LADIES Carrying CANES- New Trend?

My hubs pointed this out to me a few months ago, and he and I keep seeing it, but don't know what this is all about. Seemingly fit women, in their late 20s early 30s are walking around with canes. Not the standard issue grey hospital issued kind, but "fancy" ones, with say blue metalic flecked paint, or flames, or skulls and roses on them or some other such thing. The women don't actually seem to be using the canes, i.e. not weight bearing when they walk with them. We see them largely in the subway, and when they are offered seats, they more often than not decline.

I know that people might have disabilities that aren't conspicuous, and one ought to be sensitive to that, but is there something else at play here? Is this some sort of trend or fashion?

Any insight would be appreciated. This one just boggles my mind.

What can I do next?

Its for protection just in case someone tries to attack them or dogs get too close. BUT,, A lady who walks down my street everyday for the exercise said a cane can make you look weak and vunerable and more likely to attract the attention of an attacker because he/she sees you as an easy mark. This gal carries a golf club on her walks instead. She can swing it better than some flimsy "pretty" cane, and do some real damage to someone trying to bother her. Nothing like an 8 iron to stop a guy in his tracks.

I really hope it's not a fashion trend. Just what I need--something else to CARRY! LOL

Sort of. They sell them at CVS, Walgreens, etc. Some people are using them as walking sticks so that they have something to lean against while waiting and can't or don't want to sit down when they get tired etc.

My sis has one. Sometimes she needs to use it, sometimes not, but she'll take it just in case.

I havent noticed it myself, but maybe it's sort of like a weapon... you know to ward off stray dogs or bop a perv with if need be.

I have not seen this! Maybe they're going for some kind of empowering dignified new look? Or self defense? Maybe it's a new wizardry tool, and we Muggles aren't cool enough to know what it does.

Good idea! It seems like something you would see in an old time lady picture on a wall (just not the skulls or anything, lol)
Probably to protect themselves, not a bad idea. Just my take on it. I have never seen this.

Perhaps for self-defense?

I'm supposed to walk with a cane for neurological impairment (disability issues) and do use it sometimes. It's nice having it with me when I'm alone..I feel a bit empowered by it.

I have never seen or heard of this. My first thought was probably cuz their feet hurt from wearing high heels all the time! LOL!

I HAVE seen it here in Huntington Beach, CA. The "vamp" guys use them to look cool...dorks! I do not see anything cool or sexy about using a cane unnecessarily. Hopefully this one finds it way OUT sooner than later!

I've never seen it, personally, so I can't give an opinion.

Well, I wish it had been trendy 10 years ago when I needed a cane for walking! I was recovering from a broken femur, and it was after 4-5 months of physical therapy before I graduated to a cane. It was a pain to carry around. You know, one legged sticks are hard to keep upright when you sit down somewhere. It was always falling over. I would never choose to carry one if I didn't need it! I haven't seen anything like that here, but we don't live in a big city.

In my area you see women carrying canes and golf clubs for self defense. Mostly against dogs while out walking.
