IUD Question

I have had three IUDs placed in my life. My experience has been very positive overall. I think they are great as far as ease of use, fertility immediately after removal, and comfort. I have to admit, the first few weeks after having them placed is not the best (you do bleed some), but having them placed has not been too bad. If you have an experienced GYN, it should be a piece of cake. I had mine placed by 3 different people, and had three different experiences. Overall, I think it is definitely worth it.

I have the IUD and love it. The procedure is maybe 2 minutes and you have a little cramping afterwards. Nothing more than the first day of your cycle. Good Luck:)

It is a little painful but only during the procedure. And that only lasts like 5 minutes. The rest of the day you may feel a little crampy but by the next day you'll feel fine. (Or at least I did) I believe you are doing the right thing. I would get mine again in a minute. They are so convenient. No shots, no condoms, no pills, no side effects. And after I have my next and last child I will have one put in again. Good luck. I think you'll love it!

Everyone is correct, the installation is slightly painful for a very short while. My doctor told me to give it 6 months and it would lessen the problems I was having with excessive bleeding and cramping. NOT! I have read many comments from those who have one and some have a great experience and some do not. Good luck!

When my IUD was put in, it wasn't that bad. I had it put in 6 weeks after I had my 2nd c-section. It was really only unpleasant for a few seconds, and I didn't feel anything the rest of the day.

When I had it removed, it hurt a little more, but again, only for a very, very short time. Both times it just felt like a really fast, really bad cramp. I did flinch once when they took it out, but the pain was gone really fast.

I will definitely be getting another one, those few seconds of pain are worth not having to take birth control pills for 5 years.

hi! i got the Mirena non-hormone IUD when my daughter was six or seven weeks old. I love it, I have yet to have a cycle, and i have had no problems with it. (she's almost 19 months old now). I like mine, but I have a friend who had the same one and had several side effects from it and had it removed. So I suppose it just depends on the person. But, for me, it's been a GREAT choice.

Mine wasn't painful getting put in (October 2005) but I'd just had a baby the previous July 2005. I had complications with the IUD and ended up with an infection and had to get it taken out February 2007. Wasn't painful coming out either. I was very dissappointed to have to get it out b/c that was the easiest method of b.c. I am still all for it, my body just doesn't agree!

It was not painful for me. Only uncomfortable. No problems at all. I love it!

Don't be scared. I am a very vocal person, as well... and it didn't hurt when I got my IUD in... it has been the best choice I have ever made considering birth control. I got the mirena... and it's great. I have had it for almost a year now ... and I won't ever take the pill again!! It took about 10 minutes to put it in and I didn't feel a thing, honestly. I don't even bleed anymore during that time of the month - it's great!!!

I've had mine for 2 years and LOVE it. I didn't think it felt much different than your yearly PAP test- the doctor will use the same basic tools. I have the 5 year one, however, and my doctor said (and her nurse said seperately) that the 10 year one is more painful with cramping and stuff. I did spot a tiny bit, and it felt like mild cramps the first 12 hours. After that- nothing. My doctor even recommended getting 2 5 years ones rather than a 10 year, due to the bad cramping that can come from the longer one. (more hormones in it, I think) I've encouraged 3 different friends to have one done, and they all loved it too- it's no biggie, and I'm a HUGE pain baby! Take a couple of tylenol before you go in, just so it's already in your system.

It was so easy! I felt it when they put it in. But, it was only like a second. I've had papercuts that hurt worse. So, I wouldn't let the pain aspect sway you. I'm so glad that I got it. There was bleeding and spotting for the first month. That didn't bother me at all as I was 6 weeks post partum anyway. Also, I was paying $45 a month for Nuvaring before we decided to get pregnant. My insurance paid 100% for my IUD. I have been told that my insurance does not pay for removal which I think is about $200-$300. I plan to have my IUD for 3-4 years. So, it was actually a wise financial choice for us also. Congrats on your new baby. My baby was born March 7th, and I also am a 1st time mom. Good luck!

