hello! I am writing on behalf of my friend who has gone through the most amazing journey so far....looking for POSITIVE stories only please.....My friend is 6 weeks pregnant and has been staining/bleeding since day 1. Two weeks after taking the pregnancy test she started to stain/bleed and then have heavy clotting. She rushed to the dr where he told her she had a miscarriage - only to find out 3 days later through a "high tech" more thorough internal sonogram that she is in fact STILL PREGNANT!!! I have never heard of this beofre in my life. It was the longest weekend of her life. Needless to say they are in shock and thrilled but she is once again STILL staining/bleeding. her dr isnt having her go in for another appt until April 8th. ( not a fan of this dr)...has anyone ever heard/experienced this beofre????? thank you for your time ladies! =0)

What can I do next?

I had bleeding with my 2nd son for almost 2 months, but it didnt start until i was 6 wks pregnant. i had mild placenta previa, but it went away by the 3rd trimester. She should have an ultrasound to see if that's the cause, perhaps. good luck!

I had a friend I worked with who did that through her whole pregnancy and she had twin boys. She was fine. But if it makes you feel any better maybe you should see a different doctor and get a second opinion. good luck and congrats.

I havent experienced that myself, although I did have a friend who was having random bleeding during her pregnancy which they told her to go on bed rest for a few days, which helped. Also, there's nothing keeping her from finding a new doctor. I did it early in my pregnancy b/c I didnt feel my doctor was answering my questions adequetely, and I never regretted it.

i had a friend that took a prego test, came back pos. Then she got her period, dr told her the same thing, that she miscarried. They never checked again. She continued to have her period every month. And about 6 months after she took the test, she started gaining alot of weight, went to the dr, and She was still Prego! She carried to the baby to term and he was perfectly healthy

I had a friend that when she was around 20 wks preg, she started bleeding extremely heavy. She rushed to the Dr., and sure enough she was having a miscarriage. Her hormones levels were waaay down, and bleading really bad. Dr. told her to go home, and rest over the weekend that she was having a misscarriage and to come back the next week. Well, when she came back, her bleeding had stopped and her levels were back up again. She wasn't having a mc after all(miracle if you ask me!) and she has a wonderful 16 yo girl now! I hope your friend will be ok, but I would go see a 2nd Dr. just to be sure.

I have heard of people who had bleeding and sustained a pregnancy, so it's definitely possible!

I'm pretty sure it couldn't be placenta previa yet (the placenta is still not very developed. My doctor told me during my 8 week ultrasound he still couldn't say where it would be).

I'm pretty sure there's nothing they can do for first trimester bleeding as long as they've ruled out low progesterone (low progesterone can cause bleeding and miscarriage and it can be corrected; otherwise, it's pretty much just a waiting game). If she has any signs/symptoms of low progesterone, such as spotting before she gets her period, I'd recommend having her levels drawn asap. Otherwise, I wish her good luck!

Hi L.,
Some women do have staining/bleeding throughout their pregnancies and go on to have fullterm pregnancies and healthy babies. I hope this will be the case for your friend!

I didn't have this problem, just a little spotting around implantation (when I would have gotten my next normal period if I had not been pregnant). But years ago my mom did have this problem early in her pregnancy with me. Her doctor (who was an experienced, older doctor in 1970) gave her progesterone from birth control pills for a few weeks.

However, I do agree with others that if her current doctor is not answering her questions she might want to check around for another. I switched to a midwife literally in the 8th month so it is doable. Also some insurance companies have a phone line with a nurse who answers questions.

My 2nd daughter it was the same way. I thought I was miscarrying and went to the ER since it was after hours. I thought for sure i was cramps and clotting and bleeding. they did a sono and said she was fine. They called it deep implanting I was 8 weeks at the time. She is now 4.

One of my friends visited me when she was several months pregnant and after she left there was a stained pad in the waste basket. She is a medical doctor and would have said something if it were a problem. Also she delivered a healthy full term baby. I think that staining can be normal for quite some time. It probably depends on what type of staining. Hers was dark, like it can get towards the end of a period.

I can't get an understanding about how much time has passed since the sonogram or how much blood is involved. I suggest that she call the advice nurse and ask about it.

As to whether or not this is common, google pregnancy and staining/bleeding. Try different variations. Just yesterday I googled a term related to pregnancy and discovered something drastically new to me.

Dear L.,

This could be a case of a low-lying placenta -- or proto-placenta, the placenta will only be in the early stages of development at this stage in a pregnancy. I had that, and it developed into full-blown placenta previa. BUT, the previa eventually resolved, I carried my pregnancy to term, I had a completely natural delivery, and I'm now the mom of a unique, extremely smart little 3-year-old boy. However, while your friend has every reason to be hopeful, I think she should also be cautious and avoid strenuous activity and intercourse until she gets a clean bill of health. Best wishes to her!

