Jeans for Boys!

I cannot keep my boys (ages nine and seven) in jeans. Every pair I buy the knees blow out. Does anyone have a favorite durable brand? I have tried Old Navy, Target, Wal- Mart, Levi's, Eddie Bauer, Osh Kosh, Wrangler and they all fall apart. Thank goodness it's almost summer!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW! How come I have been a mother of boys for nine years and no one ever told me about this Sears thing before? They should advertise this replacement program. It would put them back on the map. I am definetly going to check it out. Thanks to all the moms that weighed in on this one!

D. good luck! If you find something let me know! My son blow out his knees all the time. I've begun to just patch his pants up and have him go until they're unpatchable. Even his school pants, I can't afford to buy him more pants every week.

I don't know if they still have this program, but Sears used to have a plan that if they out grew, or got holes in jeans you could take them back and get a new pair free. I signed up for it when Sears was still here in Leavenworth.

Hi D.,

Just when I thought I would lose my mind from the jean knee blowouts of my son, they stopped. I talked to him about being more careful. No trauma to him, he is still very active. But more than that, I think he just finally outgrew the stage. I tried patching the knees and that worked but the jeans were stiff and uncomfortable then and it was some work and the patches liked to come off after a few washings (probably helped along by my son, I suspect).

I'm just writing to offer support and empathy. That stage of our clothing life sucked! But, this, too, shall pass. Did you ever notice there are no size 7 - 10 boys jeans in thrift and second hand shops?

When my boys were young I had the same problem. I purchased more expensive jeans from Sears and instead of a new pair a week, we only need them every other week. LOL Whatever you buy for them why not try ironing on patches. I assume they still have iron patches. Put one on the outside and one on the inside. Hopefully that will work for you.

My name is L. and I wll be 61 next month. That makes my youngest son 34 so it has been a long time. Maybe the patches will help.

Okay, Sears has a program for jeans. For every pair you buy, if the knees wear out or they get holes, you can take them in and get 1 replacement pair for each pair you buy! Just keep your receipt. This includes any brand in the store!!!

I am not sure how true this is, I haven't given it a shot, but I was told that I believe its sears, but not positive, I know some department store at a mall. But I've heard that they will exchange a pair of jeans if worn out before the child grows out of them. I looked for the email but its been so long ago I'm not sure. It wouldnt hurt to ask around, I mean if you are buying a pair of jeans for $30 or so and never have to pay to replace them unles they grow out of them or say $15 for a new pair however often I mean it might save some money. I know when my boys get that age I will definately be looking into it.

Well it sounds like you have tried every jean possible. Have you tried possibly putting an iron on patch on the inside of the knee. They're not costly and it sounds like it may be worth a try. It would be like double material on the knee. Hope this helps.

Hello!! I feel your pain....I have tried Old Navy, Levis, Arizona's, Wrangler, Kohl's.....nothing seems to work. I will tell you I have recently discovered 2 years ago that iron on patches on the inside helps it so much. I went almost a year before I bought jeans. My son loves to play soccer and baseball so sliding on his knees is a priority in his life. LOL!! It is now to the point that he is out growing them instead of them getting holes first. Good luck to ya!!

Sears has a Kids Club Program - no charge to join. If the cloths wear out before they grow out of them, Sears replaces them. You also earn coupons toward future purchases.

I am experiencing the same problem with my 6 yr. old boy's pants and jeans. In the last two months, I have had to replace four pairs of khaki pants (school uniform) and one pair of jeans. I have tried just about every brand as well, including Gap. I don't know if you shop at Sears, but apparently they have a program called KidVantage Club. You can sign up at any retail register at Sears to enroll. You will automatically receive special discounts throughout the year, and every time you spend $100.00 on kids/infant clothing and/or kids/infant shoes, you will receive a 15% off coupon for your next purchase (The coupon prints out on your receipt immediately.) The best part, though, is the "wear out warranty." If your child wears out his clothing and shoes before he outgrows them, then Sears will replace those items for free! That includes holes in jeans and pants!! I hope this helps.

