My daughter is should be in the 11 grade this year at the high school but now is having to do independent studies threw a charter school due to her failing grades. We found out she has ADD so that is part of her problem. I am a stay home mom of 4 children. I am not very happy about her having to do this but she has to make up so many credits to be able to get back on track to go back to the high school. I don't know much about this and was wondering is there any moms out there who can help me with any advice on this.

What can I do next?

Just to follow-up on another post, it's not a "bad" thing to find out your daughter has ADD -- It's actually a great thing! Now you know a reason why she has had such a difficult time in school. There are techniques she can learn that will help her focus. I am a teacher, and would be happy to share some ideas with you. Just contact me through this site, and I will pass them on to you. The charter school should also have a teacher/consultant who can help you. As far as the charter school goes, just remember that our "typical" public school set-up doesn't always work for every child. Your daughter *may* find that she likes the independent study structure better than public school.

My brother had the same thing happen (roughly 8 years ago). He actually excelled with that type of program, and got his GED early. She may do the same! I don't know the details of it, personally, but I just wanted to tell you that it's not necessarily a bad thing (even though there's a "bad" reason behind it - getting kicked out) - just a different route to the same ends. Make sure she knows that :o)

Hi I'm also a mom in Murrieta, with 4 kids 3 are still at home. 17, 16, 13. All I can say is support her with her studies. My 17 had to go to summer school to make up credits also, she did not like it, but when it was over she was happy. remember the road to success is not easy, but we as parents need to show our kids that when they make mistakes they have to know that there are concequences. My kids are in a charter school called Temecula Prepetory School in the French valley area. It's a great school I'm glad that I made the move to change them from a traditional high school. So what I' m saying is ask questions , go to the school board ,and make sure she is getting everything she needs .

C.,
My best friend is going through the same issue. She failed 10th grade and now is going on IS to get caught up. I have been home schooling my daughter since 6th grade and she is now going into a 50/50% charter high school. I think this is a great option for your daughter to get caught up. I don't know what IS program you are going through, but Julian Charter is a great one.... I just suggest you stay on top of her school work and make sure she understand her work and if not, asks a lot of questions. There is a lot of people that want to see her succeed and she will not be alone! Good luck!
