Scar on Face
Has anyone ever tried an OTC scar medicine? My 6 year old daughter has a scar on her face, thanks to a toy and her sister. I have healed the cut as best as I can, but she now she is left with a scar. I know they make OTC medicine, but wanted to check to see if anyone has used these? Do they work? Which one do you like best? Thanks for your help!

I use vitamin E GELcaps. I buy the Walgreens brand and since they are gelcaps I simply squeeze out the actual liquid and apply it to the scar on a daily basis. You can also try Aloe Vera from the plant and place the slimy liquid on the scar. It works very well.

On my own scars, rather than a medication, I have used cocoa butter and vitamin E. While the cocoa butter certainly helped to soften the scar tissue, I found that the vitamin e was the most helpful in reducing the appearance of the scars. I used to buy the vitamin E capsules and just prick a small hole into it and apply it on a regular basis. You just need to be diligent in its application, and don't expect results overnight or even in a week! Keep it up and eventually you will see results. Given your daughter's age, it will probably be much faster than on my own tough, 36 year old weathered skin! :)

At her age, you can use something besides the otc scar medicine. If she is fair, I would put sunscreen on her face every day. But to minimize the scar - go to the health food store and ask for a highly concentrated vitamin e topical. Use that in addition to pure cocoa butter - you can buy a stick of cocoa butter most stores. I had a bad burn on my hand and this worked wonders, I have to actually really look to see where the burn was.
Also, I've found using the cocoa butter at night instead of my usual night cream actually moisturizes my skin 100% better. And it's way cheaper.

My daughter had 3 surgical procedures on her cheek to remove a nevus. We used Children's Mederma for awhile but my daughter didn't like the smell. Her plastic surgeon highly recommended that we just massage her cheek for about 5-10 mins a day with Aquaphor; the skin does not absorb this gel. He also highly recommended that we protect her scar with sunblock everyday. I have been doing this religiously for 6 years and her scar is barely visible...and her scar is due to surgery! I'm sure if you follow these same procedures, your daughter's scar will be non-existant in no time!!! Good luck!

I have had people get good results with scars with Shaklee's C&E Repair cream. I have used it on my 2 yr old granddaughter. Because Shaklee is so meticulous about product quality, I don't have any concerns about using what I use on my face on her. I would be happy to furnish more information or send you some samples to try if you are interested.

If it is a raised scar the silicone patches can work wonders. I bought the CVS brand and cut them in half, more bang for your buck - depending on size of scar, plus they are reusable and will still stick through a shower. I use them everytime I have to have my cardiac device (pacemaker type device) replaced and they work every time. As far as getting rid of the 'skin scar or discoloration, light or dark' I think you're best bet is to massage the scar with Vitamin E oil or cocoa butter like the others suggested and make sure you use sun block constantly. I have used Mederma in the past, but not sure if the product did more of the work or the massaging of the scar actually did.

My sister used Mederma on my niece's burn scar a couple of years after it happened. There has been quite an improvement after just a month or so. I know there is also another brand that works really well but cannot remember the name.

When my daughter had surgery, the pediatric dermatologist at Children's Hospital recommended Mederma. You have to be meticulous about it. I would say it helped moderately, but as another poster mentioned, I think the massage is as important as the cream. It made the scar less raised, bumpy. You can get the kids version which changes color when you have rubbed it in enough. Visit http://www.mederma.com/ for a $2.00 coupon.

My little person had 2 facial surgeries and the plastic surgeon after the final reconstruction recommended MEDERMA. It is sold over the counter and a little expensive but the different between that scar and a scar on his foot that we left untreated are amazing. Hope it helps!
