I just found out yesterday that my kids have lice, and I may have them too :( I have never dealt with this and I am literally freaking out. I have 2 boys and a 3 year old girl with long hair. Any advice from you great moms who have dealt with this before would be greatly appreciated! I'm a little concerned about using the toxic shampoos they sell over the counter ie. RID. I was just reading about a product called Quit Nits which is a non-toxic formula. I was wondering if any of you have used it and if it really worked. Any advice, tips, you can give me would be greatly appreciated! I'm really upset about all this....

What can I do next?

Walmart sells an electric comb that kills lice on contact. It works very well & keeps you from having to use toxic shampoos & such. Much easier to use & no retreating. Just use on everyone for a couple of days. Our house was taken over while I was pregnant when our foster child had it & kept getting reinfected every time she visited with her mother. I had to become an expert. Wish I had done the comb first!

My nieces and nephews had lice last year and a friend of hers told her that after she did all the nit picking to use the flat iron on everybodys hair everyday for two weeks. She did and said that it worked.

For the boys, shave their heads. You may still need to nit-pick what little hair they have left, but it will pretty much solve the problem for them. Not so simple for you and your little girl.

Buy the red Rid metal comb for combing out the lice, nits and eggs. Someone on here recommended putting a mixture of white Pantene conditioner and baking soda on the hair to be combed. Rinse out the comb with hot water between each pass. The conditioner will help with the combing. The grittiness of the baking soda will help catch up the nits and eggs.

The combing needs to be done daily for 2 weeks, until you're sure everything is out. It's a major pain. We did a combination of the medicated shampoo and the combing. It was easier for my son since I could shave his head. Not so easy for me.

I recently found out very good friends have a bad case of lice (not from us, we had it 9 months ago). I bought some of the Fairy Tales rosemary spray and put it on my son's hair and my hair to ward off the lice. Hope it works because I sure don't want to go through THAT again!

Best of luck!

I used a non toxic product called Lice MD. It worked just fine. Don't use the poisons...they don't work and they are bad for everyone.

I was pleased to find out that Lice don't spread any awful diseases and they don't live very long when they are away from the host.

We had our first case earlier this year. I'm kind of glad we got it over with...and now I know what to do.

Don't worry...seems to be part of being a parent :)

Lice are getting resistant to a lot of pesticide shampoos anyway. Buy metal lice combs & metal hair clips to section hair & boxes of Kleenex. And a ton of leave in conditioner.

Comb/ Nit pick every day after putting in conditioner until they are nit free, then recheck every 2-3 days for a couple weeks. Wipe comb w/kleenex after each pass and throw in trash. I would set kids up in chair in front of tv every night with a towel around their shoulders to nit pick. I used a camping head lamp for good light/visibility. Boil combs after using.

Bag up all unneeded pillows & stuffed animals for a few weeks & wash bedding frequently. Vacuum high traffic areas like couch & fabric car seats.

Good luck.

I know it's terrible to have that go through your house. When my boys were little we all got it. I shaved my oldest head but little one was too little to do that. He was not even a year old so I couldn't use the shampoos either. I was told to get tea tree old. I mixed it with cooking old and put it all through our hair daily and then used the combs to get them out. Usually we would sleep with the oil in our hair. You want to treat everything even the furniture I would get the spray for that and your car. Wash all bedding in HOT water. and special stuffed animals they can not live without put in the freezer for serveral hours. Bag up everything else for a week if possible. You want to daily use the combs.

Good luck and God Bless!!!!
