go with the suction cup option . also they make the plates with a rounded edge that the baby can use when trying to get food on the plate. they make cute little plate/cup/bowl sets with the suction cup thing. makes it so much easier.

When is whenever you want, but this age seems fine. Advice is plastic! :-) You will be picking the plate up from the floor.

I agree with Many and Sherry. Does your daughter eat with utensils? If not or not good I would start with the suction bowls first then move on the plate with the rounded edge. She might think the bowl on her tray is a toy and try to play with it at first. Plus the bowl makes it easy for them to scoop the food. Then once she gets that then you can remove the rounded edge and she will eat from a regular plate. I think the gerber self feed starter set is the one that seperates so they can graduate to the different levels. But the suction part on it sucks!

I agree with Sue, make sure you use plastic! They also sell plates with suction cups on the bottom so you can stick it right to the HC tray and it won't go anywhere :) Best wishes!

I started using a plate with my son when I was able to get him NOT to throw his food on the floor!!! I believe the ones I use are Munchkin brand. I really like them because they are plastic but the bottom has rubber on it so the plate doesn't slide all over the place.