I bled heavily for a long time. Son is now 33 yo. NYC firefighter with a son
of his own and another on the way. Good luck. Will keep her in my
prayers. The April 8 appt. is normal. There is really nothing they can do
unless the bleediing is uncontrollable. I know your friend would like to be
at the docs every day for confirmation. Just try to hang in.

I'm not sure why you are limiting your advice to positive stories. I understand you only want to hear about happy endings because this is scary, but isn't advice of any kind in such an odd, scary time important? The only thing I can tell you then is she should be getting a second opinion if the doctor isn't doing anything to address this such as possibly putting her on progesterone. It seems like he is just taking a wait and see approach and either the pregnancy will stick or not whereas, like I said, I believe doctors can prescribe something to help give the pregnancy a boost - more of a chance so to speak. Have her ask him or a new doctor about progesterone because that is sticking in my head for some reason - I could be wrong but I'm not sure.

I wish your friend the best and hope things do work out. How awesome it would be to share with the little one what a little miracle he/she is.

Did they give her any kind of diagnosis? You can have bleeding in early pregnancy for a variety of reasons but usually not that heavy. I had the same thing happen right around 6 weeks and I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hemorrhage. Basically a bleed where the baby implanted. If this is the case she needs to be monitored every 2 weeks to check to see if the bleed is resolving or continuing. Some women have it their entire pregnancy and for others, like me, it resolves. But they need to keep monitoring her to see if the placenta is outpacing the growth of the bleed or if the bleed appears to be resolving. It can be very serious so she may want to consider a different doctor who will give her more info and monitoring than this one seems to be. Do not google this or look it up. You will only find worst case scenario stuff! I had a healthy little one (even though he came early for other reasons-I had a very exciting first pregnancy!).

Also, if she experiences bleeding that is more than a regular pad in an hour or clots she needs to get herself to the ER.

I would be calling the doctors office in the morning and demanding to see the doctor again if I was still having bleeding. There can be some implantation bleeding but that typically goes away and isn't very heavy, but with clots... that is a bit alarming. I would be going back for a second opinion. I have had two miscarriages, not fun, its so much easier to just know and put your mind at ease. Don't wait until the 8th.. alot can happen in 2 weeks.

She needs to FIND A NEW DOCTOR! Seeing that everytime you pee is incredibly stressful, regardless of the reason, and there is ALWAYS a reason. I had placenta previa for my entire second pregnancy. Every little clot, every little feeling of pressure was terrifying. My doctor did not seemed concerned nor did he think I needed anymore medical attention than a normal non-bleeding pregnancy. At 25 weeks I felt like I might have a UTI and made an appointment anyway. The UTI feeling turned out to be contractions. At the hospital they tried every means possible to stop the labor (which STILL did not feel like the labor I had with my first baby). After four days of torture we gave up and DAniel was born at 1lb, 8oz. This was the first I'd EVER heard of a perinatologist, a neonatal unit, etc....my doctor did not prepare me for this in anyway. This is not a sad story, after a number of set backs my son is healthy and normal in every way and now 15...My point is we girls need to take a little of our own responsibility and find a doctor we like who CARES, and takes the TIME to educate you.....

I got the surprise of my life to find out I was prego when my 1st was 10 mths old. I didnt know i was pregnant at 1st bcause I got what I thought was my period at the time I should have gotten it. Then continiued to stain/bleed for 3 wks so went to dr to find out what was up. Turns out I was at least 8 wks pregnant and they rushed me for bloodwork and sono and told me 50/50 chance of miscarriage. Sono showed sweet little fetus w heartbeat but a bleed around the sac. I was told to take it easy (not so easy w 10 mth old) - no work no sex no heavy lifting etc.- but not exactly bedrest. 1 week later i bled so heavily (red) i just sat on the toilet for an hr thinking that was it (sorry for TMI). Next day, sono showed baby still ok but bleed around sac was less so probably was shedding itself. In the end, I had a completely normal rest of pregnancy (except for uncomfortable breech position she got herself into!) and went on to have a beautiful healthy baby girl who is now almost 10 mths old herself! (And for obvious reasons I am not even letting my husband near me! :0 heehee)
I wish your friend all the luck and best wishes in the world! And it maybe time to ask around for more caring, nurturing dr. (Although mine was no bowl of cherries either!)

Hi L.:

I have never heard of this before. Has she gotten a second opinion? There must be a reason for this. Please let me know.
