating a pretty wide variety of things for being not even 1...I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Hi Christina,
I have the sam problem with my daughter who is 13mos her diet is pretty much the same as your sons! All she will eat is cheerios, graduate crackers ect. I tryed her with every food possibal that we eat but she does the same thing she eather gags on it or she will through it on the floor. I am also try to find things that she really likes to eat. I also have a upcoming drs app for her so that the doctor can check her weight again bc she is losing and not gaining. But if I get any good advice from my peds about eating I will be glad to share with you. I wish you luck with all of this. Please let me know how you make out!

Don't worry about him especially since he is healthy and growing. I have a gagger also. My son is now 5 years old and a picky eater. My son's diet consist of cheese sandwiches, grilled cheese, Lipton noodles, pizza, french fries and some snack foods. My son's doctor told me to pick my battles and eating should not be a battle. As long as they eat at least one good meal every three days and take a daily vitamin they will be fine. Kids will eat when they are hungry. His doctor says the gagging is more of a texture thing then anything else and eventually they will get over it and start eating different foods. Try not to worry too much about it. Like I said my son is now 5 and still growing nicely despite his picky eating habits.

If he eats just about everything you eat (even just a little of it) why would you want to start him on something that costs you extra money. The baby food companies are just trying to get your money. There is NO medical reason that your child EVER has to eat graduates. Neither of my boys ever ate the graduates. They never even ate the number three foods. Just went straight to table food and since my husband has been laid off, off and on for the last few years I was grateful not to have to buy anything extra. Both of mine were on table food exclusely before their first birthday. Enjoy your son. It sounds like both of you are doing wonderfully.

ok, so it might be a sensory thing as other moms have suggested. it also might be hidden acid reflux. my daughter had reflux till she was about 1 year old and stopped her medication around then. since then one of the doctors in my practice has asked me about the consistancy of the foods that she eats; apparently kids can have hidden reflux if they don't like lumpy or solid foods and prefer softer liquid like foods like the #2 gerber stuff. It might just be that you need to keep introducing this stuff and suddenly he will like it, kids are strange creatures and might like not something one day and love it the next. good luck

Christina,

I know what your going through. My daughter was the same way and still is the same way. She is very very picky. I don't have any suggestions but just keep trying to get him to try everything. I have been battling this for a while, (my daughter turns 4 next month)but you know what she is healthy and growing and if it means letting her eat what she wants then that is fine with me. One thing that is good is that she loves milk, and cheese and some fruits, no veggies at all but the milk gives her the fat that she needs. Hope you have better luck than I had!
