Past or present?

Just curious. Do you have to be a full fledge Trekkie to really enjoy it?

I'm not a Trekkie but my son likes the show (way back from the 60's) and the movies.

What can I do next?

Never gone, but it seems like so much fun.

We love the original series and I am really enjoying the JJ Abrahms movies as well.

I use to go all the time!
I've seen Walter Konig, William Shatner, James Doohan, Robert Picardo and Robert Duncan McNeill and they were all fascinating speakers.
Anybody can go.
There were trivia contests and costume contests - and they were a blast to go to.
There's always at least a few people who have very impressive Klingon costumes.
Of course there's lot's of memorabilia to buy if you so desire.
Tribbles are always popular.
(Best bumper sticker I ever saw "Human by birth / Klingon by choice").
Take him to a couple!
You'll both have a great time!

Heck yeah. I haven't been recently, but I went when I was a kid. I went about 10 years ago and saw Odo from Deep Space 9, Patrick Stewart. They're great. But I'm a geek and a Trekkie. If you are social and a people watcher, and you like the show enough to talk about it with your son, you'll definitely enjoy it. It's a great feeling to be around people who enjoy something you do when they're all enjoying it at the same time. It's kind of like a concert or renaissance fair, but science fiction themed.

I went to one accidentally. I was in New Orleans with friends for Halloween, and at the same hotel it was a full on Star Trek Convention party. Oh my goodness, it was a blast. BTW, I was dressed as Dolly Parton, in the days before I had my breast reduction surgery, and I had every hot Captain Kirk flirting with me.

Now, I'm not sure it's a place for kids, but then again, I only saw the evening Halloween aspect.

I've been to both Star Trek cons and a general con. Both were highly enjoyable. My aunt had a good time at the Star Trek con and she's not into the show, just what she's caught around me. My mom was bored at the one she took me to, but it only had 1 castmember, and not much in the way of booths and stuff like the one my aunt took me to. The con we went to this past summer had people from Star Trek, Firefly, Doctor Who, etc, and we all enjoyed, even my 6 year old who had no idea why mommy was crying when she met some old guy in a wheelchair (Peter Mayhew). Usually fans at cons are also fun, although there can be creepers, most cons are trying to crack down on that.

(And we consider ourselves full fledged trekkies, we got married on the bridge of the Enterprise in Vegas, complete with a Klingon to scare my grandma.)

FYI, Sally R, William Shatner is like that in real life, too. At the con my aunt took me to, someone asked him a Star Trek question and he said "The show's been over for 30 years" and went on instead about his ear problems.

Never been to one, but the thought of it always brings back memories of SNL and William Shatner asking all of the trekkies..."don't you people have a life?"...if that's your thing...go!

LOL! Yes - a long time ago! I met "Chekov" and ended up sitting at a table with him for dinner. He is such a small man and very pale without his TV makeup!

It was just the original series back then. I was lucky to go to lectures given by both Gene Roddenbury , creator of Star Trek, and Jimmy Doohan (Scotty). Not the same as conventions, but so very interesting.

There are so many Star Treks now that I don't know if I would want to go to a big convention with them all, but maybe you'd really like it.

I went once, a very long time ago. I had the best time. It was so much fun. I'm a fan and have followed everything Trek from the original series to the current movies.

You truly don't have to be a Trekkie to enjoy it but there is so much ground covered there. It does help to have a point of reference though.

I would probably do it again but not anytime soon. I have too many other things going on. We just saw the latest movie and loved it. I say take him and have a great time.

They can be expensive so if you are not a full fledge Trekkie it may be difficult to enjoy depending on your disposable income amounts.

I am not a full fledge Trekkie, but would enjoy attending - the money is what stops me from going.

I went to something similar. It was a Lord of the Rings one in Toronto when The Return of the King came out. It was fun! I met a lot of fun people. I wouldn't think you would have to be a full fledge Treekkie to enjoy it.
