My 19 Month Daughter Is Grinding Her Teeth Really Loudly

The other day I was in the kitchen I heard this loud cracking/popping noise coming from the living room and I went to see what it was and my daughter was on the couch grinding her teeth. I told her not to do that because she could break them. That was the first time I had ever heard her do that. Then last night she started doing it again. I am worried that it might crack her teeth. A friend of mine said that her son did the same thing when his teeth on the side started coming in. Should I take her to the doctor to see if it is a problem? Has anyone else experienced this with their toddler?

What can I do next?

Hi I am a dental hygienist and have been for the last ten years...we have parents ask this very same question all the time...there is nothing you can do to stop her from grinding and it shouldn't do any harm other than they will wear down over time...by the time you see any wear it should be about time for her adult teeth to come in...as long as she is not complaining about any pain or acting like she is having pain she should be ok...but if you want a dentist to look at them that would be fine too

My 6 year old just started doing the same thing. It was driving me bananas. I happened to have a dentist appt about 2 weeks after he started doing it and asked my dentist. He said that it is perfectly normal for them to do that and that it will not hurt baby teeth at all but to let him know if he did it after all his permanent teeth came in and we would address it.

My son did the same thing at the same age. He will be 3 yrs next month.

As long as I was freaking out over it, he kept doing it. When my husband and I learned to ignore it.... he quit.

She is probably having some itchy gums or just figuring out new ways to move her mouth, and may be just interested in the sound it makes.

I would talk to a dentist about it because my mother told me I grinded my teeth a lot and what she did was toward the back of the jaw line, where you can feel your jaw connect to your cheekbone massage it in a circular pattern. I did this when i was sleeping and this is what she would do to stop me, but I have not quit completely. I still grind my teeth and my husband will actually do that from time to time. I would talk to the dentist about it though because you dont want your daughter to keep doing it, It hasnt harmed me. I have straight teeth, neve had braces, but sometimes my jaw will hurt and it is bc I was grinding them in my sleep. THey have those mouth sleep guards now but probably not for a 19 month old. Just so you know my circumstance. Wasnt bad or good for me.

My stepson used to grind his teeth all the time. It was so bad that I couldn't sleep in the same room with him even on vacation. His dentist told his mom that it was fine while he had baby teeth...that they don't have large groves in them and they slide around easily. The dentist said that after he got his permanent teeth that if he continued to grind that would be a problem but that he would most likely quit. Sure enough he is 10 years old now and I haven't heard him grind in years.

Hi, Have you noticed if she does this in her sleep?
If it has happened only a couple of times and you point it out to her it should stop quickly. Is she cutting teeth and it just feels good, then try remedies for that. Molars (back teeth) are hard to cut.
Do you ever hear her jaw pop? A sound like when your knee or something pops. I suffer with TMJ, I grind my teeth when I sleep and my jaws sometimes pop when I open and close my mouth widely. The dentist made a splint for me to wear when I sleep (sort of like the mouthpiece football players wear). MASSAGE in the correct area will help if it is TMJ. My jaw locked in a wide open position while having my teeth cleaned. I was quite frightened. They told me if this happened again to get them not go to the emergency room. They said in most hopsitals they would not know what to do to unlock the jaw. I would see my childs doctor and also call a dentist if the behavior continues after watching closely. Ask her questions like does it feel good, do you like the noise it makes, does something hurt.
Best wishes,
R.

My kids both did this too when their teeth came in. It is very annoying. Try getting some of those baby teething toys that you put in the fridge to keep cold. My kids have some triangle shaped ones that can get a little further back in their mouths. It will give them something safe to chew on and you won't have to listen to the grinding. Good luck.