I have the same problem! Maybe you could have a couple of pairs of "play jeans", and some "good jeans". It may mean more changing of clothes, but if they take the good ones off right after school, they could wear them again if they're not visibly dirty. Then just tell them that if they tear up their good jeans you'll buy the girly, flowery patches to put on the knees of those!! ;)

Good Morning D.. I am a mother of 4, 3 of which are boys (9-12yrs). I have found Levi's to be the best. BUT there are different thicknesses in their jeans. Make sure what you are buying are the thicker jeans. The thinner ones ran holes within 3 or 4 weeks. I've had the thicker ones (some of which I bought second hand from a garage sale) that have lasted 2 years - through 2 of my boys. It is rare I can get a pair to last through 3 boys because they are all three very much boys. They love to play alot outside. Hope this helps! Have a great day!

My oldest daughter has the same problem and no matter what brand we buy her it happens. The only advice I can give you is to buy patches. I actually put her patches on the inside and every now and then put a decorative one on the outside (the inside ones are less noticable). Of course she is a girl and they don't make many decorative ones for boys now a days. This seems to help some. We gave up buying the really expensive jeans until she learns to stay off of the floor and her knees. Good Luck.

We have four boys and a girl and I have a great tip for you. When our little guys were in that stage I went to a sewing store or Wal-mart and bought these iron in patches. they are about 3 in. by 5 in. You iron them on the inside of the jeans right where they always blow out the knee. This reinforces that area and makes it last so much longer!
Best wishes, K. W.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with that problem. The school uniform my son wears is the worst. They seem to tear at the sides and knees. It was getting expensive buying new pants. I now sew them up and mend them the best I can.

I ended doing the iron on patch on the inside of the pants and that seems to help.

Thanks to the other mom about the Sears program, I'll have to look into it.

Sears has a great free program. It is called Kidvantage. They will replace any of the jeans purchased at their stores for the exact same size. Their brand toughskins - do no need a receipt. All others need a receipt to prove they were purchased at a Sears store. So, if you have buy a pair of Levi's in a size 6 - with your receipt they will give you another pair of Levi's in a size 6 at no cost. I ask my family to buy my boys jeans at Sears and then ask them for the receipts, so I can capitalize on this great program. I have done it on my oldest pants so that when my youngest is in that size he has a new pair of pants. It is free to sign up. Good Luck.

Instead of trying to find a brand that's more durable than others; take the old pairs of jeans, and cut them into patches about a five inch square. Get you some of that fabric glue or adhesive for aplying patches without stitching. Turn the new jeans inside out, and secure the patches to the inside of the jeans knees, turn them right side out, and wash. That should give a longer life to all their jeans as it will stregthen the material in the area that wears out the fastest. It works realy well.

Yeah! I'm with you sister!!! My oldest boys are 7 & 9 and I have the same problem. However, I didn't get mad at the jeans, I got mad at my boys. Well, sorta. I keep asking them if they REALLY need to play on their knees so much. I hound them every once in a while on how they play. But I'm going to say it . . . ready? . . . here goes . . . "Boys Will Be Boys!" :) But hey, if you ever find a pair of jeans that's tough enough, please do tell. I just went to my boys' room and counted the "Holy Jeans" pile on the floor in the corner of their room. (I keep saving them in case I want them to use a bad pair for something.) I counted 10!!! Ten pair of waisted jeans! One of them was a new blue color too. I'm in the same boat you are in. Please pass on the news if you hear of a jean tough enough for our boys.
Thanks and Good Luck!

Go to Sears and buy US Polo. The are a name brand that I think some people buy to look like they have money but not all of us. I buy US Polo for all three of my boys. They look brand new every day no matter how many times I wash them or they wear them. Sears has them for the same price you would buy a crapper pair of Walmart jeans. Southpole is good too, but US Polo fits better. Sears has the kidvantage so every $100.00 you spend on your phone number you get 15% off your next purchase. I learned my lesson on Walmart clothes 3 years ago when I started working at Sears. I relized I was wasting my money before on junk. I now buy clothes that don't fade, don't seem like the material is disolving in the wash. Check them out! I do buy Target clothes for my 7 year old daughter, but she isn't h*** o* stuff like the boys. Man after reading evryones response about Sears, I'm not sure why the stores are on the verge of closing due to no traffic. I'm not just saying Sears cause I work there though, I say it as a mom of 6 that knows...good luck

I have found Gap and Tommy jeans to be the most durable. However I also use Old Navy jeans and use the iron on patches on them. The patches help- but only somewhat- my boys have still have had holes in the knees of the jeans- and then the patch (which is a different color) shows through and can look tacky. Finally I decided that they need to have 1 nice pair for when we go out- so they have a pair that they put on when we leave and take off when we get home- then they wear their play jeans other than when we're out. This seems to help a little for us... Good luck!!
