My 8 year old hit his shin at the park a couple weeks ago, and a knot was formed. It's been about 3 weeks and it's still there. He complains every once in awhile about it. Any clue about this? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Welcome to mamapedia!

This is a hematoma (a bruise) which is blood pooling under the skin on the fatty tissue where the damage/injury was done. However, I have more questions than answers...

What did your son hit his leg on?
Is it red or inflamed?
Has the knot changed shape?
Can you move the knot or is it solid?
Is it hot to the touch?

It can take up to 4 weeks for a bruise to go away. If it is STILL red or painful after three weeks? I'd make a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning and talk to him/her about it.

Good luck!

Sometimes they just take forever to go away. I've found that the shin in particular is a tricky location. I got hit by a softball on my shin and I'm not kidding that knot was there for months. It hurt when I poked it but other than that didn't bother me too much. I think it's probably fine and it will go away eventually.

My son broke his collar bone and there was a knot for a month. It was knot and not a bruise, no bruising, just a round high knot on the bone. Your son may have fractured his shin and the bone is healing, thats usually a knot. You should really go in for an X-ray just in case its not healing correctly.

When I was a teenager, I got kicked in the shin by a cow, and it raised a huge bump that remained painful for weeks, and to this day, I still have a bump there and that was 50 years ago. No my leg was not broken.