I know I'm not really answering your question, but there is a great book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility." It basically presents the fertility awareness method of birth control(ie natural). If you don't want to do the contraceptive thing, this method may be what you are looking for. It does take some effort on your part to follow it, however. It may also help you conceive when the time comes. I recommend the book even to those who prefer contraception because I learned so much about the female reproductive system. It was very disturbing to me that I didn't already know these things and wasn't taught or told these things by anyone.

Don't let your friends scare you! It is not bad at all. After giving birth it will be a breeze! I had an IUD put in after my son, and it didn't hurt. The doctor warned there might be some cramping, but it didn't last more than a few seconds. The whole procedure is very quick! The only problem I had with my IUD is very irregular, heavy periods. The plus side is that when you get it removed you don't feel a thing! Good luck-not that you need it!

I hope that you aren't getting the Mirena...I had a terrible experience. Good luck and I hope that your experience was more positive than mine.

I used a Mirena IUD between my first and second as well as between my second and third. I'm a big whimp, and I can promise you that it isn't anything more than a pap smear as far as the pain goes. Its best if you're either still bleeding from childbirth, or if you are on your cycle. It will go in much more easily. Especially compared to the childbirth you just went through, this is a piece of cake! Good luck!

I had a Mirena IUD put in and it wasn't painful. Just a little cramping. However, I had problems afterwards. My cramps during my menstrual period became much worse and sometimes I would have cramping between periods. After paying $700+ of my own money I had it taken out after 7 months and I felt so much better. So you may want to discuss this with your doctor. My doctor said it was not common, but you never know how many women live with it and don't report it.
Just be aware.

I have an IUD and basically it felt like mild contractions. There was a heavy period immediatly following so make sure you have some pads. They say no to tampons for the furst few weeks. I also did have the side effect of hair loss. I was losing my hair in huge clumps. My husband hated it because he does floors in our house. I had it done in February and the hair loss stopped about a month ago. My hair is growing back, you can see all the new hairs on the top. I hate it. Makes my hair look frizzy. It can also cause a lack of drive in bed. Thats another not to nice thing. I'm thinking of having my taken out. Personally, I wish I had gone back the pill.

It does hurt a little going in. It felt like the doc was pinching me real hard. When you were having infertility issues, did you ever have a hysterosalpingogram? I did and it felt like that to me, except it is over really quickly and the hystero... lasted a long time. I would ask the nurse if you should take a pain pill before. My doc did not offer one, but a friends doc did. Just remember that it will be very quick and it is worth it in my opinion. I haven't had a period in a year!!!!!

My sister got one about a week ago. She said it was uncomfortable, like a pap smear. But about a day later, she said she was cramping and didn't feel good. I mean she was up and doing things, but she said it felt like she was starting her period, and having strong cramps. Just to let you know i plan to get one also. And i did read that a doctor might ask you to take Aleve, or just some pain medicine before you come in. I thought that was a good idea. Let me know how it goes please!!

Oh are you getting the 10 year copper one, or the 5 year with hormones?

Hi, I just have to tell you that having one has been one of the best things Iv'e ever done for myself. If you went through fertility treatments and labor, this is a walk in the park. There is a little pressure and a tiny bit of cramping, but I didn't need to take any pain killers afterward. I love mine, I had my daughter in Jan, had a mirena put in in march and have only had one period. It is great! The only bad thing so far has not been on my part, but my husband complains that it "sticks" him, I think that if they had not cut the string so short, it might have made a difference! I highly recommend them, and don't be scared, it's not bad at all.

My friends sd the same thimg about the pain. My dr gave me a local so I had NO PAIN WHAT SO EVER; not even hours after. I have now had it for about a year and a half and life is so good. Now I do hear that it hurts to have it removed but I had a friend that had hers removed and sd she didn't feel a thing.

Girl don't sweat it I a scary cat myself I hate needles or antthing associated with pain...but I've had my IUD in for 2 years now and when I first got it it was a 5 min. procedure and not painful at all. there was a little discomfort really more like cramps but its not bad at all.
