Leaky Diapers - Hudson,WI
My 10 month old son has always worn diapers that are many sizes bigger than what are recommended for his age. I have had him in bigger diapers because the smaller ones always leak. I have no problem during the day because I can change him every couple hours but at night it is a different story...he sleeps through the night from 9pm-8am. I really do not want to have to get him into a routine of wakeing him up at night just to change his diaper. He is a great sleeper and I do not want to ruin that schedule because once he wakes up (at night) he has a hard time getting back to sleep.
I use Seventh Generation brand diapers on him during the day and they work great!!--I will not change that. At night I have had him in the Seventh Generation diapers, but have him in the size 5 now and that is as big as they get. I have tried Huggies and Perents Choice at night time also but they too leak. When he wakes up in the morning, he is SOAKED all over, so much that he needs a bath. I will only resort to Pampers or Luvs as a LAST resort, for they are scented and my son has very sensative skin. I think I have seen that Huggies makes "nighttime" diapers?! Has anyone used those??--Did they work for you?? I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions, because I am out of ideas. Thank you so much for any advice given.
So What Happened?™
Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions. I bought the Huggies Overnights and they are working great. I have had only one leak and that is a thousand times better than wakeing every morning I will have to rush my boy to the tub. Thanks again for all the help.

Huggies overnights are worth every penny; we used them with my son and they were the only thing that would work through 12 hrs of sleeping!!! Good luck!

My son had the same problem, he is starting to grow out of that now and he is 20 months old. I use the huggies overnights, but my pediatrition just suggested to me to double up his diapers. Put a smaller one on first and then a size or two bigger over that. I haven't had to do that since he is outgrowing that, but it's worth a shot. Good luck.

I think boys just leak more due to biology if you know what I mean. It's a hassle. I've used nighttime diapers on all 3 of my boys and they seem to hold more than the regular ones. You can try to give him his bottle earlier in the evening so he won't have the need to expel so much liquid in the night.

OK- I have the fix for you!!! Get a Cost-Co membership!!! Their "store" brand (Kirkland) diapers are by far better than all the rest. Just to make it clearer...here is a ture story.....I've used these diapers from size 1-5 for both my kids. My neighbor (8th grade girl) was during a science experiment for her science class and she asked everyone in the neighborhood w/ babies the same age (she needed the same size diaper) if she could have a size 3 diaper from all of us. They were testing all the different brands of diapers to see the absorbancy on each. Kirland was bay far the winner....second place was Pampers. The Kirkland diaper help 10 times (Yes...10 x!) the amount of liquid compared to the Papmers. Huggies came in third and Luvs was a very far behind at 4th. It is worth the membership and you'll never use another diaper!!

My DS has the same problem (he'll be a year next week yay!). I moved him to a size 4 Luvs during the day (love them) and at night he wears Night Time extra absorbancy Pullups, size 2T and they work great. It starts at 18 lbs and he's 23 lbs so I thought I'd give it a try. I absolutely love them! GL!!

My son had the same problem with the leaks. We ended up using Huggies Overnights. They fit like a regular diaper and seem to hold more. It was the only thing that worked. Have you tried changing him in his sleep? We were able to change our son without waking him by keeping very quiet and moving slowly. Good luck.

We had the same problems. My son wears Luvs size 3 during the day but Huggies Overnights size 4 at night and they work awesome. I just make sure that I change him into one right before bedtime and that it is on securely and centered and kind of up higher in the front. They are expensive but worth the full night's sleep for both of us.

Huggies Nighttime Supreme brand is AWESOME!! I was having the same problem with my son around 10-13 months and did have to change him right before bedtime around 8:30 and then again around 2am, so I wouldn't be up changing his bedding and bathing him by morning. I heard about these nighttime diapers here on Mamasource and decided to try them. They are excelllent! Obviously, I only use them at night and use his regular diapers (pampers) during the day, so I only have to buy them every few weeks because they last a long time.

Hi! I have the same problem with my 13-month-old son. I understand your concerns about your son's skin sensitivity, but I switched to using Pampers Dry at night (typically one size larger than his daytime diapers), and that has worked really well for me. My son sleeps about 11-12 hours through, and he is now dry in the mornings. Good luck!

I have the same problem with my 17 month old. I unfortunatly had to go to pampers size 4 (shes usually in 3s and parents choice) and we havent had a leak yet (but its only been a couple days). I didnt want to go to Pampers because of price. You could try putting training pants over the diapers at night. I have heard that works good. Good Luck!

Hi C.!
Huggies overnights work really well, we used those with our son. The other thing we found to work is it limit his liquid intake before bedtime. My sons bedtime is 8, so he knows no more liquids after 7. Hope this helps!

We use the Huggie Overnites and they work great. They used to make liners you could put in the diapers that worked well, but I haven't seen them in the stores lately... I tried using the Poise pads and that worked pretty well- they are pricier, though. You could try a generic brand and see how that works. Just be sure to get the ones for heavier flow...

Limit his intake of fluids before bed. If you are worried about him getting hungry, he can always eat baby food before bed.

This may seem silly, but is his diaper "full"? I'm wondering if he's leaking because his diaper can't hold anymore or because there are gaps at the legs or back. Size 5 seems really big for a 10 month old. My youngest is 13 mo and in a size 1 Luvs and they work great. Good luck to you.

I think when you go too big, diapers start to leak. At least thats what I noticed with my son. Some of his diapers are too big so they leak a lot sooner than the diapers that fit better. I'd try a size 4 and see how that works. My 15 month old is comfortably in a 3 (sometimes he can wear a 2!).

All four of my children had to wear the Overnight Huggies and they worked for us! The other brands we tried just didn't absorb as much and my kids would wake up soaked. With the overnights we didn't have the leaking problems. K.

Huggies are definetly the best!! Try the overnights and if that doesn't solve the problem, double diaper. Use a smaller/fitted huggie overnight with a larger cheaper diaper on the outside. A friend of mine had to do that and she would even change him in the night while he was sleeping sometimes. He's potty training now and stays dry at night, so theres a light at the end of the tunnel. :)

My daughter also has extra sensitive skin and we have had no problems with them she also has always been in a much bigger size than normal because no matter how often i change her she is in a size 6 and is only 1 1/2 years old but has been in them forever. My friend has a daughter same age and size and she is only in a size 3 or 4 so i feel you buy the huggies night time they are great!!!!

We had the same issue with diapers leaking at night but not during the day. LOVE the Huggies Nighttime diapers. They go up to a Size 6, so hopefully there will be something that will work for your little guy. No more waking up to soaked pajamas and soaked sheets after we started using these at night.

My two boys (3 and 21 month) can only wear Luvs at night to avoid leakage. During the day, as you mentioned, its not a problem but if they don't wear Luvs they need baths and bedding changes in the morning. I have tried every brand on the market, would prefer more eco friendly diapers, and continue to go back to the tried and true. My youngest actually seems to be more prone to diaper rashes when I use other diapers. Good luck!

I used the Huggies nighttime diapers with my first child and they worked great. Another thing you could try is putting a vinal/plastic training pant cover over the diaper as that might keep him from being soaked in the morning. Good luck.

Huggies Overnights are the best overnight diaper out there. A sleep consultant also confirmed that when I asked. She also suggested using 2 diapers over one another to help leaks at night... I've never done that because I think it would be uncomfortable and bulky, but it's a suggestion she gave me.
Good Luck!
