Is Tanning While Pregnant Safe?

Now I am talking a spray tan, is that safe while pregnant? What about self-tanning lotions? Any recommendations for prepping this pasty white body for a couple of April and May weddings? Quick tanning solutions?

What can I do next?

It's safest to be pasty. However, if you are concerned about having a bit of color for weddings, I would suggest just grabbing a few minutes here and there by sitting in the backyard on sunny days. Personally, I would just buy a dress or outfit that covers you up.

In my opinion, having a healthy baby is more important then have a 'Healthy' glow of a tan.
(I put healthy in quotes because there's nothing healthy about getting a tan)

Using a tanning bed is NOT safe during pregnancy. DO NOT DO IT. This advice was given to me by multiple doctors. Also, do you really want to expose yourself to the additional chemicals found in those self-tanning lotions? I'd be afraid that might hurt the baby too.

I'm sure you would like to have a cute tan for those weddings, but why risk having a cute tan for unknown chemicals in spray tan or lotion. Obviously tanning beds are HARMFUL even when you are not pregnant. Spray tans/lotions have a lot of chemicals in them that your body absorbs, which gives that cute glow. I would not risk any unknowns in these self tanning lotions just to get that next glow. Why expose your baby to any chemicals at all during this time? I'm fair skinned too, so just suck it up while you are pregnant & I'm sure people are going to notice the glow you have from pregnancy over a spray/self-tan lotion.

I have wondered the same thing.. my doc said hold off on the self tanners while pregnant, but I have to say I've cheated a few times and used the "hint of color" lotions (like jergens) b/c we went to FL. (that was in the beginning of my 2nd tri, which I'm still in) My sister-in-law did it in her first pregnancy (tanners and spray tanned), as well as went to the tanning beds and has a very smart healthy 2 year old... I think anything in moderation would be OK. I believe the research on it says there's been no conclusive studies on the effects to the baby. I plan to lay out this summer when I want a little color and maybe use the Jergens--I almost feel like laying out is safer b/c its more natural and women have been doing it all over the world since the beginning of time. Hope this helps! If you decide no color at all, I think that white is still in too:)

I am 26 weeks prego with my second and for my 1st pregnancy i spray tanned a few times.. and my son has turned out just fine...this pregnancy i went to go spray tan and the girl at the front desk said something that I never thought about....every time you spray tan not only are you absorbing the chemicals thru your skin.... you are inhaling the mist when you breath...But, the girl at the front desk said that a fellow employee who was pregnant employee's doctor said its safer to lay in the bed and tan then it is to get the spray tan. Now I just go outside if I want sun or a touch of tanning lotion just for my legs...... No matter which device you choose there is always SOMEONE who says you shouldn't do it because of the risk...I say moderation in whatever you choose. Good luck!!

No one is going to notice if you are tan, they are going to notice how beautiful you are pregnant. Don't worry about it, just pick out a cute outfit, accesorize, and have fun!

Glad you asked for advice before you went out and did it! Spray tanning and other self tanners are not good for you or anyone else. I know how you feel about wanting some color and that's why I use botanically based products for before/after sun tanning and an awesome product that is a great self tanner that I used for the past several summers. No chemicals, dyes, fragrances, etc. in any of the products. Plus they have an amazing baby line too. Take care of yourself and your little one growing. People don't understand that it's the long term effects that these products produce. You may not see anything now, but what about 10-20+ years when you have unusual symptoms - even cancer?

Anyway, I would love to share what I have learned with you. It is by far the best product that I have used. I used those others many years ago and literally "paid the price". Your satisfaction is guaranteed! Can't lose on that!

I have been told no by my OB to many chemicals that they are unsure of. His advice get in the sun as often as possible. Let it happen naturally but be careful of burning or getting to hot. I would talk to your doctor and see what they have to say.
