Immunizations/Autism Risk

I have been reading about the controversy about if certain vaccinations cause autism. The CDC says that there is no conclusive evidence that they do. However, in one lawsuit the US government conceded that the MMR vaccination that one girl received did cause autism but they said it was due to a genetic problem that she had. The rate for autism is now 1 in 150 children where it use to be 1 in 10,000. I was reading on line stories of parents whose children started to show signs of autism after then received their MMR shot. All of this terrifies me of vaccinations. My daughter is scheduled to get her 4 month vaccinations this week and although this will not include the MMR – I’m still worried.
Has anyone put their children on alternative schedules to receive vaccinations e.g. waited until they were older, or spaced out the vaccinations so that they did not receive them all in one day? Or any other advice on the subject?

What can I do next?

I have a 5 month old and have/had the same worries you do. I also read THE VACCINE BOOK and found it extremely helpful. Dr Sears provides you with all the info you so you can make your own decision. It is truly the best vaccine book out there! At the end he lists 2 alternative vaccine schedules, one for those who dont want any, or minimal, vaccinations, (then he recommends vaccines for only life threatening illnesses) and then his second (which I follow) recommends getting most of the shots just spaces them out and eliminates (or significantly delays) unnecessary ones. Buy the book you wont be disappointed!

Hi there, My 6 month old daughter had her appiontment last Tuesday. I had the same concerns and basically freaked myself out and started crying in the Dr's office. We are doing the alternative schedule for her shots. We are also waiting on her MMR until after age 2. When kids are 2 then you will know if there are signs of autism, so if you wait on the shot, then you will know if it is related to the MMR or not. I was also going to recommend the Dr Sears book. Our Pedi recommended it, but I haven't gotten it yet. Hope this helps. Believe me I know it is scary. You have this perfect little baby and you are scared that one day they may be different and you would feel like it was something you could have prevented. Good luck.

Hi K.,

This is a frustrating issue, because you don't know what information to believe and the government has pretty much made the vaccination decisions for you (you have to vaccinate). I would pick up "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Sears'. It gives information in an objective way "this is what we know... this is what we don't know... this is what to look out for, etc..."

Massachusetts requires that all children are up-to-date on their vaccinations prior to entering daycare or school, so we had not choice in whether or not to vaccinate our son. However, we decided to split up the vaccinations so he only got a few at a time. This meant that we had to go back to the pedi every month instead of every 2 months, but I think it was worth it to ensure that he was only being injected with the lowest possible amounts of aluminum at each appointment.

The issues about aluminum toxicity are explained in the book, but in a nutshell, aluminum in small doses is metabolized through the kidneys and expelled from the body via urine. If too much aluminum is ingested the kidneys can't process all of it and it settles elsewhere in the body, such as the brain. (this is why it has been linked with Alzheimer's) Each vaccine has a "safe" amount of aluminum, but there has been NO study to determine the effects of all the aluminum that is injected into an infant when multiple shots are given at one time. For this reason, I would spread out the vaccinations as much as possible if you can. I would also ask that the pedi use vaccination brands that have the lowest levels of aluminum and other toxins. (This is all covered in the book.)

Good luck!

Parents magazine has a good article this month on parents' concerns about immunizations. It covers the court case you mentioned and lots of other questions parents have. I would also encourage you to talk to your pediatrician.
