JFF - What Do You Totally "Geek Out" For?

Growing up I was a HUGE Star Wars fan (as in, my older brother and I had the entire dialogue memorized for "A New Hope."

I'm a History nerd, and a choir nerd.

New to me is this strange new world of fantasy fiction. OMG, I am incredibly hooked on the series "A Song of Ice and Fire." Seriously, I think about it all day long. I've read the first 5 books and probably would have read more if #s 6 & 7 were already written. I've gotten pretty obsessed with it--I joined 3 Facebook discussion groups about it & the HBO show adapted from it.

So, I've come clean--what's geeks you out??

What can I do next?

Not much "geeks me out." But, I am a huge fan of A Song of Ice and Fire. It's a great series! I'm waiting with bated breath for Season 2 of Game of Thrones to come out on the Kindle since we don't subscribe to HBO.

I'm a huge Stanley Kubrick fan, obsessively so I'd say. I'm a proud nerd who isn't into most mainstream things. I have a serious obsession with WWII and the Third Reich. *I'm not a racist and do not subscribe to any thought processes associated with it.* Due to watching the Big Bang Theory I've actually done research on a ton of topics discussed on the show. I love to read anything about the origins of humanity.

Whoo hoo! Another Martin fan! And a female one at that!

(Quietly calming down and acting like the respectable mother I am.)

I, too, love the "A Song of Fire and Ice" series. I did not know about the Facebook discussion groups (please PM with the info), but I do get on the forums on Westeros.com and WinterIsComing.net--religiously, especially right now with the final episode tomorrow.

I am VERY obsessed with the books and show (not to the point of dressing up as a character, but pretty close); to the point that I tried to bribe my sixteen year old daughter to read the books so I could have someone to talk to about it. (Shameless, I know. And bad parenting to boot, when I think about the content.)

This obsession, unfortunately, is not my only geeky obsession. When I was younger, I loved Star Wars and still have a special place in my heart for the movies and characters. However, my heart truly belongs to fantasy and not scifi. When I found out that Peter Jackson was going to make the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy into a set of movies, it was one of the happiest days of my life (second to the birth of my children, of course). I was and am a HUGE Tolkien fan, and Jackson did not disappoint (although I would have loved to see Tom Bombadil on screen). Another day that made me extremely happy was the day that Jackson FINALLY decided to direct "The Hobbit." I am still not sure why it took him so long to finally step in, but I am grateful that he did.

Okay, I better stop before I keep going on about dorky stuff that nobody (or very few) care about. Suffice it to say, yes, I do have a few geeky things about me, but I am okay with that. (I used to not be okay with it, and I still feel a little embarrassed twinge whenever I hear someone mention "Dungeons and Dragons.")

Okay - I'll come clean - I remember all the words to the songs in Rocky Horror Picture Show. I saw it in college and my friends all sang and danced "Let's do the timewarp again", over and over... And yeah, we all went to the midnight movie more times than I can probably count.

Funny - I can't memorize the radio songs anymore, but I can remember THESE songs from my college days!

Oh, Talkstotrees - Do you know Asimov's short story "It's Such a Beautiful Day"? I loved that story!

And a nod to the other ladies who like Joss Whedon and Buffy/Angel (I have the entire series of both on DVD), Lord of the Rings, movie and books (I must have read the books 20 times.)

And who didn't grow up loving Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock!?

I like talking with people. I want to talk all day long.

My husband is with you on A Song of Ice and Fire. He has read through those books enough times that the covers have all torn off. Watching Game of Thrones with him is awesome because I get lost every few moments, and he has to remind me who is who, what their house has been doing for the last few hundred years, why... :-)

I LOVE HISTORY!!! especially religious history (not one religion, but all religions) and how it has influenced the development, or lack thereof, of different areas of the world. I so enjoy all sorts of History based books, movies and series; my husband always jokes that if its “English and boring” than I will like it for sure ;-)
In the past few years I also became a Science fiction fan of stories like Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, Narnia and lately for the series of Merlin, because since I was a child I always loved everything to do with King Arthur, Excalibur and magic and magical beings.
Of course I also enjoy politics and its history; I just can’t help it even when I get all upset about the lies told by politics in general.

Books.*swoon* I have an almost shameful lust for them; they make my mouth water. Like Bug, I find libraries and bookstores just wonderful. I could--and have-- spend hours in them just reading titles and synopsis'. I was way too happy when Carrie (SATC) chose to get married in the NY Public Library. Wish I'd thought of that (in my own town, of course).

I also have a thing for journals. I have a sizeable collection that I use to write poems, ideas, storylines, etc.

I know I must get "geeky" over other things, but right now only books are on the brain. :)

I love the series, too & am currently watching Game of Thrones on HBO. There are minor differences, but it is really true to Martin's series (he's directly involved, so it's no surprise).

Read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. GREAT!

My favorite fantasy author is Guy Gavriel Kay. He did the Fionvar Tapestry trilogy, and several really good singles. His most recent couple, however, have fallen a bit flat with me.

Star Trek
Joss Whedon TV series & movies
Historical fiction.
Anything horse-related (fiction or non-fiction)

I'm a museum geek. All kinds: art, history, science, aquariums, kids museums, love the zoo, too.

Especially on road trips.... I have to stop at every one, walk slowly through, read every board, look at every detail. Drives my kids nuts. They zip through and meet me at the exit.

Seinfeld. Probably the most oft' quoted show in our house. And our cats are named after obscure Seinfeld references.
Star Wars and Harry Potter movies and books are favorites of me, my husband, and my son. No doubt my daughter will be along for the ride once she can really read.
Books in general are my true geek love. My idea of a perfect day would include hours upon hours of uninterruped browsing time in used bookstores. In a world filled with too much "stuff", books, to me, are the only thing worth acquiring and keeping in huge numbers, the more the better.

Fun post!

Gotta fess up to Scrabble and crossword puzzles. Yuppers. Look forward to my puzzle every night, just as much as my glass of Cabernet. Oh yes, love to talk wine as well but am known for "whining as well."

Book-wise, I love the Katherine Reich series. The main character is a forensic anthropologist. If this sounds familiar, the series "Bones" is based on her book. Also, love Michael Connelly books, Detective Harry Bosch.

And don't even get me started on Tetris. I've honed my skills by playing it on my treadmill!
