I had Mirena. Yes, I had more cramping while I had the IUD. I also had a hard time sleeping on my side and sleeping period. I had more headaches and felt more uncomfortable. You are also at risk for blood clots and my family has a history of blood clots. I should never have been given the IUD. If it doesn't get better, I would have it taken out. I only had it in for a few months and then it was taken out.

Hey A.
I have been on my Iud since 12/06. at first I did experience the same things, but it will pass once your body get's comfortable accepting the new drug. Now, all my periods are lite and barely noticable.
But, do consult your doctor, only he or she can tell you really whats going on.

The long period may just be a side effect of the IUD. However, the cramping, that happened to me and I nearly passed out in the shower and passed a large blood clot; I felt for a string check and I was expelling the IUD (I could feel half the device already out). Sorry if it's TMI, but I just say that because you may want to do a check and see if it feels like it's in the right place and make an appt with your doctor.

You may be expelling your IUD. I have seen this happen, at any time after insertion. And I have inserted a lot of IUD's! Or, as others suggested, it may have moved. You need to be checked by your MD/Nurse Practitioner. No sex until it has been checked, most docs will see you the cay you call with IUD probs. Does the string feel longer, or can you feel the tip of the device? Long crampy periods are common with IUD, Good luck! MaryB, Women's Health

Yes! Those are just a couple of the side effects of the IUD. You could experience each month during your cycle or just a few months out of the year. It's normal.

You should definitely go see your doctor. I had a similar situation (although I waited a LONG time to go into the doctor) and found out that my IUD had moved and was MIA. I had to get an x-ray so they could find it and it had to be surgically removed. Not saying this is what has happened to you, but it is best to go to the doctor and find out as soon as possible. Best of luck to you!

Do you have the IUD with or without hormones? I have the one without so my periods are more "natural". For the first 12-18 months nothing was regular. Now I have a med to heavy period and some discomfort for 5-6 days then stop for two then on again for 1. Weird, I know. A lot of gals who flow really heavy need the hormones to control their cycles. Good luck.

I would call your doctor. I remember being told it will take a few months for your body to adjust. (I think they said up tp 6 months) It may have moved.
