Is It Just PMS?

I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing. And if you have, what it was. I am having some "woman" issues. My period has been like clockwork since I first started. I have been on birth control off and on since age 18. I am now 26. I have had two kids and went back on the pill after nursing my daughter. So about three years straight I have been on them.

The issue is that in the last few months things have been getting weird. Well, actually for about six or seven months I have had what I like to call a "two hour period." It is kinda like when you feel like you are going to sneeze and then it goes away. Just a little of that old blood stuff. (sorry to be so graphic)

In Feb. I barely had a period and thought maybe I was pregnant somehow. But I took a test and it was negative. In March I had more of a regular period that lasted three days but it came three days later than usual. Today I am about a week away from starting and I feel so crampy and my back hurts. It almost feels like the first part of labor feels when it's all achey and crampy. I have had some crampy feelings for about a week. This also happened last month, only not as pronounced.

I have never suffered from PMS symptoms before, but I am unsure what else it may be. I don't know if it's a cyst or maybe my pills need to be changed. I hope it's not something serious. But from the things I have found online, my symptoms don't show any red flags.

I am going to see the doctor if things don't improve, but I was just wondering if you had any ideas as to what I might be dealing with. Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone. I DID see the doctor. I knew I was going to, but I was interested in getting some ideas from you all as to what it might be just so I would know what possibilities to expect. So far they haven't found anything wrong. I am scheduled for an ultrasound next week just to check things out better and I am waiting for some blood test reults for thyroid etc. So chances are, I just need to do someting different with my birth control. I would love to go off the pill totally but my husband doesn't want more kids, and I am one of those women who gets pregnant the first month off the pill. He refuses any "snip-snip" procedures and we can't really afford an IUD at this time so I am not sure what to do about it. Thanks again for the great input. It was ALL very helpful and informative.

I got the blood work results back and my thyroid and my prolactin were tested. Both were normal. I had an ultrasound yesterday (internal and external) and should hear back about those results tomorrow. So right now, the jury is still out.

J.,

I would definately talk to your doctor. I did find after being on certain type of pill for awhile I needed something stronger. You may jsut need to change pills.

It could be any number of things...some you have to learn to live with and others need specific testing to diagnose. Whatever you do, I urge you to see your doc. For me, oral birth control pills caused a fibroid tumor that had to be surgically removed thru my abdomen. Now I have to have children via C-sec because of the uterine incision. Now Im not saying that is what your problem is, just demonstrating that you really need a doc at this point.

I would suggest you see a doctor. It could be alot of things, cycles do change due to age, stress, the fact you've been on the pill. It also could be cysts, or even fibroids. It actually sounds like what I went through and it turned out to uterine fibroids. I have to say, I was totally relieved when I finally seen the doctor and we worked this out. I also had alot of scar tissue from my c-section and tubal pregnancy from years earlier which contributed to this. There are many options but you first need to know the cause. What I do find weird is if you're still on the pill, that usually regulates you so seeing the doctor is really the only thing that will mind to rest.
Best of luck:)

Hi J.!

I was always very regular before I too had children. I never suffered from PMS, cramps, or mood swings...After having my last child and resuming The Pill, I noticed I was not myself emotionally, I discontinued using The Pill and my emotions went back to normal. Also, even though my periods are again like clock-work, some months they are very normal and other months my flow is very hard...My Gyno said this is very typical after having children...I would suggest that you go to your Doc and make sure everything is OK...Good Luck!

I am a mother of two and after my second child I started to have simular problems and I once thought I was pregnet again to and took the test and it was negative. I went to my doctor and she did complete blood work on me and found out my DHEA levels (it's like your mother hormone or main hormone) were at 1,700 and should not have been more than 400. I had to see a specialist for it and he put me on some medicine for about three months and I've been fine every since. And it's been 4 or 5 years. They will ask you questions like do you have hair growing in places that it only grows on men, because your testostorone level might be to high. Please have the doctor do a complete blood work on you and they should find any problems you may have just from that.

Hi there,

My period started slowing down (and eventually having old blood and disappearing) about 2 years ago. It turned out that I had desperately low thyroid and needed medication. I would strongly suggest going to a trusted physician and getting to the bottom of your problem. This doesn't sound like pms, but instead, something of a medical issue.

Take care and best wishes to you~

I was having some of the same issues. I did go to the doctor and talked to him regarding this issue. He told me, "I am sorry to tell you, but, you are getting older. And as you become older, your symptoms and your periods will change."

I would go to the doctor, and wouldn't wait to see if it gets better or worse. It may be nothing - but it's been going on for a few months now, it's not going to get better. After I had my second daughter I had a lot of problems with my cycle - at first it wouldn't stop, was bleeding constantly. After about 2 months of this (and 2 doctors appointments) my doctor did put me back on the pill (I had a tubligation). I stayed on that for a year, went off at her direction and for the first six months was always late. We did a pregnancy test every month, consulted both doctors and it was determined that my body was just trying to figure out the cycle without the pill telling it what to do (in simple terms). Now, I'm back to 4 weeks and 3 days between cycles - and have been for a year, like clockwork. It might take a couple months to figure out what is going on, but sooner is better than later. Medical websites are NOT the best source for information.

Hi J........So story sounds so close to what I am dealing with. I was told at first that is was pre-PMS and I was stocked cause I am only 28. But after blood work and test and keeping a log as to how I feel and when they have told me it is my thyroid. I had no idea. From what they told me my thyroid is not working probably. Within a 4 week period my TSH levels went from being very low to very high. They can't seem to understand why. Right now all they are having me do is get rest and exercise and they plan on checking my period again in 4 weeks. See I just had a baby 8 months ago so they think that is my problem. But I my have to go on some kind of thyroid meds to control it. You should go and get it checked out. Have a good day and good luck. D.

Are you trying to lose weight? I find that mine almost goes away (or I get a 2Hr. period) when I am actively losing weight and on the pill.
The other posters have brought up other issues that are worth looking into. Fibroids and cysts and thyroid issues are not to be taken lightly. Also, since your cycle changes as you age, you may need a medication adjustment.

I went thru the same thing. I called my doctor after my peridos were one week late on the pills. she did the pelvic examination and felt a cyst on my left ovary. I went for the Ultra sound and they confirmed the small 1.2cm cyst. I was also very crampy. I would say just go and see your doctor... Hope you feel better soon.

Sounds like an early change. I'd see the gynecologist.

But please be careful as far as putting hormones in you. Maybe you just need to take a rest from the pill? Your body may be trying to tell you something. Maybe clean your system for a while.
But see the doctor.
Best wishes
