Kinda Scared

So I recently had sex in which we decided to take the morning after pill (Next Choice) 2 days afterward. It says it works up to 72 hours so we were in the time limit just fine. Needless to say, I missed my period this month and took a pregnancy test. Which to my surprise came back positive. A little less than a week ago I started bleeding bright red, but that was only for a day. on two other instances that only lasted a couple hours I bled darker almost brownish colored. Tonight I had bad cramps, so I went to the ER. The baby is still there and has a heart beat. However the heartbeat is only 120, it's size is measuring 2 weeks less than it should be and then my dr also tells me that I have subchorionic hemorrhaging. (which is the cause of the bleeding). But no one can tell me (not the ER dr, a pharmacist, planned parenthood, nor have I found it on the net) what the side effects to a baby could be from taking the pill. Or what my chances are that this could be a normal healthy pregnancy. I have 2 other children, both were text book perfect pregnancies, nearly identical to each other. So, I'm just wondering if anyone has gone through any of this and could maybe give me some answers I can't seem to get anywhere else. I'm really scared about what could end up happening to the baby or myself.

What can I do next?

Since it's a one-time relatively low dose of hormones I doubt it's an issue. I know more than one person who got pregnant while on birth control pills (which is a continuous dose of hormones that they baby was exposed to for at least a couple of weeks until they realized they were pregnant) and they had perfectly normal pregnancies and healthy babies.

You mentioned that the size is measuring 2 weeks less than it should be? Is there any chance that you could have gotten pregnant at a different time? It's hard to be specific on the dates, I realize, but perhaps it's a non-issue.

I am a pharmacist, and this comes from "Clinical Pharmacology," which is a professional website:
"The majority of recent studies do not indicate a teratogenic effect of progestin-only contraceptives when taken inadvertently during early pregnancy;"
So I wouldn't be too concerned about having taken the Next Choice, in any event. there are no guarantees, of course, but people have gotten pregnant while on the pill with no adverse effects.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have no answers, but I am so sorry for your situation. It is difficult enough to make the choices we do today regarding pregnancy and I hope all works out well for both of you, whatever that may mean. All the best.

i had a subchorionic hemorrhage, I bled very heavily and with very large fist sized clots for about 14 weeks - scared me to death everytime I passed one of those clots, but my daughter was born perfectly healthy, and I carried her to term

the morning after pill (which is very similar to the regular pill) does not have any effect on your baby, they know it has a small failure rate so it has to be safe, 1 woman out of every 100 or so it will fail, so they have to know it is safe for that small percentage of women, who will still have a baby in their womb after taking it.

My sister conceived her son while she was on the pill, he is now 19, 6 foot 4 and in university, very much a man!

also with my son I was taking a couple of really strong pills for various things hen i conceived him (by accident lol) and i was really concerned that it would harm him, but he is fine. apparently there are only a few drugs that will affect the baby.

I hope your baby will be ok - obviously you didnt want to be pregnant right know, but it looks like your baby wants to cling on.

First off, fear only makes things worse, even physically, so take a deep breath and relax! The morning after pill is a pill that simply removes the egg whether it has been fertilized or not. Knowing that, you know that this little one is strong and is a fighter! The best thing at this point is to do everything you can to make this baby healthy.

Make sure you are on an absorbable prenatal vitamin as well as Omega 3s for his heart and brain. I can recommend one if you like. (OBs usually just give you what the pharmaceutical rep is passing out these days.) Chiropractic care in pregnancy makes your body work better so the little one gets what he needs. If you interview a chiropractor and he doesn't understand the immune system, then you are at the wrong office. I know a great chiropractor in Lawrenceville if you want his name and number. I can probably even get you a free first visit to interview and get an assessment. He's not my chiropractor because I live too far away but he went to school with mine and I have referred many people I love to him and he has taken care of them all.

There are a lot of side effects to this pill but there are side effects to all pharmaceuticals. I would just take it from this point and go forward. Let me know if you'd like any information about the vitamin or the chiropractor. I'll be glad to help.

God bless you and congratulations on this little one!

. The morning after pill does not always work for everyone. My advice is to go to a different doctor that specializes in special pregnancies..Don't depend on one doctors opinion. My sister in law bled through her entire pregnancy and had a perfectly normal healthy baby so it depends on what the bleeding is from. Go to a specialist. The bleeding could have nothing to do with the pill you took or the pregnancy. You need to get a second and possibly a third opinion before making any decisions.

Hi D.,

Sorry to hear you are having this problem. I also had a lot of bleeding during 3 of my pregnancies. I really think bed rest as much as humanly possible helps a lot. Also avoid lifting anything, sitting down or rising up quickly. I know that seems extreme, but I can't tell you how many times I would have bleeding after just plopping down in a chair or jogging across the yard to get something. If possible, try to get some help with housework and caring for your kids. Hopefully, this bleeding will quit as your pregnancy advances but you really need to take care of yourself now.

I can't speak about what effects the pill will have on the baby but I don't think it should be a concern. Embryos at that stage are actually pretty hardy.
I can tell you about my experience with a subchorionic hemorrhage. I had one with my first pregnancy and the best advice I can give you is DO NOT look things up about it on-line. It's worst case scenario stuff that you find. ANd it just makes you more worried and upset. Your doctor should be doing a follow-up ultrasound(s) to monitor the hemorrhage. She/he should be watching to make sure the placental growth is over-taking the bleed. Some women bleed with it through their entire pregnancy and some (like me) it resolves. But they need to monitor it. Our doc and other sources I read said that bed rest typically doesn't make much difference but of course you will want to take it easy but strict bed rest doesn't make any difference in the condition. Get in with a good doctor who understands the condition and knows how to monitor it. You might even consider going to a high-risk doctor until it stabilizes. But do get in to see the doctor so you can be monitored. Best to you and a healthy pregnancy.

My understanding of the "morning after pill" is that it prevents the fertilized egg from implanting, but that it does not terminate a pregnancy if one implants. It usually takes about 24-72 hours after having unprotected sex to actually "get pregnant"- meaning fertilization and implantation. So, you must have ovulated and implanted very quickly meaning that the pill didn't have its intended effect. It likely metabolized out of your system and should not impact the rest of your pregnancy!

I was told by my ob/gyn that taking Plan-B while already pregnant wouldn't cause any harm to the fetus. Of course, it was also qualified with "No studies show any adverse affects", but I wouldn't be too concerned. How often do women continue their birth control before they even realize they are pregnant? Relax, enjoy it.

Hi D.-

I am a pharmacy technician and just wanted to let you know, that although I do not know specifically what side effects the pill may have on your unborn baby, I do know that 99% of people that come into the pharmacy do NOT know how the morning after pill works. It will NOT cause a woman to have a miscarriage if you are already pregnant.
So, since you took the pill 2 days later that is why it had no effect on preventing the pregnancy. Most women think it will "abort" the pregnancy if they take it which is completely untrue. It only causes the uterus to spasm and makes the lining of the uterus thin, making implantation harder to occur. But only if implantation has not happened already. Just thought I would clear that up.

I am also a mother of 2 with 1 on the way and I can say that I had similar bleeding issues early on with my first daughter. I thought I was having a miscarriage as well because there was so much blood but to my surprise, they did the ultrasound and the baby was still there.
I'm not sure how far along you are, so I cannot say anything about the baby's measurements but if you are under 3 months pregnant, it is almost impossible to get accurate measurements that early. However, I do know that a fetal heart rate of 120 is within the normal range of 120-170.
I wish you the best and pray that everything works out perfectly for you and your baby. ♥
