JFF Mother of the Year Stories

Someone else posted about Mom of the Year Award, and it reminded me that my friend and I often facetiously call ourselves Mother of the Year when we've done some particularly poor parenting. For example, I was 'Mother of the Year' yesterday when I arrived home from work feeling sick, then let my kids eat dessert before their dinner, and then have rice crispies for dinner. Then, instead of our usual bedtime routine of showers and stories and lullabies, I told them to watch extra tv, then get into bed without stories. In order to keep them in bed I told them the bedtime police would be coming to check later on (yes, i know - Mother of the Year!). Dreadful stuff, but I had to do it to cope when I was feeling like death! Last summer my friend somehow let her little girl get very sunburnt. Usually she's an excellent mother. What's your Mother of the Year story?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ThanKs guys, not many responded.... Maybe everyone else is perfect? ;-). I just remembered, last Christmas my five year old fell over and for two days was complaining of a sore arm...yep, you guessed it, broken wrist. Poor kid. He loved having a cast though. My MIL told my husband to stop complaining for a week when he was eight. He had fractured his arm.

I'm laughing. You did your best under the circumstances. Nobody got hurt and they all ate and slept.

I'd hold up a letter when my kids refused to bathe and call out I received a letter from the board of health. "Really Mom" "Yes want to see it".

You are a good mom with a fine sense of humor.

I ended up with a major flu right after my daugher was born. Like litterally so sick I could hardly get off the couch. I ended up getting a few bottles made, kept them by the couch in a bowl of ice water, and had her in the baby swing for probably 6 hours until my husband got home. she was so easy going and just swang and played and slept! I felt terrible to have her in there tho...

Then I had my son, he was about 18 mos. I heard him on the baby monitor early one morning crying which he never did, I was so tired I turned off the monitor!!! When I woke up I was like OMG! And ran in there and his foot was stuck between the poles! He was asleep and ok but I was like Mother of the Year for sure!!!

Those are the only 2 things I can think of. Yeah, how come no one else fessed up except for the few of us????

When my son ws about 2, he was really attached to his hot wheels cars and in fact still is and he would take them everywhere with him. We were getting out of our minivan once and I would not let him take his hot wheels cars with him, because they are too hard to keep track of, well, at the last minute just before I shut the sliding door, he stuck his hand in and slammed the door shut on his hand. I had to take him to the emergency room, but he was fine, no broken bones, just some swelling. I felt horrible, even though he stuck his hand at the last second, I should have been more careful, cause he's only 2.

Great topic!
I was taking my little one to get her pictures taken. As the photographer was setting up, I turned around to pick up my then 2 year old and somehow stuck her in the eye with my fingernail! She was fine, despite the screams, and I felt horrible. Her two year old pictures proudly display a big red mark/early bruise on her beautiful little face. Mother of the Year!

i think you ARE mother of the year! that's a great coping policy for an extreme circumstance!
mine is much uglier. my kids got in a tussle and i separated them and went back to being busy with Other Things. my younger was complaining that his foot hurt, but i snapped at him and kept doing my thing. a few hours later he was crying with the pain, and i took him to the doctor and found out one of the little bones was broken.
talk about a guilt trip!

I was at work, I worked for a small publishing firm that did two weekly newspapers. It was production day and I was numbering the pages for the two papers and two matching free advertising papers, a complex task. My dad called and said my son had bumped his head and was crying. I said I'd come up on my break. Then he called and said he was ok, sleeping. I freaked and asked if he could be woken up. My dad called back and said he woke up and barfed. That was it, I left work, even forgot my purse and took him to the ER. He had fractured his skull and had a severe concussion. He was hospitalized and subsequently he got pneumonia from some woman in the room next door (nurses going back and forth passed it), then he developed asthma from the whole thing/missed a month of school. Did I feel quilty...oh yeah, still do.

BTW; I think the 4th of July got in the way of replies, not saintly motherhood. lol

Your follow up reminded me of one of many MOTY worthy moments. My son had complained about his finger hurting... to me on the phone. To my friend who had picked him up (while they were driving). And again to me as I was loading him in to the car after work. Too dark to see there, we headed off to the video store (yeah, back in the day). Dropped off the old movies, picked out some new ones. And some CDs. Standing in the long line mentioned it again. His pinky finger was swollen and black. I almost vomited. I think maybe the guy in line behind us almost did, too. Needless to say we dropped everything and headed to urgent care. His finger was fractured.

When my daughter was two, she "tripped" at the preschool & then suddenly refused to stand up & walk. No tears, swelling, nothing. They called me & I was in a client meeting. You know how kids are - one minute they're dying & the next they're swinging thru the air like Tarzan. So I told them to keep an eye on her and I'd check on her after the meeting. I called back and she still refused. I called the dr and they said they'd see her - but not for like 3 hours, so I sent my mom to get her so I could finish up at work. She sat in a chair & refused to stand up & walk. Still no tears, swelling, nothing. I finally picked her up & took her to the dr. They x-rayed her from the hips to the toes. And, yep, one of the small bones was fractured! Yep I felt like MOTY!

When my son was 2, he went down the slide head first and scraped his head. They called & said it looked bad - you know how those skin abrasions can be - usually look worse they they are, but they thought he was fine, just wanted to tell me. On my lunch break, I went to check on him, he was sleeping peacefully, so I left him. I picked him up after work and it looked like your typical bloody scrape. He was happy, no complaints. We went out to dinner and then went home. The next morning when he woke up, his eye was swollen shut and it was black & blue! I freaked out. Rush him to the dr. They sent us to the hospital and did a CT scan. Yep, he had a fractured the orbital bone! Nothing they can do for it. And, he was fine. But, still. MOTY!

We all have our moments. Just some of us are not willing to confess. No one is perfect! Just keep on doing the best you can.

Well mine goes back to my firstborn...he is 13 now.
I think he was about two weeks old and I had just fed him during the night. I was exhausted and was burping him, well I dropped him on the floor. That woke me up real quick. He was okay thank god, he only fussed when I picked him up off the floor. I bawled my eyes out...hubby still reminds me of this on occasion. We can giggle about it now.
We have two more boys 8 and 4. I'm sure I have plenty more awards, but somehow I still never have forgotten about my first.
