I am looking for help to clear up the hives I have. I let go of some recommended foods but it has not cleared up. I went to a dermatologist and she did not help me. The medical term is uticaria. Has anyone had success in clearing this up? I tend toward alternative medicine if you have a recommendation of someone near Magnolia, Ballard, Queen Anne area or downtown Seattle. Thanks

What can I do next?

Is the hives all over or just where clothing is touching the skin. If you have recently changed laundry detergents, you may having an allergic reaction. Even if you have not changed brands, companies will sometimes change the formula in a very small way, just enough to set off an allergic reaction. Or you could have developed an allergy after using the same one for years. Until you find the culprit, an antihistamine will help with the itching.

I know you lean toward alternative medicines (as I try to) but you still might want to try zyrtec. It's over the counter and works amazingly well for hives. My daughter had all over body hives so badly that we ended up at the emergency room. Zyrtec was the only thing that finally got rid of them.

Two approaches that work well for me (these deal with the symptoms only, not the underlying causes) are:

Topical homeopathic creams called Florasone and Sting Stop, both made by Boerke and Tafel.

Homeopathic pellets under the tongue. The remedy that's reliable for me, and also calms hay fever symptoms, is Histaminum Hydrochloricum, but there are several others that will work better for other people.

All of these are available over the counter at many nutrition centers, or online.

I believe that emotion can cause hives as well as food allergies. From experience, my 3 year old was getting them 3x a day and my doc. gave me an eppi pen just in case it got worse suddenly. Also, he did a IGg blood allergy test and come to find out Corn, Yogert, motzerrella cheese and anything with Nitrates in it was the cause of most of it! Secondly, the emotional part was a little harder on the little guy, but with some time and lots of calming essential oils like lavender and valor from Young Living oils we got it under control. We would go out of the situation, put on the oils and I would put them on too. I would teach him to take deep breaths and you could see it like magic exiting his body. Amazing what a mommy can do. Good luck!

When I get hives, I put some original Listerine (the orangy-brown kind) in a spray bottle and spritz my skin. It doesn't cure the hives but it soothes and cools my skin to where I'm not wanting to itch it.

My daughter suffered from this for TWO YEARS. Her uticaria started after a round of antibiotics, but we never did find for certain what caused it. I quickly became a fan of alternative medicine as well, but after TWO YEARS and FOUR different clinics, we gave in and put her on a steriod for 3 days. It completely stopped for a few weeks and we're down to one break out every couple of months. We never did find a natural solution, and you wouldn't believe what we tried. Filters on the shower heads, only purified drinking/cooking water, STRICT diet eliminating certain things for periods of time, allergy testing, detoxing... Oh, it went on and on... I feel for you as the anxiety my little girl experienced during the breakouts was just gut wrenching. I would have to hold her, all wrapped in a line dried towel, rubbing her back without scratching until the benadryl kicked in. I would try seeing an allergist. Have them do blood work, just to make sure your counts are right. Wierdly enough, whenever my daughter had bad breakouts, her counts were off. Never did figure that out either. The good news is that she's much better now... I hope you're all better soon too!!

Do you have the "skin writing" urticaria? There are so many different types it would help to have more info on it.
