Infant Teething Problem

I have a 7 month old daughter, Madison. When she was 4 months old she cut 2 teeth at the same time. Ever since then, we thought she wasn't going to get anymore for a long time. Now at 7 months, she has just cut 2 more teeth on top and a 3rd one just broke through the skin today. Her top gums are so swollen. She really isn't complaining about them. I did noticed today, though, while feeding her breakfast, that she was grinding her new baby teeth. She will not take a pacifier for more than 5 minutes and she don't like her teethers too much. My question is... DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN GET HER FROM GRINDING HER TEETH? I do not want her to start having such dental problems at such an early age with the grinding. Thank you in advance for your help.

What can I do next?

My son grinds his teeth too, and he's 3 years old now. He started around 6 months or so. His pediatrician, Dr Kappes, said that it's just something kids do when they are small. He said it usually stops after a few years and that it's not really strong enough grinding to cause problems. When my son went to the dentist, the dentist said the same thing. Hope that helps!

I have a 5mth old who also started teething at the end of his 4mths and now he's 5mth almost 6 and both teeth on the bottom has cut threw. he is pretty much like your baby. Happy, and don't want anything but his fingers to chew on. I didn't realize that he was teething until one day he started smiling and I saw two white pegs cutting throw. I called my mom and she told me that I need to put some Orajel on his gums. Orajel only numbs the gums but he stops chewing on his fingers. so maybe if you put some on her gums she will stop grinding her teeth.

My baby is 14 months and he is still getting teeth,he's battling with one now in the back that just wont seem to come through the skin.Mine son also doesnt take a paci,he'll chew on it for a min but thats it.He also doesnt like the teething rings. But he does like to sick and bite on a cold clean wet rag sometimes. Also give her some tylenol,or atleast thats what I use and it works for me.I've never noticed my children grind their teeth except when my 4 yr old and his dad are asleep. They both will talk in their sleep and my husband more than my son will grind their teeth. At this young of an age, I wouldnt worry about it,things come and go this early in life for them.

My youngest son of 3 boys grinded his teeth as well. His first tooth came in at 4 months and now has all his teeth at 18 months with the exception of his 2 year molars. I asked our pediatric dentist and he said it was normal for the to be grinding while teething and for me not to worry due to them just being baby teeth. I nursed him until he was 9 months and it made me nervous...in fear that he would try to grind them while he was eating. He quit grinding his teeth withing 4 or 5 months. I used the teething tablets that dissolve in seconds...loved them! I hope that this eases your worries a little. Mother of 3 boys and wife to a wonderful man, T.

I know when my daughter was an infant she too grinded her teeth. My dentist at the time said it is normal because they are learning they have new things in their mouth. I wouldn't worry a great deal about it since this is all new to her with having something in her mouth. It's good that she won't take a paci because I'm having issues with trying to get the paci away from my son. He loves it too much. Hope this info helps.

Hi C....I totally feel your pain. My son cut his first two teeth at 3 months and hasn't had a break since. He went thru a long stage of grinding his teeth and now does it every once in a while. It's perfectly normal. I think sometimes Conner did it just because he liked the noise or the way it felt. He recently saw the pediatric dentist and has no issues at all even with all that grinding. We started using adult strength orajel when the baby orajel starting to not be strong enough, his doctor said it was okay of course...we also use Tylenol or Motrin when he's having a hard time. He also likes to chew on a cold take and toss sppon mostly because he can get it back to his molars. I hope this helps a little.

Although your dentist will probably tell you that it is normal and that Madison is ok, make sure you tell her dentist at her next appointment.

And no, 7 months is NOT too young for a dentist visit. Your insurance should cover a visit every 6 months, starting with their first tooth. Cavities at 2 years old at a first visit, even with good insurance, is expensive--I know!
